Getting a tax file number in Australia takes up to 28 days from the date the Australian Taxation Office receives your completed application and verifies your identity documents.1Australian Taxation Office. Australian Residents – TFN Application There’s no fee, and most applicants receive their TFN within that window. The clock only starts once the ATO has your paperwork in hand and your ID checks out, so how you apply and whether your documents are in order both shape the real wait.
What the 28 Days Depends On
The 28-day window is the ATO’s processing time after receipt. The application method changes how quickly your paperwork gets to that point.
Applying online through Australia Post is the fastest common route. You fill in the form online, then visit a participating outlet within 30 days so staff can sight your original identity documents. You need to be at least 15 to use it.1Australian Taxation Office. Australian Residents – TFN Application2Australian Taxation Office. Apply for a TFN

What Can Slow Your Application Down
Missing or improperly certified translations are one of the more common reasons applications stall. A wrong or unreliable postal address is the other big delay. The TFN is sent only by physical mail, so an error on the form or a move during processing can mean the letter is returned undelivered. If you change address mid-process, contact the ATO before the letter goes out.
Don’t submit a second application if you’re anxious about the wait. Duplicates create extra work and tend to slow things down rather than speed them up.7Australian Taxation Office. People Living Outside Australia – TFN Application
Applying From Outside Australia
If you live overseas and need a TFN for Australian-sourced income, the online and Australia Post methods aren’t available. You complete the paper form titled “Tax file number – application or enquiry for individuals living outside Australia” and mail it with certified copies of your ID to the address printed on the form. Don’t send originals; the ATO warns they may not be returned, and certified copies of digital identity documents aren’t accepted.7Australian Taxation Office.
