After biometrics, most green card applicants wait anywhere from a few months to more than two years for a decision on Form I-485. Family-based cases generally run about 6 to 18 months from filing to approval, and employment-based cases about 11 to 31 months. Biometrics happens early in that window, usually within a few weeks of filing, so most of the wait sits on the far side of the appointment. How long after biometrics you will get your green card depends on your category, whether USCIS calls you for an interview, the backlog at the office handling your case, and, for anyone who is not an immediate relative of a U.S. citizen, whether your priority date is current on the monthly Visa Bulletin.
What USCIS Is Doing While You Wait
Your biometrics appointment starts several background processes at once. Your fingerprints go to the FBI for a criminal check, and USCIS uses your photograph and signature to confirm your identity against your application.1U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Preparing for Your Biometric Services Appointment For I-485 cases, USCIS does not reuse older prints or photos, so everyone appears in person.2U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Once the checks clear, an officer reviews your full file: the petition, supporting documents, and financial evidence. If something is missing or unclear, the officer may send a Request for Evidence asking for specific documents by a deadline.3U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. USCIS Policy Manual Volume 1, Part E, Chapter 6 – Evidence An RFE is not a denial, but a late or thin response can sink the case. When the record is complete, the case moves to final adjudication, sometimes after an interview.
Typical Wait Times by Category
Your category is the single biggest factor. As of early 2026, Form I-485 processing times run roughly:
- Family-based, including immediate relatives: about 6 to 18 months from filing to decision.
- Employment-based: about 11 to 31 months from filing to decision.
Those ranges cover the entire I-485, not just the stretch after biometrics. Since biometrics is scheduled within a few weeks of filing, most of the range still lies ahead of you at the appointment. These are averages across offices; yours may be faster or slower depending on caseload and staffing.
Immediate relatives of U.S. citizens (spouses, unmarried children under 21, and parents) have a built-in advantage: immigrant visas are always available for this group, so there is no Visa Bulletin wait.4U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Priority Dates Can Extend the Wait
If you are not an immediate relative, part of your timeline sits outside USCIS’s hands. Your priority date is generally the date your relative or employer filed the immigrant petition, or, where a labor certification was required, the date the Department of Labor accepted it.6U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. When to File Your Adjustment of Status Application for Family-Sponsored or Employment-Based Preference Visas
Each month, the State Department’s Visa Bulletin posts cutoff dates by preference category and country of birth. If your priority date is earlier than the cutoff (or the chart shows “C” for current), you can move forward. If not, you wait, no matter how long ago you did biometrics. Applicants born in India, China, Mexico, and the Philippines often see waits that stretch years beyond what USCIS processing alone would suggest. The dates do move, so check monthly.
Interview or Waiver: The Biggest Scheduling Variable
USCIS policy calls for an interview in every adjustment case unless an officer waives it. Waivers are decided case by case, but certain categories are more likely to qualify:7U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. USCIS Policy Manual Volume 7, Part A, Chapter 5 – Interview Guidelines
- Unmarried children under 21 of U.S. citizens who filed their own I-485 or filed together with family members all eligible for a waiver.
- Parents of U.S. citizens.
- Unmarried children under 14 of lawful permanent residents under similar filing conditions.
A waiver can cut weeks or months off your wait because you skip the scheduling queue at the local field office. Employment-based cases have also seen waivers in recent years, though USCIS has not published a blanket rule for specific EB categories. Whether one comes through depends on the strength of your file and the officer’s judgment.
If you are called in, the interview happens at your local USCIS field office. Bring the appointment notice, a valid photo ID, and originals of every supporting document you submitted: birth and marriage certificates, tax returns, pay stubs, and, for marriage cases, evidence of a bona fide relationship.8U.S. Department of State. Immigrant Visa Interview Checklist Interviews usually run 15 to 30 minutes. After a successful interview, approval can come the same day or take additional weeks.
What Can Push Your Timeline Longer
Beyond category and priority date, common delays include incomplete filings, RFEs, security check hold-ups, and interview scheduling backlogs at busier offices. A clean application with clear documentation moves noticeably faster than one that generates back-and-forth.
One avoidable setback is missing your biometrics appointment. If you cannot make it, reschedule through your myUSCIS account rather than skipping it. The online tool works if you have not already rescheduled twice, the appointment is more than 12 hours away, and the date has not passed.9U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. USCIS Launches Online Rescheduling of Biometrics Appointments Past that window, call the USCIS Contact Center. USCIS considers timely requests made for good cause, meaning you need a real reason for not appearing. Failing to attend without rescheduling can stall or even deny your case, since USCIS cannot finish background checks without prints.
One rule catches waiting applicants off guard: leaving the United States while your I-485 is pending, without an approved advance parole document, causes USCIS to treat the application as abandoned.10U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
