How Long Are Fall Protection Harnesses Good For? OSHA Rules

Fall protection harnesses do not have a universal expiration date, and how long they are good for depends on condition rather than age. Neither OSHA nor ANSI sets a mandatory retirement year. A harness stays in service as long as it passes required inspections, shows no damage, and complies with the manufacturer’s instructions. That could mean two years for a harness on a coastal jobsite battered by salt air, or a decade for one stored properly and used occasionally indoors.

The Five-Year Rule Is a Myth

Many workers still treat five years as a hard retirement deadline. It isn’t. The number comes from an older industry convention, back when some manufacturers stamped a five-year life on polyester and nylon webbing components. Advances in synthetic fiber engineering mean well-maintained harnesses can last well beyond that without losing meaningful tensile strength. Your manufacturer’s instructions are the exception. OSHA expects you to follow them, so if the tag on your harness says “retire five years from date of manufacture,” that is your deadline regardless of what federal regulations leave open. Other manufacturers now state their harnesses can stay in service indefinitely as long as they pass inspection. Read the tag on your specific model before assuming either way.

One more nuance on when the clock starts. Most manufacturers begin counting service life from the date of manufacture printed on the tag, but some start from the date of first use. A harness sitting in original sealed packaging is not immune to aging either, since warehouse storage can expose it to heat, humidity, and rodent damage. Check your documentation for which date governs.

What OSHA Actually Requires

OSHA makes the condition of the equipment the legal standard. The Inspections That Determine Service Life

Because retirement is condition-based, inspections are what actually decide when a harness’s life ends. There are two.

Pre-Use Inspection

Both OSHA standards require every personal fall arrest system to be inspected before each use for wear, damage, and deterioration. This is not optional, and it cannot be replaced by a weekly or monthly check. Annual Formal Inspection

ANSI/ASSP Z359.11 Section 6.1.1 requires that harnesses also be inspected by a competent person other than the user at intervals of no more than one year.5The ANSI Blog. A competent person, in OSHA’s usage, is someone who can identify hazards in fall protection equipment and has authority to remove defective gear from service. The role is defined by capability and authority rather than a specific credential. In practice, this is often a safety manager or someone who has completed manufacturer-specific training.

Annual inspections should generate documentation that records the date, inspector’s name, harness serial number, components checked, and pass or retire decision. That paper trail matters enormously if a harness is later involved in an incident.

Physical Signs That End a Harness’s Life

Knowing what disqualifies a harness is the whole point of condition-based retirement. During both inspections, you are checking webbing, hardware, and stitching against specific failure criteria.6Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Harness Inspection Guide

Webbing

  • Cuts, nicks, or tears. Even a small slice through several yarns compromises the load-bearing capacity of the strap.
  • Fraying or broken fibers. Run your fingers along every strap and look for fuzzy spots where fibers pull away from the weave.
  • Heat damage. Hard or shiny spots indicate excessive heat exposure. Polyester and nylon webbing should not be used above 180°F (82°C).
  • Chemical exposure. Discoloration, unusual stiffness, or a tacky feel can indicate contamination. This is common with harnesses stored near batteries, where acid leaks can silently eat through fibers.
  • UV degradation. Significant fading combined with brittle or stiff texture means ultraviolet radiation has broken down the fibers. This is the slow killer, easy to miss without a new harness for comparison.

Hardware

D-rings, buckles, grommets, and adjusters need to function under extreme dynamic loads during a fall. Inspect every metal component for distortion, rough or sharp edges, cracks, and corrosion. Tongue buckles should overlap the frame and move freely. If a buckle sticks, a D-ring shows a bend, or any component does not move the way it did when new, pull the harness.

Stitching

Stitching patterns are engineered to specific thread counts and configurations. Broken threads, pulled stitching, or unraveling at any connection point means the load path is compromised. Pay particular attention to junctions where webbing meets hardware, since those points carry the highest stress during a fall arrest.

Labels

Every harness must have a legible tag identifying the model, date of manufacture, manufacturer, applicable standard, load rating, and any warnings. If that tag is missing, unreadable, or cut off, the harness must be removed from service. A structurally perfect harness with a faded tag is functionally useless, because an inspector has no way to evaluate it against the manufacturer’s specifications if those specifications cannot be identified.

What Happens After a Fall Arrest

A widely taught “one and done” rule holds that any harness involved in a fall must be destroyed. The actual federal regulation is more nuanced. In practice, most employers and manufacturers treat post-fall harnesses as retired. The forces involved in arresting a fall can create internal fiber damage invisible to even a thorough visual inspection. Many manufacturers explicitly state in their instructions that a harness must be destroyed after a fall event, and since those instructions carry weight under OSHA’s framework, that effectively makes destruction mandatory for those products.

Many modern harnesses include built-in load indicators, small sections of folded webbing held by breakaway stitching that deploy visibly during a fall. If those indicators have activated, the harness has absorbed significant force. The decision is straightforward: take it out of service.

Storage and Handling That Extend or Shorten Life

How a harness is stored between uses has an outsized effect on how long it lasts. A harness thrown in the bed of a pickup truck will degrade far faster than one hung in a climate-controlled equipment room, even if they were purchased the same day.

  • Store harnesses in a cool, dry area away from direct sunlight. UV exposure is cumulative, and a harness hanging in a window between shifts is absorbing damage.
  • Keep harnesses away from batteries, solvents, acids, and any corrosive chemicals. Battery acid leaks are a common source of hidden chemical damage in shared storage areas.
  • Do not pile heavy tools or materials on stored harnesses. Compression can deform hardware and crease webbing in ways that weaken fibers at the fold.

For cleaning, use mild soap and warm water below 90°F. A soft nylon brush works for caked mud. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners and bleach; even diluted bleach used repeatedly can degrade nylon and polyester over time. Check the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions for your model before using any product beyond plain water. After washing, hang the harness to air dry away from heat sources. Never use a clothes dryer or heat gun.

Penalties for Keeping a Harness in Service Too Long

These are per-violation amounts. On a jobsite with multiple workers wearing defective harnesses, a single OSHA visit can produce citations that multiply quickly. The pre-use check, the annual documented inspection, and the manufacturer’s own retirement rules are what keep a harness legally in service, and what keep an employer out of that penalty range.
