How Long Does It Take to Get a Passport: Processing and Delays

How long does it take to get a passport depends on which clock you’re reading. Routine service runs four to six weeks at the passport agency and expedited runs two to three weeks, but neither number includes the mail. Once you add roughly two weeks to get your application to the agency and another two weeks for the finished passport to come back, the realistic door-to-door wait is eight to ten weeks routine and six to seven weeks expedited.¹

Processing Time Is Not the Same as Total Wait

The State Department’s posted processing times only cover the days your application sits at a passport agency or center. They don’t count the trip your envelope takes to get there, and they don’t count the trip your finished passport takes to reach you. Each of those legs runs about two weeks.¹

Realistic total timelines look like this:

Routine service: 8 to 10 weeks total (4–6 weeks processing plus roughly 4 weeks of combined mailing time)
Expedited service: 6 to 7 weeks total (2–3 weeks processing plus roughly 4 weeks of combined mailing time)
Expedited with 1–3 day return delivery: roughly 4 to 5 weeks (2–3 weeks processing, up to 2 weeks inbound mail, then 1–3 days back to you)
Urgent appointment at a passport agency: same day or next day, but only if you have international travel within 14 calendar days

Three Ways to Get It Faster

You can layer these. Expedited processing and 1–3 day return delivery work together; the urgent appointment is a separate track for people who are almost out of time.

Pay for Expedited Processing

Adding $60 to your application fee brings processing down from four to six weeks to two to three weeks. You can request expedited service whether you’re applying in person with DS-11, renewing by mail with DS-82, or using another paper renewal channel. If you’re mailing an expedited application, write “EXPEDITE” on the outside of the envelope and use the designated expedited address for your state.² Online renewal doesn’t offer an expedited option; it’s routine only.³

Pay for 1–3 Day Return Delivery

For an extra $22.05, the State Department ships your finished passport book by trackable 1–3 day delivery instead of standard mail. That removes most of the two-week return leg. The service applies only to passport books, not cards, and only the passport itself moves this way. Supporting documents like your birth certificate may still come back by first-class mail.²

Book an Urgent Travel Appointment

If you have international travel within 14 calendar days, you can try to book an in-person appointment at a regional passport agency. You’ll need proof of upcoming travel, such as a flight itinerary or ticket. These appointments are limited and fill quickly, so call or check online the moment you know you need one.¹

Life-or-Death Emergencies

A separate urgent path exists for a narrow set of family emergencies abroad. If an immediate family member outside the United States has died, is dying, or has a life-threatening illness or injury, you can schedule an urgent appointment for travel within two weeks. Immediate family here means a parent, child, spouse, sibling, or grandparent. You’ll need documentation such as a death certificate or a signed letter on hospital letterhead from a doctor explaining the situation. Traveling abroad for your own medical treatment does not qualify.⁴

What Stretches the Timeline

Two things reliably push wait times toward the long end of each range, or past it.

The first is peak season. Application volume climbs from roughly late winter through summer, and higher volume can drag processing times beyond the posted windows.¹

The second is any request for additional information. If the State Department sends you a letter or email asking for something missing or unclear, your processing clock resets from the date you respond. A single follow-up can add weeks.¹

A few smaller things worth knowing before they cost you time. Federal law requires your Social Security Number on the application; leaving it off delays and can deny the application, and the IRS can impose a $500 penalty. If you or your child has never been issued one, include a signed and dated statement saying so.⁵ If you’re mailing a renewal, use a trackable USPS method — not FedEx, UPS, or DHL, because the addresses are PO boxes that private carriers can’t deliver to.⁶ And if you’re renewing online, the State Department cancels your old passport as soon as you submit, so don’t plan any international travel while it’s processing.³

Tracking Where You Are in the Clock

You can check progress through the State Department’s Online Passport Status System using your last name, date of birth, and the last four digits of your Social Security Number. If you provided an email address on your application, you’ll also get automatic updates.⁷

Expect a lag. It can take up to two weeks from the day you apply before your status shows as “In Process,” and that gap is normal transit time to the agency, not a sign anything went wrong. Once the status reads “Mailed,” allow another two weeks for delivery. If you haven’t received the passport two weeks after that “Mailed” date, call the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778.⁷

Your passport and any supporting documents you submitted often arrive in separate mailings. You might get the passport first and wait up to four weeks for your birth certificate, previous passport, or name change document. If you applied for both a book and a card, those can come separately too.⁶

The Six-Month Rule Changes What “On Time” Means

Getting the passport in hand before your flight isn’t always enough. Many countries won’t admit you unless your passport remains valid for at least six months beyond your date of entry. This six-month rule applies in destinations including China, Thailand, India, Russia, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, and much of Southeast Asia. A passport that expires seven months from now can still get you denied boarding or turned away at immigration if your trip is six months out.⁸

Check your destination’s entry rules before booking, and if you’re anywhere close to that six-month window, treat the renewal as urgent and build the full door-to-door timeline into your plans. Adult passports are valid for 10 years from the date of issue; children’s passports are valid for 5.⁵
