That upgrade only works for addresses inside the United States, and it does not cover passport cards. Two tiers move faster than paid expedited service, and both require you to qualify.
Urgent Travel Appointments
The State Department operates over two dozen passport agencies and centers, in cities including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Miami, and Seattle. They serve customers by appointment only. You qualify if you are traveling internationally within 14 calendar days, or if you need a foreign visa within 28 calendar days.4U.S. Department of State. If you have not yet applied, book through the State Department’s Online Passport Appointment System. If you have already submitted and your travel date moved up, call 1-877-487-2778. Bring proof of your upcoming travel, such as a printed flight itinerary or hotel confirmation, plus the standard application materials. Life-or-Death Emergency Service
The fastest tier is reserved for genuine emergencies. You may qualify if you need to travel abroad within the next two weeks because an immediate family member outside the United States has died, is in hospice care, or has a life-threatening illness or injury. You will need documentation such as a death certificate, a signed statement from an attending physician, or a funeral home notice. The State Department verifies these claims, and the bar for approval is high. This is not a workaround for a last-minute vacation booking.
What Expedited Service Costs
The expedite fee itself is $60, added on top of the base application fees. For a passport book in 2026:
- First-time adult applicant (16 or older): $130 application fee plus a $35 execution fee at the acceptance facility plus the $60 expedite fee, for $225 total.
- Adult renewal by mail: $130 application fee plus the $60 expedite fee, for $190 total. No execution fee applies to mail-in renewals.
- Minor under 16: $100 application fee plus $35 execution fee plus $60 expedite, for $195 total.

Private Courier Companies
Private “passport expeditors” will submit your application and pick up the finished passport on your behalf, charging their own service fees of $100 to several hundred dollars on top of government fees. They are not part of the State Department, and using one does not guarantee a faster result than applying directly. How to Request Expedited Processing
By Mail (Renewals on Form DS-82)
Place your completed Form DS-82, current passport, photo, and payment in a sturdy envelope, and write “EXPEDITE” clearly on the outside. Use a trackable shipping method such as USPS Priority Mail Express so you have delivery confirmation. That tracking number is your only proof the package arrived until the State Department updates your application status, which can take a couple of weeks.8U.S. Department of State. To use DS-82, you must be able to submit your most recent passport with the application, it cannot have been mutilated, damaged, lost, or stolen, and it must have been issued when you were 16 or older.
In Person at an Acceptance Facility (First-Time Applicants, Form DS-11)
First-time applicants and anyone under 16 must apply in person at an acceptance facility using Form DS-11. Post offices, county clerk offices, and libraries often serve as acceptance facilities. Bring your completed but unsigned form, citizenship documents such as a certified birth certificate or certificate of naturalization, a valid photo ID, a compliant photograph, and payment. Tracking Your Application and Catching Delays Early

Do not panic if nothing shows up right away. It commonly takes a couple of weeks after submission before the system reflects that your application is being processed. Once adjudication is complete, the status changes to “Shipped.” If the status has not updated after several weeks, or if you see a hold or a request for additional documentation, call 1-877-487-2778 rather than waiting.
