How Hard Is It to Move from the US to Canada?

Moving from the US to Canada is harder than most Americans expect, and the hard part isn’t the border crossing. Canada’s main economic immigration route is a ranked competition: in a March 2026 Express Entry draw, only the top 4,000 candidates were invited, and the cutoff score was 393 out of 1,200.1Canada.ca. Express Entry Rounds of Invitations Canada has also cut its permanent residency target to 380,000 per year starting in 2026, about 20 percent below the 2024 peak.2Office of the Parliamentary Budget Officer. Demographic Implications of the 2026-2028 Immigration Levels Plan On top of that, US citizens keep filing US tax returns forever, arrive with no Canadian credit history, and often face a waiting period before provincial health coverage begins. None of it is impossible. All of it takes planning.

The Points Hurdle

Most economic immigration flows through Express Entry, which scores candidates using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). The government holds periodic draws and issues Invitations to Apply to the top-ranked people in the pool. If your score falls below the cutoff, you sit in the pool until either your score improves or the cutoff drops to meet it.

Points come from four broad areas. Core factors like age, education, language ability, and work experience carry up to 500 points for a single applicant or 460 with a spouse. A spouse’s own profile adds points. Skill combinations, such as strong language scores paired with Canadian work experience, add more. The single biggest lever is a provincial or territorial nomination, which adds 600 points and effectively guarantees an invitation.3Canada.ca. Express Entry Comprehensive Ranking System CRS Criteria

Age matters more than people expect. The scoring peak is 20 to 29 for the primary applicant, and points fall from there. Education points don’t count for foreign degrees until you get an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) from an approved organization confirming your credential matches a Canadian equivalent.4Canada.ca. Educational Credential Assessment – Express Entry Documents Language proficiency in English or French is tested through approved exams (IELTS, CELPIP, PTE Core, TEF Canada, or TCF Canada), and the results must be less than two years old both when you create your profile and when you submit the permanent residence application.5Canada.ca. Express Entry Language Test Results Retaking the language test with a higher score is one of the fastest ways to move a borderline profile above the cutoff.

Which Pathway Fits You

Difficulty depends heavily on which route matches your circumstances. There are several.

Express Entry

Express Entry manages three federal programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program for people with qualifying foreign or Canadian work experience, the Canadian Experience Class for those already working in Canada on a temporary permit, and the Federal Skilled Trades Program for qualified tradespeople.6Canada.ca. Express Entry Who Can Apply All three feed the same ranked pool.

Provincial Nominee Programs

Every province and territory except Quebec runs a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) that selects immigrants for specific local labor needs.7Government of Canada. Immigrate as a Provincial Nominee Many streams align with Express Entry, so a nomination adds the 600-point boost that makes an invitation nearly automatic. This is where applicants with CRS scores in the 300s and 400s often get through. The trade-off is you generally have to commit to living in the nominating province, and each program has its own rules and caps.

Family Sponsorship

A Canadian citizen or permanent resident spouse, partner, parent, or child can sponsor you.8Canada.ca. Sponsor Your Family Members to Immigrate to Canada The sponsor must be at least 18 and living in Canada.9Canada.ca. Sponsor Your Relatives Check if You Are Eligible There’s no CRS scoring involved, but spousal applications commonly run a year or more, and parent and grandparent sponsorship takes considerably longer because of annual intake caps.

Start-Up Visa

Entrepreneurs can qualify by securing backing from a designated Canadian organization: CAD $200,000 from a venture capital fund or CAD $75,000 from an angel investor group. Acceptance into a designated business incubator carries no minimum financial investment.10Government of Canada. What Is the Minimum Investment That I Need to Apply Through the Start-up Visa Program

Study Then Work Then Stay

Attending a Canadian school is one of the more reliable long routes. Graduating from an eligible designated learning institution qualifies you for a Post-Graduation Work Permit. A master’s degree earns up to three years regardless of program length, as long as the program ran at least eight months; other programs of two years or more also qualify for a three-year permit.11Canada.ca. Post-Graduation Work Permit The Canadian work experience you build during that time strengthens a later Express Entry profile through the Canadian Experience Class.

Rural Community Immigration Pilot

Smaller communities participate in the Rural Community Immigration Pilot, where designated local organizations recommend candidates with a job offer who intend to settle locally.12Government of Canada. Rural Community Immigration Pilot Apply for Permanent Residence Competition is lower, but you do need to be genuinely willing to live in a smaller town.

One useful feature for Americans: Canadian immigration law recognizes dual intent. You can apply for temporary status (a study or work permit) and permanent residency at the same time without either application being held against the other, provided an officer is satisfied you’ll respect the terms of any temporary stay.13Justice Laws Website. What You Have to Gather Before Applying

Documents are where applications stall. Start collecting these well before you plan to submit, because a single missing item can push your timeline by months.

Fees and Settlement Funds

Express Entry costs CAD $950 per adult applicant in processing fees, plus a Right of Permanent Residence Fee of CAD $575 per adult before residency is finalized, for a total of CAD $1,525 per adult. Biometrics add CAD $85 per person, capped at CAD $170 for a family of two or more.18Canada.ca. Citizenship and Immigration Application Fees Fee List All fees are non-refundable, even on a refusal.

Most Express Entry applicants must also show they have enough money to support themselves after arrival. The required amounts, updated in July 2025, are:

  • 1 person: CAD $15,263
  • 2 people: CAD $19,001
  • 3 people: CAD $23,360
  • 4 people: CAD $28,362
  • 5 people: CAD $32,168
  • 6 people: CAD $36,280
  • 7 people: CAD $40,392
  • Each additional person: CAD $4,112

You don’t have to show settlement funds if you already have a valid Canadian job offer or you’re applying under the Canadian Experience Class.19Government of Canada. Express Entry Proof of Funds The money has to be readily available and can’t be borrowed. IRCC confirms this through official bank letters or investment statements.

