An amended federal tax return generally takes the IRS 8 to 12 weeks to process, and some returns take up to 16 weeks. Paper filings are currently running slower than that: as of early 2026 the IRS reports it is working on paper Forms 1040-X received in November 2025, a real-world lag closer to three or four months.1Internal Revenue Service. Processing Status for Tax Forms Electronic amendments move faster because they skip the physical intake queue.
The Standard Processing Window
The IRS asks filers to allow 8 to 12 weeks for a Form 1040-X, with up to 16 weeks in some cases.2Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Amended Return? Two details about that window matter.
First, the clock starts when the IRS receives and logs the return into its system, not when you drop it in the mail. For paper returns, intake alone can add days or weeks depending on seasonal volume. Second, the published window assumes a clean return. Anything that requires manual handling — an unsigned form, a missing schedule, an identity flag — stops the clock and puts the return in a separate review lane.
What Makes an Amended Return Take Longer
The IRS flags returns that contain errors, are incomplete, are unsigned, or need additional information from the filer before processing can continue.3Internal Revenue Service. Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return: Frequently Asked Questions Each of these triggers a hold, and resolving the hold usually requires correspondence by mail, which adds weeks or months.
Other common causes of delay:
- Identity theft or fraud flags, which route the return through a separate security review outside the normal queue.
- Injured spouse claims filed with Form 8379, which require additional review steps.
- Paper amendments with multiple revised schedules, which take longer for IRS staff to transcribe and verify by hand.
- Filing during peak season (February through April), when amendments compete with millions of original returns for processing capacity.
If your original return for the year in question was filed on paper, your amendment must also be filed on paper, regardless of software capability.4Internal Revenue Service. Amended Returns That single fact often decides whether a taxpayer sees 8 weeks or 16.
How to Keep Your Return From Stalling
Most delays come from problems that could have been caught before the envelope was sealed. A Form 1040-X uses three columns: original figures, the change, and the corrected values. You have to identify the tax year and give a written explanation for each adjustment.5Internal Revenue Service. File an Amended Return
Attach every new or changed form and schedule that supports the adjustment — a revised Schedule A if you are changing itemized deductions, for instance. A return missing those attachments is treated as incomplete and stalls at intake before the processing clock starts. Before filing, confirm that:
- The return is signed.
- All Social Security numbers are correct.
- Every affected schedule is attached.
- Your current mailing address and taxpayer identification numbers are accurate, so the IRS can reach you without another round of mail.
For paper filers, the correct mailing address depends on your state and whether you are enclosing a payment; the IRS publishes a state-by-state lookup.6Internal Revenue Service. Where to File Paper Tax Returns With or Without a Payment Sending the return to the wrong processing center routes it into the wrong queue and adds delay you cannot easily recover.
Electronic filing is available for Form 1040-X to amend a Form 1040, 1040-SR, or 1040-NR for the current tax year or the two prior tax years, subject to the paper-original rule above. E-filing generally moves faster because it avoids physical intake and cuts down on transcription errors.
Tracking Your Amended Return
About three weeks after you submit the return, you can check its status through the IRS “Where’s My Amended Return?” online tool or by calling 866-464-2050.3Internal Revenue Service. Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return: Frequently Asked Questions The tool reports one of three states: received, adjusted, or completed. Checking it every week or two is worthwhile because it can surface an IRS request for additional information before that request causes further delay.
When the review is finished, the IRS mails a notice explaining any changes made to your tax account. That notice is your confirmation that processing is complete and the case is closed in the IRS system.
Requesting Faster Processing for Financial Hardship
If you are in a financial emergency while your amendment sits in the queue, the Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) may be able to expedite the refund. Qualifying hardships include being unable to afford medicine, facing eviction or foreclosure, or having received a utility shutoff notice.7Taxpayer Advocate Service. Expediting a Refund TAS may ask for supporting documentation such as the shutoff or eviction notice itself.
There is a hard limit on this route. If the Bureau of the Fiscal Service is offsetting your refund for a debt like past-due student loans, child support, or a state unemployment overpayment, the IRS cannot release the refund even if you show hardship. TAS can be reached at 877-777-4778 or through a local Taxpayer Advocate office.
Filing Deadline to Keep in Mind
Processing time is one clock; the deadline to file the amendment in the first place is another. To claim a refund, you generally have three years from the date you filed the original return or two years from the date you paid the tax, whichever is later.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 6511 – Limitations on Credit or Refund Miss both, and any refund is forfeited even if the IRS owes you the money. If you owe additional tax rather than claiming a refund, there is no filing deadline, but interest and penalties keep accruing until you pay.
The short version: plan around 8 to 12 weeks if everything is clean, up to 16 weeks if the return is complex, and roughly three to four months for paper filings under current IRS workload. File electronically when you are eligible, attach everything the change touches, and start checking status at the three-week mark.
