A TSP loan is generally disbursed within three business days after the Thrift Savings Plan finishes processing your request, so the honest answer to how long a TSP loan takes to get approved is usually about a week from submission to money in your bank account with direct deposit.1Thrift Savings Plan. TSP Loan Program Booklet A clean general purpose request with no complications moves fastest. A residential loan requiring uploaded documentation, or any request that triggers spousal consent or a manual review, takes longer.
The Standard Timeline After You Submit
Most requests are processed automatically. Once you confirm the loan on the summary screen, the system checks your account balance, your employment status, and whether you have any outstanding loan issues. If everything lines up and no spousal consent or residential documentation is required, the file moves straight to disbursement. The TSP generally disburses funds within three business days of that point.1Thrift Savings Plan. TSP Loan Program Booklet
That three-day window is processing time, not arrival time. Your bank will still need its own day or two to post the deposit, which is why the practical timeline for a straightforward direct-deposit request lands closer to a week.
Direct Deposit vs. Paper Check
How you receive the money is the single biggest variable you control.
With direct deposit, funds are sent electronically to the bank account on file after the three-business-day processing window closes. Add the bank’s own posting time, and the money is typically available within a few business days of that.
If your direct deposit information is missing or invalid, the TSP mails a paper check to the address on your account. Mail delivery adds several days on top of processing, and if the check is lost, stolen, or misdirected, replacing it can take six weeks or longer.1Thrift Savings Plan. TSP Loan Program Booklet
What Slows the Process Down
Several common issues push the timeline past a week.
Spousal consent. If you are married and covered by FERS or the uniformed services, your spouse must sign the loan agreement before the loan can be disbursed. For CSRS participants, the TSP notifies the spouse but no signature is required.2eCFR. 5 CFR 1655.18 Spousal Rights Coordinating that signature is often where FERS applicants lose the most days. Exceptions exist when a spouse’s whereabouts are unknown or exceptional circumstances prevent obtaining consent.
Residential loan documentation. A residential loan requires a signed purchase contract or settlement agreement, or a signed builder’s contract if you are constructing. If closing costs are included in the loan amount, you also need a loan estimate or closing disclosure from the mortgage company.3eCFR. 5 CFR Part 1655 Loan Program General purpose loans require no supporting paperwork, which is why they clear faster.
The seven-day security hold on new banking or address information. Any newly added direct deposit account or mailing address must sit on file for at least seven days before the TSP will send money to it.1Thrift Savings Plan. TSP Loan Program Booklet Applying right after a bank change guarantees a built-in wait.
Payroll data that has not reached the TSP yet. If your agency’s most recent payroll submission has not posted, or your personnel records show inconsistencies, the system may flag the application for manual review. Manual review adds time no matter what type of loan you are taking.
High-volume periods and system maintenance. These can add a day or two even to an otherwise clean file.
Steps to Take Before Applying
The fastest path is the automated one, and you can improve your odds of staying on it.
- Update your bank account and mailing address in My Account at least seven days before you plan to apply, so the security hold is already satisfied.
- Confirm your agency has submitted its most recent payroll data.
- If you are married and covered by FERS or the uniformed services, tell your spouse the loan is coming and make sure the contact information the TSP has for them is current. You certify under penalty of perjury that your marital status and spouse’s contact details are accurate.2eCFR. 5 CFR 1655.18 Spousal Rights
- For a residential loan, have your signed purchase contract, builder’s contract, or closing disclosure saved and ready to upload before you start.
- Choose direct deposit rather than a paper check.
You can apply by logging in to My Account at tsp.gov or by calling the ThriftLine at 1-877-968-3778.4The Thrift Savings Plan (TSP). TSP Loans The online portal lets you model different loan amounts and repayment schedules before you commit.
Eligibility Conditions That Can Stop You Before You Start
Timeline questions are moot if your account isn’t eligible in the first place. Four conditions must be met before the TSP will let you begin a loan request. You need at least $1,000 in employee contributions and the earnings on those contributions. You must be in active pay status and eligible to contribute. And if you paid off a previous TSP loan, at least 30 business days must have passed since that payoff.5eCFR. 5 CFR 1655.2 Eligibility for Loans Furloughed participants during a government shutdown can still apply even though they are technically not in pay status.
You can have up to two loans outstanding at once, but only one of them can be a residential loan. A taxed loan from a previous delinquency still counts against that two-loan cap.1Thrift Savings Plan. TSP Loan Program Booklet If you have both a civilian and a uniformed services account, the two-loan limit applies separately to each.
The 30-business-day post-payoff wait is worth flagging on its own. It runs to roughly six calendar weeks and applies no matter which loan type you paid off or which type you want to take next.5eCFR. 5 CFR 1655.2 Eligibility for Loans If you just closed out one loan, the earliest you can start a new one is well over a month away.
Tracking Your Loan Status
Once you have submitted the request, you can check where it stands by logging in to My Account. The status will show whether the loan is still processing, waiting on spousal consent or documentation, or has been sent for disbursement. If your file has been flagged for manual review, that is usually where you will first see it.
Put together, the picture is straightforward. If you are unmarried or CSRS, taking a general purpose loan, keeping your existing bank details, and choosing direct deposit, expect to see the money within about a week. Add a few days for spousal signature on a FERS request, longer for a residential loan whose documents need review, and considerably longer if the request drops into manual review or a paper check has to travel by mail.
