A hold on a credit card can last anywhere from a few hours to 30 days, depending on the merchant and your card network. Standard retail purchases usually clear within one to five business days. Travel merchants (hotels, rental car companies, and cruise lines) can keep an authorization active for up to 30 days under Visa and Mastercard rules. The hold itself is a temporary freeze on part of your available credit, not an actual charge, and it stays in place until the merchant submits the final amount or the network’s time limit runs out.
The Maximum Windows Set by Visa and Mastercard
The outer limit of any hold is fixed by the card network, not the merchant or your bank. These ceilings matter because a merchant who waits until the last allowed day to submit the final charge can leave the hold sitting on your account for the full window.
Visa’s limits run by transaction type:
- In-store purchases: 5 days from the authorization date
- Online or phone orders: 10 days from the authorization date
- Hotels, vehicle rentals, and cruise lines: 30 days from the authorization date
Mastercard uses a simpler split:
- Standard final authorizations: 7 calendar days from the authorization date
- Preauthorizations (commonly used for travel and rentals): 30 calendar days from the authorization date
Most holds clear well before these ceilings. They matter when something goes sideways in settlement, which happens most often with travel bookings.
Typical Timelines by Merchant Type
Standard Retail
Groceries, clothing, electronics in a store: the hold typically converts to a posted charge within one to three business days. Speed depends on how often the retailer batches sales, and weekend or holiday timing can add a day. Online orders tend to run three to five days because many merchants wait until the item ships before finalizing the charge.
Hotels
Hotels authorize the room rate plus an incidentals buffer, often $50 to $200 per night. Disney World, for example, holds the remaining balance plus $100 for estimated incidentals and recharges the card every five days during longer stays.3Walt Disney World. Credit Card and Payment Card Holds at Disney World Resort Hotels Most hotels settle within one to two days after checkout, but the 30-day Visa window applies if settlement stalls.1Visa. Authorization and Reversal Processing Requirements for Visa Merchants A hotel hold still sitting a week after checkout is worth a phone call.
Rental Cars
Rental companies hold the estimated rental cost plus a security deposit, often $200 or more above the rental charges, and higher for luxury vehicles.4SIXT rent a car. Deposit Amounts and Approvals The company usually releases the hold within about 24 hours of return, but your bank may take several more days to restore your available credit. The post-return inspection is what stretches rental timelines compared with other categories.
Gas Stations
Pay-at-the-pump holds run anywhere from $1 to $175. Visa and Mastercard raised the ceiling from $125 in 2022 to accommodate higher fuel prices, and $175 is still the cap. Gas holds are typically the shortest of any merchant category: many issuers release them within a few hours once the actual pump total arrives, though some banks hold them up to 72 hours.
Cruise Lines
Cruise lines open your onboard account with an initial authorization and add incremental holds as spending grows. Royal Caribbean starts at $99.75 and tops up from there.5Royal Caribbean Cruises. Vacation Rentals
Vrbo and similar platforms give the host 14 days after checkout to inspect the property and file a damage claim against a refundable deposit. If no claim is filed, the refund processes automatically, and your bank may take another seven business days after that to restore the funds.6Vrbo. About Damage Deposits A vacation rental hold can realistically tie up credit for three weeks from checkout.
Why Your Bank Can Keep the Hold Longer Than the Merchant
Once the merchant finalizes or releases its side, your card issuer still controls when the hold disappears from your available credit. Many banks keep authorizations pending for five to seven business days as a buffer against fraud and processing errors. If the merchant never sends a final settlement message, the hold expires on its own at the network’s maximum window. In rare cases without any settlement data, a hold can persist through a full billing cycle before the system clears it.
Two people who pay identical bills at the same hotel can see holds release on different days simply because they bank with different issuers. The network ceilings cap the outside; your issuer’s internal timing determines the inside.
A Note on Debit Cards
The hold mechanics are the same whether you tap a credit card or a debit card, but the consequence is not. A credit card hold reduces your available credit line. A debit card hold freezes actual cash in your checking account. A $500 hotel hold against a $10,000 credit limit is barely noticeable; the same hold against a $1,200 checking balance can leave you unable to pay other bills for days. That is why some rental car companies refuse debit cards at pickup, or require extra documentation if they accept them.
How to Get a Hold Released Faster
The fastest path is to ask the merchant to send an authorization reversal, which is the specific message that tells your bank to drop the hold immediately. If a transaction was cancelled, or you’ve already checked out and settled, the merchant’s billing office can usually push the reversal with one message. When the reversal carries the correct transaction identifiers from the original authorization, holds drop within hours.7Visa. Authorization Reversals – The Importance of Providing the Correct Information
Get the merchant’s confirmation in writing: a reference number, the date of release, and the original authorization code. Then call the number on the back of your card and provide those details. Some issuers will remove the hold on the spot once they verify the reversal; others will tell you the hold has to expire on its normal timeline. Either way, documentation shortens the conversation.
If a transaction was voided or cancelled, Visa’s rules require the merchant to process the reversal. If the merchant refuses, escalate to a supervisor and note the date and time of the call. That record matters if the situation turns into a formal dispute.8Visa. Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules
When to Escalate to a Formal Dispute
If a hold converts into an incorrect posted charge, or a cancelled transaction gets billed anyway, the Fair Credit Billing Act gives you a dispute process with firm deadlines. It applies to credit cards, not debit cards.
You have 60 days from the date the statement containing the error was sent. The dispute must be in writing and sent to the billing inquiries address your issuer designates, which is not the payment address. Include your name, account number, the disputed amount, and a short explanation.9Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1666 – Correction of Billing Errors
Your issuer has 30 days to acknowledge the letter in writing, then two billing cycles (no more than 90 days total) to correct the error or explain why the charge stands. You can withhold payment on the disputed amount during the investigation, and the issuer cannot report you as delinquent on it.9Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1666 – Correction of Billing Errors If the result still doesn’t resolve the problem, you can write back within 10 days to maintain your refusal to pay and file a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.10Consumer Advice – FTC.
