How Long Does It Take to Get a Replacement Green Card?

A replacement Green Card typically arrives 6 to 12 months after U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services accepts your Form I-90, though how long it takes to get a replacement Green Card can stretch past a year when caseloads are heavy or your file needs extra review. If you’re renewing an expiring card, USCIS automatically extends your current card’s validity for 36 months from its printed expiration date, so the wait shouldn’t disrupt your ability to work or prove your status.1U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. USCIS Extends Green Card Validity Extension to 36 Months for Green Card Renewals Federal law requires permanent residents to carry valid documentation, so filing early matters.

What the Wait Actually Looks Like

The 6-to-12-month range covers several distinct stages, and knowing where you are in the sequence helps you judge whether your case is on track.

Receipt Notice

Once USCIS accepts your application and fee, it issues Form I-797C, Notice of Action. Online filers usually see the receipt in their account within days. Paper filers should expect it in the mail within a few weeks. Hold onto this notice. It confirms your case is in the system, and for renewals it carries the 36-month extension of your current card.2U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Form I-797C, Notice of Action

Biometrics Appointment

Shortly after the receipt notice, USCIS mails a separate appointment notice for biometrics: fingerprints, a photograph, and a signature captured at a local Application Support Center. These are used both for background checks and to produce your new card.3U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Preparing for Your Biometric Services Appointment Missing this appointment without rescheduling can stall or sink your application.

Adjudication and Card Production

Most of the wait sits here. USCIS reviews your application, runs background checks, and confirms eligibility. Timing depends on case volume, staffing, and whether anything in your file triggers additional review. Once approved, the card goes into production and ships by mail, usually within a few weeks of the decision.

If your card ships but never arrives, wait at least 90 days after the approval notice before submitting a non-delivery inquiry, and check the USPS tracking number on your case status page first.4U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Non-Delivery of Card

Checking the Current Estimate for Your Case

USCIS posts current processing times at egov.uscis.gov, broken down by form and service center. Select Form I-90, your filing category, and the office handling your case. You’ll see a median estimate and a longer figure covering the majority of completed cases. Those numbers update regularly, so check them again if your case starts running long.

You can track your specific application any time through Case Status Online at egov.uscis.gov using the 13-character receipt number on your I-797C: three letters followed by ten numbers. Omit any dashes, but keep other characters like asterisks if they appear on your notice.5U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Case Status Online6U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Proving Your Status While You Wait

The 36-Month Automatic Extension

For renewals of an expiring Green Card, the I-797C receipt notice automatically extends card validity for 36 months from the expiration date printed on the card. This extension took effect September 10, 2024, replacing an earlier 24-month extension. Applicants who filed before that date and had a pending case received an amended receipt notice with the longer extension before their original 24-month period ran out.1U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. USCIS Extends Green Card Validity Extension to 36 Months for Green Card Renewals

During those 36 months, you carry your expired Green Card together with the receipt notice. The combination is valid proof of permanent resident status for employment, identification, and most other purposes. For Form I-9 employment verification, the two documents together count as a valid List A document, and employers are required to accept them.7U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. USCIS Extends Validity of Expired Permanent Resident Cards from 24 Months to 36 Months for Renewals

The automatic extension applies to renewals. If your I-90 was filed to replace a lost, stolen, or damaged card rather than to renew an expiring one, the receipt notice doesn’t carry the same extension.

ADIT Stamp for Travel or Urgent Needs

If the receipt notice isn’t enough for your situation, particularly for international travel, you can request an ADIT stamp (also called an I-551 stamp) as temporary evidence of permanent resident status. The stamp is traditionally placed in your passport at a USCIS field office. USCIS has also begun mailing a Form I-94 with the ADIT stamp in cases where an in-person visit isn’t necessary.8U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. USCIS Announces Additional Mail Delivery Process for Receiving ADIT Stamp

To request one, use the online appointment tool at my.uscis.gov or call the USCIS Contact Center. An officer will verify your identity and mailing address and decide whether you need an in-person appointment or can receive the stamp by mail. You’ll need to appear in person if you have urgent travel, if USCIS doesn’t have a usable photo of you on file, or if your identity or address can’t be confirmed.9U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Schedule an Appointment USCIS appointments are free. If anyone tries to charge you for one, it’s a scam.

Asking USCIS to Move Faster

If your situation is genuinely urgent, you can ask USCIS to expedite a pending I-90. The agency reviews every expedite request case by case, generally requires supporting documentation, and the decision is entirely discretionary. Circumstances that may qualify include:

  • Severe financial loss to a company or an individual, such as a business at risk of failing or a person who has lost a job. Needing employment authorization on its own usually isn’t enough.
  • Humanitarian emergencies, including serious illness, disability, death of a close family member, or extreme conditions from a natural disaster or armed conflict.
  • A clear USCIS error that created the need for a replacement.
  • Government interest, including public safety or national security matters identified by a government entity.

USCIS also states that if you caused your own urgency by filing late or missing evidence deadlines, that undercuts the request.10U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Expedite Requests Approval is never guaranteed, but for a legitimate emergency, it’s worth asking.

What Can Make Your Wait Longer

Filing the Wrong Form as a Conditional Resident

Conditional permanent residents hold a two-year Green Card, usually from a recent marriage or an investment. They can use Form I-90 to replace a lost or damaged card, but not to renew a card that has already expired or will expire within 90 days. For that, the correct form is I-751 (marriage-based) or I-829 (investment-based) to remove the conditions on residence.11U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Instructions for Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card Filing the wrong form delays everything and risks a denial.

Moving Without Updating Your Address

If you move while your I-90 is pending, you must notify USCIS within 10 days by filing Form AR-11, Alien’s Change of Address Card, online or by mail.12U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. AR-11, Alien’s Change of Address Card Your new Green Card ships to whatever address USCIS has on file. If it’s outdated, you’ll be filing a non-delivery inquiry and waiting even longer. Updating your address through your USCIS online account changes it across your pending cases at the same time.

Paper Filing Instead of Online

Paper filings have to be physically scanned into the USCIS system before anyone reviews them, which adds lead time. Sending your application to the wrong lockbox adds more. Online filing removes both problems, gives you instant payment and electronic notifications, and lets you respond to evidence requests through your account.13U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card (Green Card)

A Denial

Denials on I-90 applications aren’t common. When they happen, the usual causes are application errors like missing signatures or an incorrect fee, a missed biometrics appointment, or issues surfaced by the background check, including certain criminal convictions or evidence that permanent resident status may have been abandoned through extended time abroad.

The denial notice explains the reason and your options. You can file Form I-290B, Notice of Appeal or Motion, within 30 calendar days of the denial date, or 33 days if the decision was mailed. USCIS may excuse a late motion to reopen if the delay was reasonable and beyond your control.14U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. I-290B, Notice of Appeal or Motion In many cases the faster route is to fix the underlying problem and refile the I-90, since an appeal adds months. That trade-off depends on the reason for the denial: a missing signature is easy to correct by refiling, while a legal determination about your status may warrant an appeal.