How Long It Takes

Most permanent residency applications go through the IRCC Permanent Residence Portal.20Government of Canada. Permanent Residence Portal After you submit, IRCC may request additional documents, and slow responses on your side extend the timeline.

Express Entry applications have historically been processed in roughly six months, though the actual number fluctuates with volume and IRCC capacity. Spousal sponsorship tends to run 12 months or longer. Parent and grandparent sponsorship can stretch to several years because of intake caps. Check IRCC’s processing time tool before you commit to a move date.

US Tax Obligations Follow You

This surprises most Americans who move. The United States taxes citizens on worldwide income regardless of where they live, so moving to Canada does not end your obligation to file a US tax return every year.21Internal Revenue Service. US Citizens and Resident Aliens Abroad You’ll also owe Canadian taxes as a Canadian resident, so you’re navigating two systems at once.

The US-Canada tax treaty and the foreign tax credit prevent most true double taxation. For 2026, the foreign earned income exclusion lets you exclude up to $132,900 of foreign earnings from US tax.22Internal Revenue Service. IRS Releases Tax Inflation Adjustments for Tax Year 2026 The foreign tax credit for taxes paid to Canada often offsets the rest, since Canadian rates are generally higher. But you only get those benefits by filing.

You also inherit financial account reporting. If your Canadian bank and investment accounts exceed $10,000 combined at any point during the year, you must file a Report of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts (FBAR) with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network.23FinCEN.gov. Reporting Maximum Account Value FATCA separately requires Form 8938 with your tax return if your foreign financial assets exceed $200,000 at year-end or $300,000 at any point during the year (those thresholds double for married filing jointly).24Internal Revenue Service. Summary of FATCA Reporting for US Taxpayers FBAR penalties are steep, and many Americans abroad don’t discover these rules until they’re already behind.

Living abroad on a calendar year gets you an automatic filing extension to June 15, with a further extension available to October 15.21Internal Revenue Service. US Citizens and Resident Aliens Abroad Interest still runs on any unpaid tax from the regular April deadline.

Healthcare Has a Waiting Period

Canada’s public health insurance is administered by each province, and new permanent residents can face a gap before coverage begins. Some provinces impose a waiting period of up to three months.25Canada.ca. Health Care in Canada Access Our Universal Health Care System Private insurance during that window isn’t optional; a single uninsured emergency room visit can cost thousands.

The exact wait varies. British Columbia, for example, requires the balance of the month you arrive plus two additional months.26Province of British Columbia. Coverage Wait Period Some provinces have shortened or eliminated their waiting periods. Contact the health ministry in your destination province before you move so you can line up interim coverage.

Your Credit History Doesn’t Cross the Border

The US and Canada operate separate credit reporting systems. You’ll arrive with no Canadian credit score no matter how strong your US file is. Some banks operate in both countries and may transfer an existing US relationship to a Canadian account, which helps. Bringing copies of your US credit reports to show Canadian lenders is worth doing, even though they’re not formally recognized.

Opening a Canadian bank account is straightforward for new permanent residents. Many major banks run newcomer programs with reduced fees and starter credit cards designed for immigrants without Canadian credit history. Set this up quickly, because you’ll need a Canadian account for rent, payroll deposits, and most bills.

Professional Licensing Rarely Transfers

If you work in a regulated profession (nursing, engineering, medicine, teaching, and so on), your US license won’t automatically be recognized. Each province has its own regulatory body for each profession, and requirements vary by both occupation and province. Contact the relevant regulator in your destination province before arriving to find out what exams, training, or documentation you’ll need.27Government of Canada. Foreign Credential Recognition The process takes time and money. Some professionals work in adjacent unregulated roles while they complete Canadian licensing.

Bringing Your Life With You

Household Goods

New settlers can import personal and household effects duty-free, as long as items were owned and used before arrival. You’ll complete a Personal Effects Accounting Document (BSF186) at the border listing everything you’re bringing. Items following later can still qualify if they’re declared on your initial list. One catch: selling or otherwise disposing of any imported item within 12 months of bringing it into Canada requires notifying the Canada Border Services Agency and paying the duties that would have applied.28Canada Border Services Agency. BSF186 Personal Effects Accounting Document

Vehicles

You can bring your US vehicle, but it must pass a Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV) inspection within 45 days of import. A vehicle that fails cannot remain in Canada, even after you’ve paid taxes and duties.29Government of Canada. Importing a Vehicle From the United States and Mexico The RIV inspection fee is around CAD $325 plus applicable taxes. Not every US model is admissible, and Canadian safety and emissions standards may require modifications, so verify your specific vehicle before you ship anything.

Pets

Dogs older than eight months traveling with their owner need proof of rabies vaccination issued by a licensed veterinarian within the previous three years. Puppies under three months are exempt from rabies vaccination but you must prove their age. Cats need a rabies vaccination certificate but no health certificate; kittens under three months are exempt from the rabies requirement.30Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. Your First Weeks in Canada

Apply for a Social Insurance Number (SIN) right after landing. You need one to work legally, file taxes, and access government programs. There’s no fee, and you can apply online, by mail, or in person using your Confirmation of Permanent Residence or Permanent Resident Card.31Government of Canada. Social Insurance Number Apply

Enroll in your province’s health insurance program immediately, even if coverage won’t start for weeks or months. Open a Canadian bank account if you haven’t already, and register for provincial services like a driver’s license. If you have school-age children, contact the local school board about enrollment. Most of this is well-documented on provincial government websites, and federally funded settlement organizations offer free help to new permanent residents.
