How Hard Is It for an American to Move to England?

Moving to England from the US comes down to one thing before anything else: getting the right visa. You cannot simply arrive and settle. You need either a job offer from a UK employer with a sponsor license, a place at a licensed UK university, or a qualifying family member already settled in the country. Everything else, from bank accounts to shipping the dog, follows that first decision.

The process is workable but unforgiving of shortcuts. Visa fees run into the thousands of pounds once you add the health surcharge. Salary and income thresholds are hard floors. And your US tax return does not go away when you cross the Atlantic.

You Can Visit Without a Visa, but You Cannot Stay

US citizens can enter the UK for up to six months as a Standard Visitor without applying in advance.1GOV.UK. Visit the UK as a Standard Visitor – Overview Visitor status will not let you work for a UK employer (paid or unpaid), claim public benefits, or string together back-to-back trips as a substitute for actually living there. If you plan to earn a living or put down roots, you need one of the routes below.

The Three Visa Routes Most Americans Use

The UK system is sponsorship-based. Someone on the UK side has to vouch for you before you apply.

Skilled Worker Visa

This is the standard route for Americans relocating for a job. You need a confirmed offer from a UK employer that holds an approved sponsor license, and that employer issues you a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS), a digital reference number containing your job title, salary, and sponsor details.2GOV.UK. Skilled Worker Visa – Overview The role must appear on the list of eligible occupations, your salary must meet the minimums, and you have to prove English language proficiency. You also need at least £1,270 in personal savings unless your employer covers maintenance on the CoS.3GOV.UK. Skilled Worker Visa – How Much It Costs

Student Visa

If you have been accepted onto a course at a licensed UK institution, the school issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), the reference number that proves your enrollment.4GOV.UK. Student Visa – Your Course You must be 16 or older, prove you can cover tuition plus living costs for your first year, and demonstrate English proficiency.5GOV.UK. Student Visa – Overview How long you can stay depends on your program length.

Family Visa

If your spouse, partner, parent, or child is already settled in the UK, meaning they have indefinite leave to remain, settled status, or British citizenship, you can apply to join them on a family visa.6GOV.UK. Family Visas – Apply, Extend or Switch – Overview You need evidence of the relationship (marriage certificates, shared financial records, proof of ongoing contact) and must meet a financial requirement.7GOV.UK. Family Visas – Apply, Extend or Switch – Information and Evidence You Must Provide

Specialized Routes

The Innovator Founder visa is for people setting up a genuinely new business in the UK.8GOV.UK. Innovator Founder Visa – Overview The Global Talent visa targets recognized or emerging leaders in academia, arts and culture, or digital technology, and does not require a job offer or employer sponsorship.9GOV.UK. Apply for the Global Talent Visa – Overview Both routes offer permanent residency after three years rather than the usual five.

The Money You Have to Earn or Show

Fall short on these figures and the application is refused. There is no discretion to argue with.

Skilled Worker Salary

You generally need to earn at least £41,700 per year or the published “going rate” for your specific occupation, whichever is higher.10GOV.UK. Skilled Worker Visa – Your Job Each occupation code has its own going rate, so a software developer and a nurse face different minimums. If you fall short of the standard threshold and your job is not in healthcare or education, you might still qualify at £33,400 per year, though fewer applicants clear that alternate bar.

Family Visa Income

If you are being sponsored by a spouse or partner, the combined household income must be at least £29,000 per year.11GOV.UK. Family Visas – Financial Requirements if Applying as a Partner or Spouse That figure jumped from £18,600 in April 2024. Savings above £16,000 can also satisfy the requirement, but the Home Office formula for converting savings into income equivalent is strict.7GOV.UK. Family Visas – Apply, Extend or Switch – Information and Evidence You Must Provide

What the Application Costs

For a Skilled Worker application from outside the UK, the fee is £769 for a visa up to three years and £1,519 for more than three years. If your job is on the immigration salary list, the fees drop to £590 and £1,160.3GOV.UK. Skilled Worker Visa – How Much It Costs Each dependent pays the same fee.

On top of that comes the Immigration Health Surcharge, which pays for NHS access during your stay. Most applicants pay £1,035 per year of the visa. Students and applicants under 18 pay £776 per year. For a three-year Skilled Worker visa, the surcharge alone is £3,105. You pay the full amount upfront, and from outside the UK you have seven working days to complete payment after the request is issued. Miss it and the application is refused automatically.12GOV.UK. Budget separately for document authentication. US birth and marriage certificates often need an apostille from the issuing state, running roughly $3 to $20 per document. Family visa applicants may also need translated documents and evidence packages that add up.

