If you e-file and choose direct deposit, expect your federal tax refund within 21 days of the IRS accepting your return.1Internal Revenue Service. Processing Status for Tax Forms How long it takes to get a tax refund depends on three things: how you filed, how you asked to be paid, and whether anything on your return needs a closer look. Paper returns take several weeks longer, and certain credits carry a legally required hold that pushes even early filers into late February at the earliest.
Standard Timelines by Filing Method
The 2026 filing season opened on January 26, 2026, and individual returns are due April 15, 2026.2Internal Revenue Service. When to File The 21-day clock for e-filed returns starts when the IRS accepts your return, not when your software transmits it. Acceptance usually happens within a day or two of submission, and status appears in the tracking tool about 24 hours after acceptance.3Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Refund?
Paper returns take much longer. IRS staff open, sort, and transcribe each form by hand before processing can begin. The agency does not publish a fixed window for paper returns, but they routinely run several weeks past the electronic timeline.1Internal Revenue Service. The EITC and ACTC Hold
If your return claims the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit, the IRS is prohibited by law from issuing your refund before February 15, no matter how early you filed. The rule comes from 26 U.S.C. ยง 6402(m), added by the PATH Act to give the agency time to verify income and screen for fraud.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6402 – Authority to Make Credits or Refunds The hold covers your entire refund, not just the credit portion.5Internal Revenue Service. When to Expect Your Refund if You Claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit
For 2026, the IRS expects most EITC and ACTC refunds to reach accounts or debit cards by March 2, 2026, for filers who e-filed, chose direct deposit, and have no other issues on the return. Projected deposit dates should appear in the Where’s My Refund? tool for most early EITC/ACTC filers by February 21, 2026.6Internal Revenue Service. IRS Opens 2026 Filing Season
How You Get Paid
Once the IRS approves your refund, the delivery method decides the final leg of the wait. Direct deposit is fastest. After the IRS sends the payment, it typically takes up to five days for the funds to post to your bank account.3Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Refund?
A paper check is slower. The Bureau of the Fiscal Service prints and mails the check, and delivery depends on the postal service. Plan on several extra weeks compared to direct deposit, and longer still if a check is lost or damaged and you have to request a refund trace.3Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Refund?
What Can Delay Your Refund
Certain issues pull a return out of automated processing and into a queue for review by an IRS employee. That review adds days or weeks.
Errors and Mismatches
Math errors, a mismatched Social Security number, or a discrepancy between your return and information the IRS already has (such as W-2 data) can stop a return from moving forward until a person looks at it. The IRS may need to contact you before processing continues.7Internal Revenue Service. 3.12.32 General Unpostables
Identity Verification
If the IRS sees signs of possible identity theft, it freezes processing and sends a notice, typically in the CP5071 series or Letter 5447C, asking you to verify who you are.8Internal Revenue Service. Verify Your Return Most people can complete verification online through their IRS account. Your refund stays frozen until you finish, and that step alone can add several weeks.
Amended Returns
If you filed Form 1040-X to amend a return, the standard timelines above do not apply. Amended returns generally take 8 to 12 weeks to process, and can run up to 16 weeks.9Internal Revenue Service. Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return – Frequently Asked Questions A separate tool, Where’s My Amended Return?, starts showing status about three weeks after you file.10Internal Revenue Service. When Your Refund Is Reduced by an Offset
Your refund can be processed on time and still arrive smaller than expected, or not at all, if you owe certain debts. The Treasury Offset Program, run by the Bureau of the Fiscal Service, matches taxpayers with past-due debts and diverts refund money to pay them.11Bureau of the Fiscal Service. Treasury Offset Program The common triggers are past-due child support, defaulted federal student loans,12Federal Student Aid. Federal Student Aid – Offset unemployment compensation overpayments, and delinquent state or federal tax debts.
If an offset happens, the Bureau of the Fiscal Service mails a notice showing the amount taken, the agency that claimed it, and how to reach that agency. Disputes go to the agency that submitted the debt, not to the IRS.
Interest if the IRS Is Late
The IRS has 45 days from the filing deadline (or from your filing date, if you file late) to issue a refund without owing interest. If your refund is later than that, the agency has to pay interest from the date of overpayment until the refund is issued.13Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6611 – Interest on Overpayments For the first quarter of 2026, the rate on individual overpayments is 7 percent, compounded daily.14Internal Revenue Service. Quarterly Interest Rates The interest is calculated and added automatically. You don’t have to ask for it.
Tracking Your Refund and When to Call
Two IRS tools show the same status: the Where’s My Refund? page on irs.gov and the IRS2Go mobile app.15Internal Revenue Service. IRS2GoApp Both walk your return through three stages: Return Received, Refund Approved, and Refund Sent.3Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Refund?
Wait before you call.
