How Long Does It Take to Get a Disability Check?

Most people approved for Social Security disability receive their first payment within 30 to 90 days of the approval notice, but how long it takes to get a disability check depends on which program approved you. SSDI carries a mandatory five-month waiting period counted from the date your disability began, so the first payment often arrives many months after onset even when approval itself was quick. SSI has no waiting period and can start paying the month after you applied. On top of those rules, the SSA still needs time after approval to calculate your benefit, figure any back pay, and set up your deposit.

The Five-Month SSDI Waiting Period

If you were approved for Social Security Disability Insurance, benefits cannot begin until you have been disabled for five full calendar months. Payments start in the sixth full month after the established onset date, which is the date the SSA determines your condition actually became disabling.1Social Security Administration. Disability Benefits | You’re Approved That date is not necessarily when you applied or when you were approved.

The math is straightforward. If the SSA sets your onset date at March 15, 2026, the five-month waiting period runs April through August. Your first entitled month is September 2026, and because SSDI pays the month after entitlement, that September payment arrives in October 2026.1Social Security Administration. The waiting period is set in federal law and cannot be shortened in most cases.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 42 US Code 423 – Disability Insurance Benefit Payments Two exceptions exist. The waiting period does not apply if you have been diagnosed with ALS and your approval date is on or after July 23, 2020. It also does not apply if you had a previous period of disability that ended within the last 60 months.3Social Security Administration. SSI Pays Sooner

Supplemental Security Income has no five-month waiting period.4Social Security Administration. How Long to Get a Disability Check After Approval Once approved, SSI can begin as early as the month after your application date. The federal SSI rate for 2026 is $994 per month for an individual and $1,491 for a couple, with some states adding a supplement.5Social Security Administration. 2026 Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) Fact Sheet Your actual payment can be reduced based on other income or your living arrangements.

Some people qualify for both programs at once, called concurrent benefits. This typically happens when the SSDI amount is low enough that SSI can fill the gap up to the SSI payment level.6Social Security Administration. Example of Concurrent Benefits With Work Incentives | The Red Book

What Happens Between Approval and the First Deposit

An approval notice does not mean money is on the way that week. After a favorable decision, the SSA still has to calculate your exact benefit amount, work out any back pay owed, and set up your payment schedule. This administrative step generally takes 30 to 90 days, though complex cases run longer.

Several things can slow it down:

  • Cases approved by an Administrative Law Judge after a hearing go through additional processing before the payment center can act. That can add one to three months.
  • Multiple periods of disability, gaps in your work record, or overlapping benefit claims require more calculation time.
  • If the SSA does not have bank details for direct deposit, the payment cannot go out electronically. Setting up or changing direct deposit can take 30 to 60 days on its own.7Social Security Administration. What You Need to Know When You Get Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

The fastest way to get paid is to have direct deposit information on file before the decision comes through. You can add or update bank details in a my Social Security account.

If your case was fast-tracked under the Compassionate Allowances program, which covers severe conditions such as certain cancers, early-onset Alzheimer’s, and ALS, the approval itself came faster.8Social Security Administration. Compassionate Allowances The quicker approval does not remove the five-month SSDI waiting period, but it shortens the total time from application to first check.

Payment Schedules Once You’re in the System

The SSA pays through direct deposit or a Direct Express prepaid debit card. Direct deposit is faster: funds are available at the start of the banking day on your scheduled date. The Direct Express card works similarly but has to be ordered first, which adds time before the initial payment.

After that, payments follow a set monthly schedule:

If you receive both benefits concurrently, the SSDI payment follows the Wednesday schedule and the SSI payment arrives on the first.10Social Security Administration. Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments 2026-2027

When Back Pay Arrives

Most approved applicants are owed money for the stretch between when benefits should have started and when approval came through. The SSA calls this past-due benefits. How far back it reaches, and how it is paid out, depends on the program.

SSDI Back Pay

SSDI back pay covers every month you were entitled but not yet approved. The count starts at the sixth full month after your established onset date and runs through the month before your regular payments begin. If your disability began well before you filed, the SSA can also pay retroactive benefits for up to 12 months before the application date, provided evidence supports disability during that period.11Social Security Administration. SSA Handbook 1513 – Retroactive Effect of Application SSDI back pay is typically paid as a single lump sum, which can be substantial if the case took a year or more to resolve.

SSI Back Pay

SSI back pay only reaches back to the application date. There are no retroactive payments for months before you applied.11Social Security Administration. SSA Handbook 1513 – Retroactive Effect of Application

SSI back pay is not always paid in one lump sum. When the amount owed equals or exceeds three times the federal benefit rate ($2,982 in 2026), the SSA must pay it in installments: up to three payments spaced six months apart. Each of the first two installments cannot exceed three times the federal benefit rate, and any remaining balance goes in the third installment.12Social Security Administration. SI 02101.020 – Large Past-Due Supplemental Security Income Someone owed $15,000 in SSI back pay would receive roughly $2,982 in the first payment, the same amount six months later, and the remainder six months after that.

Attorney Fees Come Out First

If you used an attorney or representative, their fee usually comes out of your back pay before it reaches you. Under the standard SSA fee agreement, the attorney can collect 25 percent of your past-due benefits or $9,200, whichever is lower.13Social Security Administration. GN 03920.006 – Increases to Fee Cap Limits for Fee Agreements The SSA withholds that amount and pays the attorney directly, so you get the remainder.

The effect on what actually lands in your account is real. On $20,000 of back pay, the attorney’s share is $5,000 (25 percent) and you receive $15,000. On $50,000, the fee is capped at $9,200 rather than the $12,500 that 25 percent would produce, because the dollar cap is lower.

If the Payment Does Not Arrive

If your scheduled date passes with no deposit, check with your bank first, since posting delays sometimes explain the gap. If the payment still has not shown up, contact the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) or visit your local Social Security office.14Social Security Administration.
