Most direct deposits take one to three business days to post, and a routine payroll deposit usually lands in your account by the morning of your scheduled payday. How long a direct deposit takes depends on when the sender submits the payment file, which ACH settlement window it hits, whether your bank offers early access, and whether a weekend or federal holiday sits between submission and settlement. Government benefits and IRS refunds run on their own calendars.
The Standard Payroll Timeline
For a typical paycheck, your employer submits the payment file one or two business days before payday. Standard ACH transactions settle at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time on the designated settlement date.1Federal Reserve Financial Services. FedACH Processing Schedule Once settlement happens, your bank credits the deposit as of the day it receives the funds.2eCFR. 12 CFR Part 1005 – Electronic Fund Transfers Regulation E
Many banks already post deposits by the morning of settlement day, but exactly when varies. A Nacha rule taking effect on September 18, 2026, will require receiving banks to make deposited amounts available for withdrawal no later than 9:00 a.m. local time on the settlement date.3Nacha. Funds Availability Requirements for Non-Same Day Credit Entries Until then, some banks post later in the day.
If you see a “pending” status in your online banking, your bank has been notified that money is on the way but settlement hasn’t finalized. Pending credits usually turn into available funds the next business morning.
Why Some Banks Pay You Early
Many banks and credit unions advertise paychecks up to two business days early. This isn’t faster ACH processing. When your employer submits a payroll file ahead of payday, the receiving bank gets advance notice of the incoming deposit. Some banks choose to release the money right away based on that notification, trusting that settlement will complete as expected the next morning.
Not every deposit qualifies. Banks typically limit early access to recurring payroll or government benefit deposits with a predictable pattern. One-time transfers, tax refunds, and deposits from unfamiliar sources often don’t trigger the early release. How many days early you actually get your money depends on when your employer submits the file and your bank’s own policy.
Same-Day ACH
Same-Day ACH lets payments process and settle on the same business day they’re submitted. The network offers three daily submission windows, with deadlines at 10:30 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 2:45 p.m. Eastern Time, and funds settle at 1:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m., and 6:00 p.m. ET on the current business day.4Nacha. Same Day ACH Moving Payments Faster Phase 1 Because of those added costs, most employers still use standard next-day settlement for payroll. Same-Day ACH tends to show up for off-cycle paychecks, bonuses, or urgent corrections rather than regular paydays.
FedNow and Real-Time Payments
The FedNow Service, operated by the Federal Reserve, settles payments individually in real time instead of in batches.7FedNow Service. FedNow Instant Payments at a Glance It runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including weekends and federal holidays, and a payment can reach the recipient’s account in seconds.8Federal Reserve Bank Services. FedNow Service Operating Hours
Adoption is still early. Most employers don’t yet use FedNow for payroll, and the service is more common for person-to-person transfers and time-sensitive business payments. If a FedNow deposit is what you’re expecting, it should post almost immediately regardless of the day or hour.
Weekends and Federal Holidays
The ACH network settles only on business days. Saturdays, Sundays, and federal holidays are excluded because the Federal Reserve’s settlement service is closed.9Nacha. The ABCs of ACH A payroll file submitted Friday evening won’t settle until the following Monday at the earliest, or Tuesday if Monday is a holiday.
When a federal holiday falls on a Saturday, Federal Reserve banks observe it on the preceding Friday. When it falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is treated as the holiday.10Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. Federal Reserve Bank Holiday Schedule 2026 Most employers plan around closures by submitting payroll files early so deposits arrive on the last business day before the holiday rather than the first business day after. FedNow is the one exception; it keeps running on weekends and holidays.
Your First Direct Deposit May Take Longer
When you set up direct deposit with a new employer or switch bank accounts, you give the payroll department your bank’s routing number and account number. Many employers and banks then send a prenote: a zero-dollar test transaction that confirms the numbers are valid. The prenote can take up to three business days to clear, which is why your first paycheck after enrolling often arrives as a paper check instead of a deposit. Some employers skip the prenote and send a small test deposit of a few cents that you confirm receiving. Once your account is verified, future deposits run on the standard timeline.
Getting the numbers right matters. A transposed digit can send your pay to the wrong account or bounce the transfer back. A common mistake is handing over a wire transfer routing number instead of the ACH routing number, which are different at some banks.
Government Benefits Run on Fixed Calendars
Federal benefit payments don’t follow the employer-driven ACH timing above. They go out on set monthly dates.
Social Security and SSI
Social Security retirement and disability payments are deposited on a specific Wednesday each month based on your date of birth:11Social Security Administration. Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments 2026-2027
- Born 1st–10th: second Wednesday of the month
- Born 11th–20th: third Wednesday of the month
- Born 21st–31st: fourth Wednesday of the month
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is deposited on the 1st of each month. If the 1st falls on a weekend or holiday, the deposit arrives on the last business day before it. If you receive both Social Security and SSI, your Social Security payment is deposited on the 3rd of the month instead of following the Wednesday schedule.11Social Security Administration. Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments 2026-2027
VA Benefits
VA disability and pension payments are generally deposited on the first business day of each month. When the 1st falls on a weekend or holiday, the deposit typically arrives on the last business day of the previous month.
IRS Tax Refunds Take Longer
The IRS estimates that an electronically filed return with direct deposit selected will produce a refund within about 21 days of filing.12Internal Revenue Service. Refunds That window is much longer than payroll because the IRS has to process and verify your return before initiating payment. You can check refund status 24 hours after e-filing a current-year return.
One limit catches people off guard. The IRS allows no more than three electronic refund deposits into a single bank account per year. A fourth or later refund directed to the same account is automatically converted to a paper check mailed to the taxpayer’s address, and the account must be in the taxpayer’s own name.13Internal Revenue Service. Direct Deposit Limits The limit covers prepaid debit cards too.
When a Deposit Is Late
If your deposit doesn’t arrive when you expected it, work through the likely causes before assuming the worst.
- Confirm the routing and account numbers you gave your employer, and make sure you used the ACH routing number rather than a wire transfer number.
- Check with your payroll department. The file may have been submitted late or hit a processing error. If the employer sent funds to the wrong account because of their mistake, they still owe you the pay and must reissue it.
- Call your bank. The bank can tell you whether an incoming ACH credit is pending, has been rejected, or hasn’t arrived. If a deposit was returned, your bank can share the return reason code.
For Social Security and other federal benefits, the Social Security Administration recommends waiting three additional business days past the expected date before reaching out. For payroll, contacting your employer on the first business day after the missed date is reasonable. Weekends, holidays, and the first deposit after a bank change account for most delays that resolve themselves within a day or two.
