How Long Do Student Loans Stay on Your Credit Report?

Student loans stay on your credit report for different lengths of time depending on how the account was handled. Late payments, collections, and defaults must come off after seven years under federal law. Loans you paid off in good standing can stay for up to ten years from the date of last activity. One category — defaulted Perkins Loans — can report indefinitely until the balance is paid.

Seven Years for Late Payments and Defaults

The Fair Credit Reporting Act caps negative information on your credit report at seven years, and that cap applies to both federal and private student loans.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c – Requirements Relating to Information Contained in Consumer Reports Each individual late payment has its own seven-year countdown, and so does a default notation.

For federal student loans, default is triggered after 270 days of missed payments.2Federal Student Aid. Student Loan Default and Collections FAQs At that point the servicer reports the default to the credit bureaus and the account may be sent to collections. One thing worth knowing: even after the negative marks fall off, federal student loan debt itself has no statute of limitations, and collectors can still pursue it.3Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. When the Clock Actually Starts

The seven years does not start the day you missed a payment. For accounts placed in collection, the clock begins 180 days after the first delinquency that led to the collection — the first missed payment you never brought current.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c – Requirements Relating to Information Contained in Consumer Reports In practice, the total time from first missed payment to removal runs closer to seven and a half years.

Selling the debt to another collector, transferring servicers, or consolidating does not reset this clock. Federal guidelines require furnishers to maintain written policies that prevent “re-aging,” meaning they cannot push the date of first delinquency forward.4Federal Trade Commission. Consumer Reports – What Information Furnishers Need to Know A defaulted loan that reappears with a newer delinquency date after a transfer is an error you can dispute.

Up to Ten Years for Accounts in Good Standing

A student loan you paid off on time and closed in good standing can remain on your credit report for up to ten years from the date of last activity.5TransUnion. How Closing Accounts Can Affect Credit Scores This works in your favor. A long record of on-time payments helps your score by extending the average age of your accounts and showing reliable repayment.

When the ten years are up, the account drops off automatically, and you may see a small score fluctuation when it does. If a loan had some late payments followed by full repayment, the late payments still fall off after seven years, while the account itself can stay for the full ten as long as it was current when closed.6Experian. The Perkins Loan Exception

Perkins Loans do not follow the seven-year rule. Under the Higher Education Act, a defaulted Perkins Loan can be reported on your credit file indefinitely, until you pay the balance in full. The statute explicitly sets aside the Fair Credit Reporting Act’s usual time limits for these loans.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 20 USC 1087cc – Agreements With Institutions of Higher Education No other student loan type carries indefinite reporting.

The Perkins Loan Program ended in 2017, with the last disbursements made by June 30, 2018.8Federal Student Aid. Participating in the Perkins Loan Program No new ones are being issued, but older borrowers still in default remain subject to the indefinite reporting rule.

There is a way out besides paying in full. Rehabilitating a defaulted Perkins Loan by making nine consecutive full monthly payments on time requires the school to instruct the credit bureaus to remove the default from your history within 30 days of your last qualifying payment.9eCFR. 34 CFR Part 674 – Federal Perkins Loan Program Unlike Direct Loan rehabilitation, Perkins rehabilitation requires full monthly payments set by your school, not reduced amounts based on income.

Removing a Default Before Seven Years Are Up

For Direct Loans and FFEL Program loans, rehabilitation is the only path that actually erases a default notation from your credit report ahead of the seven-year expiration. You must make nine voluntary, affordable monthly payments within a ten-consecutive-month window.10Federal Student Aid. Getting Out of Default The loan holder sets the payment amount based on your income. After the ninth qualifying payment, the Department of Education asks the credit bureaus to remove the default record.

Rehabilitation has a limit. The default itself is erased, but any individual late payments reported before the loan went into default remain on your report for their full seven years.10Federal Student Aid. Getting Out of Default Removing the default notation is still a major improvement, because a default status is one of the most damaging marks a report can carry.

The Fresh Start program, which previously allowed borrowers in default to return to current status and have the default removed, ended on October 2, 2024 and is no longer available.11Federal Student Aid. A Fresh Start for Federal Student Loan Borrowers in Default Rehabilitation and consolidation are the remaining ways out of default.

Consolidation, Refinancing, and Forgiveness

When you consolidate or refinance, your original loans are reported as closed, either “paid in full” or “transferred.”12Federal Student Aid. Credit Reporting Those closed accounts then follow the standard ten-year timeline for positive closed accounts. A new account for the consolidation loan appears with its own payment history starting from day one. Your report will show both the old closed loans and the new loan at the same time for a while, which is normal.

An important caveat if you are consolidating out of default: consolidating a defaulted federal loan does not remove the record of default from your credit history. The old account continues to show the default until the seven-year period runs out on its own.10Federal Student Aid. Getting Out of Default

When a federal loan is forgiven through Public Service Loan Forgiveness, income-driven repayment forgiveness, or another program, it is reported closed with a zero balance.12Federal Student Aid. Credit Reporting The closed account then follows the standard timeline: up to ten years if it was in good standing, or seven years from the date of first delinquency if it was past due at closing.

Borrower defense discharges work differently. When a loan is discharged because your school engaged in certain misconduct, the servicer sends a request to each credit bureau to remove the loan entirely from your report. That request goes out within 30 days of the discharge being completed, and the update can take up to 60 days to appear.13Nelnet – Federal Student Aid. Borrower Defense Updates Borrower defense applies only to Direct Loans, not to private loans or Perkins Loans.

Disputing an Entry That Should Be Gone

If a student loan entry is inaccurate — say, a default past the seven-year limit, or a delinquency date that was improperly re-aged after a transfer — you can dispute it. Credit bureaus must investigate disputes you submit and report the results back to you.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c – Requirements Relating to Information Contained in Consumer Reports

Contact Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion in writing. Include your contact information, the disputed account number, a clear explanation of the error, and copies of any supporting documents. The bureau forwards your dispute to the furnisher, which generally has 30 days to investigate and respond.14Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. How Do I Dispute an Error on My Credit Report For servicer-specific problems, like payments not credited or a default still showing after rehabilitation, file directly with the servicer and, if needed, with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
