If you e-filed and chose direct deposit, the IRS issues most federal tax refunds within 21 calendar days of accepting your return, and your bank may take up to another five days to post the deposit.1Internal Revenue Service. Refunds2Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Refund? Paper filers wait six weeks or longer, and certain credits, review flags, or debts you owe can push any refund well past those windows. How long a tax refund takes to hit your bank depends less on the calendar than on how you filed and what is on the return.
The Standard Timeline by How You Filed
The 21-day clock starts when the IRS acknowledges your e-filed return, not when your tax software says “submitted.” Once the IRS approves the refund, the money moves through the Automated Clearing House network to your bank.3Bureau of the Fiscal Service. Tax Refund Frequently Asked Questions After the IRS marks the refund as sent, allow up to five more days for it to show up in your account.2Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Refund?
Mail a paper return and the wait stretches to at least six weeks from the day the IRS receives it, because paper returns are keyed in by hand.5Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Refund?
Why EITC and ACTC Filers Wait Until Late February
If your return claims the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit, federal law blocks the IRS from releasing any part of your refund before February 15, no matter how early you filed. Under 26 U.S.C. § 6402(m), the entire refund is held, not just the credit portion.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6402 – Authority to Make Credits or Refunds Even the Taxpayer Advocate Service cannot release funds early for hardship.6Taxpayer Advocate Service. Held or Stopped Refunds
For the 2026 filing season covering tax year 2025, the IRS began accepting returns on January 26, 2026, and expects most EITC and ACTC refunds to reach direct-deposit accounts and debit cards by March 2, 2026, assuming no other issues with the return.7Internal Revenue Service. What Can Push Your Refund Past 21 Days
Several issues can stall a refund even when you did everything else right.
Income Mismatches
When the wages or 1099 income on your return does not match what employers and payers reported to the IRS, the return gets flagged for manual review. Missing schedules or incomplete documentation can do the same. The IRS may just need time to reconcile the numbers before releasing the money.
Identity Verification (Letter 5071C)
If the IRS suspects identity theft or cannot confirm you filed the return, it sends Letter 5071C asking you to verify. You have 30 days to respond, and you can do it online through the IRS Identity and Tax Return Verification Service, by phone, or in person. After you verify, allow up to nine weeks for the refund.8Taxpayer Advocate Service. Letter 5071C – Return Processing Stopped, Notice Issued
CP05 Review Notices
A CP05 notice means the IRS is taking a closer look at income, withholding, credits, or expenses. The initial review runs up to 60 days, and the IRS asks that you not call before that window closes. If the IRS then requests documents, add up to 16 more weeks after you send them.9Taxpayer Advocate Service. Notice CP05 A full CP05 review can hold a refund for several months.
When Your Refund Gets Taken Before It Arrives
Your refund can be reduced or wiped out to cover certain debts before it ever hits your account. The Treasury Offset Program, run by the Bureau of the Fiscal Service, intercepts federal tax refunds to collect past-due federal tax, child and spousal support, defaulted federal student loans, state income tax debts, and state unemployment overpayments.10Bureau of the Fiscal Service. TOP Program Rules and Requirements Fact Sheet Up to 100% of a federal refund can be taken. You get a written notice after the offset showing how much was taken and which agency received it.11eCFR. 31 CFR 285.3 – Offset of Tax Refund Payments to Collect Past-Due Support
If you filed jointly and only your spouse owes the debt, you can recover your share by filing Form 8379, Injured Spouse Allocation. Processing takes about 11 weeks when filed with an e-filed joint return, 14 weeks with a paper joint return, and 8 weeks when filed separately after the return has already processed.12Internal Revenue Service. Injured Spouse Those weeks come on top of normal return processing time.
Amended Returns Take Much Longer
Refunds tied to an amended return on Form 1040-X generally take 8 to 12 weeks, and sometimes up to 16 weeks. You can start checking status about three weeks after submitting through the “Where’s My Amended Return?” tool on IRS.gov.13Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Amended Return
Tracking Your Refund and Chasing a Missing One
The “Where’s My Refund?” tool on IRS.gov and the IRS2Go app both show the same three stages: Return Received, Refund Approved, and Refund Sent.14Internal Revenue Service. Check the Status of a Refund in Just a Few Clicks Using the Where’s My Refund Tool You will need your Social Security number or ITIN, filing status, and the exact whole-dollar refund amount.1Internal Revenue Service. Refunds Status appears 24 hours after the IRS accepts an e-filed return, or about four weeks after a paper return is mailed. The tracker refreshes once a day, overnight, so checking repeatedly will not surface new information.
If you fat-fingered the routing or account number, one of two things happens. The IRS validation check may catch the bad number and a paper check goes out automatically. If the numbers pass validation but your bank rejects the deposit, the bank returns the money to the IRS, which then mails a check to your last known address.15Internal Revenue Service. Refund Inquiries 18 Either path adds significant delay.
When “Where’s My Refund?” says the money was sent but nothing shows up, you can request a refund trace. Wait at least five days past the expected deposit date for a direct deposit, or six weeks after a paper check was mailed.16Taxpayer Advocate Service. Lost or Stolen Refund File Form 3911, Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund, to start the trace. Banks have up to 90 days to respond, and full resolution can take up to 120 days.15Internal Revenue Service. Refund Inquiries 18
Interest the IRS Owes If Your Refund Is Late
Federal law gives the IRS a 45-day grace period from the filing deadline or the date you filed, whichever is later, to send your refund without owing you interest. If the refund takes longer, interest accrues from the original due date of the return until the IRS pays.17Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6611 – Interest on Overpayments For the first quarter of 2026, the overpayment rate for individuals is 7% per year, compounded daily.18Internal Revenue Service. Interest Rates Remain the Same for the First Quarter of 2026 The rate adjusts quarterly, and the IRS adds any interest owed automatically. That interest is taxable income you will report the following year.
