How Long Does It Take to Get a Passport After an Oath Ceremony?

Getting a U.S. passport after your naturalization oath ceremony usually takes about six to nine weeks with routine processing, or three to five weeks if you pay for expedited service. Both clocks start when your application reaches a passport agency, not on the day you take the oath, so the sooner you apply the sooner you have the passport in hand. You can apply the same day as your ceremony.

The Realistic Timeline From Application to Delivery

The State Department publishes two processing speeds: routine at four to six weeks and expedited at two to three weeks for an extra $60.1U.S. Department of State. They do not include mail transit in either direction, which typically adds a week or two on each end.

Combined with mail time, here is what to expect from the day you leave the acceptance facility:

  • Routine processing: 6 to 9 weeks.
  • Routine with paid 1-to-3-day return delivery: 5 to 8 weeks.
  • Expedited processing: 3 to 5 weeks.
  • Expedited with paid return delivery: 3 to 4 weeks.
  • Regional passport agency for urgent travel: same day to a few days, by appointment only.

Peak travel season, high application volumes, and incomplete forms can all push these timelines longer.2U.S. Department of State. How to Get my U.S. Passport Fast Check the State Department’s processing times page before you apply so you’re working with current numbers.
