How Long Does a Passport Request Take After Biometrics?

Most applicants who submit a straightforward temporary residence application receive a Passport Request (PPR) from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada within two to four weeks after giving biometrics, but how long a passport request takes after biometrics depends heavily on the visa type, the visa office handling your file, and whether your application is pulled for extra background screening. IRCC does not publish a specific biometrics-to-PPR benchmark; instead, biometrics time is folded into the overall processing estimate for each visa category.1Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. What a Passport Request Is

A PPR is an official letter or email from IRCC asking you to send in your physical passport so the visa office can place the visa counterfoil (the sticker) inside it. Do not send your passport to a Visa Application Centre before you get this letter.2VFS Global. Passport Submission – VFS Canada A PPR means your application has cleared initial review and, in most cases, background checks. It is not a final approval — IRCC can still refuse at the issuance stage — but refusals after a PPR are uncommon.

Typical Timelines

IRCC’s published processing times run from the day it receives a complete application through the day a decision is made, and biometrics time sits inside that window.1Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Check Current IRCC Processing Times For visitor visas, study permits, and work permits, historical benchmarks generally fall between 8 and 16 weeks for 80% of applications. Visitor visas processed outside Canada tend to sit at the shorter end, with IRCC describing most as taking “a few weeks or less.”3Government of Canada. Visitor Visa – After You Apply

If you gave biometrics soon after applying, most of what happens after that appointment is document review and background checks. A clean visitor visa file often produces a PPR within two to four weeks of biometrics. Study permits and work permits usually take longer because IRCC has more to verify — letters of acceptance, financial support, labour market impact assessments, and the like.

Published estimates are not a ceiling. IRCC states plainly that your file may take longer than the times shown and that those figures are “not a maximum or a guarantee.”1Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Check Current IRCC Processing Times

What Slows a PPR Down

The visa office assigned to your application matters more than any other factor. IRCC offices around the world carry different workloads, and one dealing with a regional surge will move slower than one running light. You can pull office-specific processing times using the IRCC processing time tool.

Incomplete files come next. Missing documents, thin financial evidence, or unsigned forms trigger a request for additional information, and the clock pauses until you respond. Submitting a clean application is the biggest lever you actually control.

Security and background screening can add real time. Standard checks usually resolve in one to three months. Applicants pulled for a comprehensive security review have reported waits stretching from six months to over a year.

Finding Out If You Are Under Extended Screening

You can order your Global Case Management System (GCMS) notes to see how your file is being handled. If the security section reads “comprehensive,” you are in the longer queue and should adjust your expectations accordingly.

When the PPR Arrives

Your PPR letter carries a deadline, typically 30 days, to get your passport in. Take it seriously. If you cannot meet it, contact IRCC through the online webform before the deadline to explain and ask for an extension. Extensions are sometimes granted; ignoring the deadline can get your application closed or refused.

When you submit your passport to a VAC, bring:

  • Your PPR letter or a printout of the email.
  • A VAC consent form, one per applicant.
  • Two passport-sized photos (3.5 cm × 4.5 cm) if you are a permanent resident applicant.
  • Anything else specifically listed in your PPR letter.

For family applications, each person needs their own PPR before their passport can go in. Sending a passport for someone who has not yet received a PPR causes processing problems.2VFS Global. Passport Submission – VFS Canada An authorized representative can submit on your behalf with your original passport, two copies of the bio page, and a consent form completed with the representative sections filled in.

Passport Condition

Your passport must have at least one blank page for the visa sticker, and IRCC will not issue a work permit, study permit, or visitor record valid past your passport’s expiry date.4Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Valid Passports and Other Travel Documents Needed to Come to Canada Renew a passport near expiry before submitting it, or you may end up with a visa covering only a fraction of the stay you planned.

Checking Status While You Wait

How you check depends on the application type. Express Entry, study permits, and spousal sponsorship use the Application Status Tracker. Visitor visas submitted through an IRCC secure account are tracked by signing back into that account. Paper applications can be linked to a secure account afterward.5Canada.ca. How to Check the Status of Your IRCC Application

Check periodically. Calling or emailing IRCC repeatedly will not move your file. The tracker updates daily. If you are well past the published processing time for your category, that is the point at which contacting IRCC through the webform is worth doing, particularly to confirm you have not missed a request for additional documents.
