There is no way to know in advance which ones will, so the safe move is to apply when you book your trip, and no later than 72 hours before your flight.
What Can Push Your Application Toward the Full 72 Hours
Most applications clear well inside the window. A few things reliably slow things down. Incomplete or inaccurate answers are the most common cause of delay. A name that closely matches someone on a watchlist can route your application to manual review, as can a travel history that triggers additional screening. High application volume during peak travel seasons adds time on top of all of that.
Accuracy at submission is the single biggest thing under your control. Double-check your passport number, name spelling, and date of birth against the passport itself before you pay.
Checking Your Status

- Authorization Approved. You’re cleared to travel under the Visa Waiver Program.
- Authorization Pending. Your application is still under review. This is not a negative finding, and a decision is usually available within 72 hours.
- Travel Not Authorized. You are not eligible to travel under the Visa Waiver Program.
If your status shows Pending, wait out the full 72 hours before doing anything else. If Your Application Is Still Pending After 72 Hours
A small number of applications sit longer than the standard window. If yours is one of them, keep checking status rather than filing again. There is no way to escalate a pending review, and reapplying only complicates the record CBP is already looking at.
If the trip is close and you cannot afford to wait, your fallback is a nonimmigrant visa (usually a B-1 for business or B-2 for tourism) at a U.S. embassy or consulate. That route takes considerably longer than ESTA, and interview wait times vary widely by post, from under two weeks at some embassies to over a year at others.5Travel.State.Gov. If the Result Is Travel Not Authorized
There is no formal appeal for an ESTA denial. CBP will not disclose the reason, and U.S. embassies and consulates cannot access that information either.6U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The realistic next step is a B-1 or B-2 visa application. If you believe the denial reflects an error, such as a name that keeps getting confused with someone on a watchlist, you can file an inquiry through the DHS Traveler Redress Inquiry Program (DHS TRIP). It handles cases where travelers have been wrongly denied boarding, delayed at borders, or repeatedly pulled into secondary screening.7Homeland Security. What Approval Does and Does Not Get You
An approved ESTA lets you board a plane or vessel to the United States. It does not guarantee entry.
