A routine U.S. passport takes four to six weeks once your application reaches a processing center, and expedited service takes two to three weeks. That is the answer to how long passports take to get, but it is only part of the picture: the clock does not start until your paperwork physically arrives at a passport agency, and the finished passport still has to be mailed back to you. Door-to-door, a routine application often runs eight to ten weeks, while a true emergency can be handled in days.
Routine vs. Expedited Timelines
The State Department publishes two service levels. Routine processing runs four to six weeks, and expedited processing runs two to three weeks.1U.S. Department of State. Processing Times for U.S. Passports Expedited service costs an extra $60 on top of the regular application fee.2U.S. Department of State. Renew Your Passport by Mail The surcharge is authorized by 22 C.F.R. ยง 51.56, which lets the State Department charge for priority handling at its agencies and centers.3eCFR. 22 CFR 51.56 – Expedited Passport Processing
These windows have shifted before. The department previously quoted six to eight weeks for routine service and cut it to four to six as backlogs eased. Demand climbs in spring and early summer with vacation travel, and processing times can creep back up then. Before you apply, check the department’s processing-times page for the current estimate.
Why the Real Wait Runs Longer
The processing clock only starts when your application physically arrives at a passport agency or center. A mailed application can take up to two weeks to get there. After your passport is printed, standard return delivery adds another one to two weeks. A “four to six week” routine application often becomes eight to ten weeks in practice.2U.S. Department of State. Renew Your Passport by Mail
You can shorten the return leg by paying $22.05 for one-to-three-day delivery of your finished passport book. The fee only applies to U.S. mailing addresses and does not cover passport cards.4U.S. Department of State. United States Passport Fees for Acceptance Facilities If your trip is less than three months away, paying for both expedited processing and faster delivery is a reasonable hedge.
One way to skip the front-end mail delay entirely is online renewal. Eligible citizens can now renew their passports online for routine service, which can shave up to two weeks off the total wait.2U.S. Department of State. Renew Your Passport by Mail Eligibility is narrower than for mail renewal, and the State Department’s renewal page lists the specific requirements.
Getting a Passport Faster When You’re Traveling Soon
Urgent International Travel
If you have confirmed international travel within 14 calendar days, or need a foreign visa within 28 calendar days, you can book an appointment at a passport agency for in-person service. Appointments are the only way in, and slots fill fast. You schedule through the State Department’s Online Passport Appointment System, which asks about your travel dates first to confirm you qualify.5U.S. Department of State. Make an Appointment at a Passport Agency or Center If you have already mailed in an application and need to speed it up, call 1-877-487-2778 to arrange an agency appointment instead.
Life-or-Death Emergencies
If an immediate family member abroad has died, is in hospice, or has a life-threatening illness or injury, and you need to travel within two weeks, you can request an emergency appointment at a passport agency.6U.S. Department of State. Get a Passport if You Have a Life-or-Death Emergency Expect to bring supporting documentation such as a death certificate, mortuary statement, or letter from a hospital.
What Can Slow You Down or Block You
Timing assumes a clean application. Several situations extend the wait or stop it cold.
Child Applications
Children under 16 must apply in person, and both parents or legal guardians have to appear at the acceptance facility with the child.7U.S. Department of State. Apply for a Child’s Passport Under 16 If one parent cannot be there, the absent parent must submit a signed and notarized Form DS-3053 with a photocopy of their ID. That consent expires 90 days after the notary signs it, so do not get it notarized too far ahead of your application date.8U.S. Department of State. Statement of Consent – U.S. Passport Issuance to a Child Missing consent is one of the most common reasons a family’s timeline slips.
A parent with sole legal custody can skip the consent step by providing a court order, the other parent’s death certificate, or a birth certificate listing only one parent. If the other parent cannot be located, Form DS-5525 with a written explanation is the workaround.8U.S. Department of State. Statement of Consent – U.S. Passport Issuance to a Child Applicants 16 and 17 do not need both parents present, only evidence that at least one parent knows about the application.
Denials and Revocations
Federal regulations bar the State Department from issuing a passport if you have an outstanding federal arrest warrant for a felony, are under a court order or a condition of probation or parole that forbids leaving the country, have been served with a subpoena in a federal felony investigation, or are subject to a court-ordered commitment to a mental institution.9eCFR. 22 CFR 51.60 – Denial and Restriction of Passports
Past-due child support also triggers a block. If the Department of Health and Human Services certifies that you owe, the State Department will deny your application.9eCFR. 22 CFR 51.60 – Denial and Restriction of Passports
Unpaid federal taxes are a separate and increasingly common cause of delay. If you owe more than $66,000 in assessed federal tax debt including penalties and interest, the IRS certifies that debt to the State Department, which then holds your application open for 90 days while you work it out. If you do not enter a payment arrangement or pay in full inside that window, your application is denied and closed. The IRS can also ask the State Department to revoke an existing passport if you have been uncooperative, particularly if you have offshore assets that could resolve the debt.10Internal Revenue Service. Revocation or Denial of Passport in Cases of Certain Unpaid Taxes The threshold adjusts annually for inflation, so check the IRS page if you are close to that line.
Tracking Your Application
After you submit, the State Department’s online status tool shows whether your application is being processed, has been approved, or has shipped. If you included an email address on the application, you will also receive automatic updates.11U.S. Department of State. Checking Your Passport Application Status Do not panic if nothing appears right away. There is usually a lag of a couple weeks before the system reflects anything, especially for mailed applications that have not yet reached a processing center.
The practical rule is simple. If your trip is more than three months out, routine service is usually fine. If it is closer to two months, pay for expedited processing and consider faster return delivery. Inside two weeks, an agency appointment is your only realistic option.