How the Application Actually Runs

Once you hold your sponsorship document (a CoS for work, a CAS for study, or the relationship evidence for family), you complete the application online through GOV.UK. Information must match your supporting documents exactly. You pay the visa fee and health surcharge during this step. After submitting, you book an appointment at a Visa Application Centre; in the US these are run by VFS Global in several major cities. You give fingerprints and a photograph, submit your passport, and upload or hand in supporting documents.

One thing Americans do not need: a tuberculosis test. The US is not on the UK’s list of countries requiring TB screening.13GOV.UK. Tuberculosis Tests for Visa Applicants – Countries Where You Need a TB Test to Enter the UK

Standard processing runs from a few weeks to several months depending on visa type and season. Priority and super-priority services exist for most categories if you need a faster decision.

Bringing Your Family and Your Pets

On a Skilled Worker visa, your spouse or civil partner and children under 18 can apply as dependents, each paying their own visa fee and health surcharge. Student visa dependents are more restricted: your partner and children can generally only join you if you are a government-sponsored student on a course longer than six months, or if you are on a PhD or research-based higher degree.14GOV.UK. Student Visa – Your Partner and Children If you have a child in the UK, apply for their dependent visa before they turn 18 if they want to remain.

Pets take months to prepare. Your dog or cat needs an ISO-compliant microchip (15 digits, meeting ISO 11784 and 11785), and the chip must be implanted before or on the same day as the rabies vaccination. Any rabies shot given before the microchip does not count.15Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. Pet Travel From the United States to the United Kingdom/Great Britain After the primary vaccination, wait at least 21 days before entering the UK. If more than 12 months pass after that first shot, you need a documented booster before travel.

Dogs also need a tapeworm treatment (specifically for Echinococcus multilocularis) by a USDA-accredited veterinarian between one and five days before entering the UK. Cats do not. Pets travel as cargo, not in the cabin, on commercial flights; only chartered private planes and assistance dogs are exempt.16GOV.UK. Bringing Your Pet Dog, Cat or Ferret to Great Britain – Travel Routes for Pets Approved airlines and routes change seasonally, so confirm the current list before booking.

Setting Up Life After You Land

Your eVisa

The UK is phasing out physical Biometric Residence Permits. For most applications made on or after 25 February 2026, you receive only an eVisa, a digital record of your status accessible through your UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) online account.17GOV.UK. Updates on the Move to eVisas You use it to prove your right to work and rent, so protect your UKVI account credentials the way you would a passport.

Renting

Every landlord in England has to verify a tenant’s right to live in the UK before signing a lease. With an eVisa, you generate a share code (nine characters starting with “R”) through the Home Office online service, and the landlord verifies your status electronically.18GOV.UK. Right to Rent Document Checks – A Guide to Immigration Documents for Tenants and Landlords If you still hold a physical document with a valid visa endorsement, that can be checked manually.

Healthcare

Register with a GP (general practitioner) surgery as soon as you can. You find a nearby practice, complete a registration form online or in person, and provide basic information like name, date of birth, and address.19NHS. Register With a GP Surgery Because you have already paid the health surcharge, you are entitled to NHS care on the same basis as any UK resident.

Driving

You can drive in Great Britain on your US license for 12 months after becoming a UK resident. After that, you need a full UK license.20GOV.UK. Driving in Great Britain on a Non-GB Licence The US does not have an exchange agreement with the UK, so you will take both the theory and practical tests. Many Americans book lessons even after decades behind the wheel; driving on the left with the steering wheel on the right is an adjustment.

Banking and Credit

Opening a UK bank account requires proof of identity (your passport) and proof of address. Your eVisa confirmation or a letter from your employer can help; digital-first banks tend to onboard new arrivals more easily. Credit is harder. US credit history does not transfer, so you start at zero. Registering on the electoral roll if eligible, putting household bills in your name, and spacing credit applications three to six months apart are the standard moves to build a UK credit profile.

Your US Tax Filing Does Not End

This is the piece that blindsides people. The United States taxes its citizens on worldwide income regardless of where they live. Moving to England does not end your obligation to file a US federal return.21Internal Revenue Service. US Citizens and Residents Abroad – Filing Requirements

You still file Form 1040 each year, reporting your global income. The foreign earned income exclusion lets you exclude up to $132,900 (2026) from US taxation if you meet either the bona fide residence test or the physical presence test.22Internal Revenue Service. IRS Releases Tax Inflation Adjustments for Tax Year 2026 The US-UK tax treaty provides a foreign tax credit mechanism, so taxes paid to the UK offset your US liability and prevent true double taxation on most income.23U.S. Department of the Treasury. Convention Between the Government of the United States of America and the Government of the United Kingdom – Relief From Double Taxation Because UK income tax rates are generally higher than US rates for comparable earners, many Americans in England owe little or no additional US tax. The filing itself is still required.

Once you open UK accounts, you likely trigger the FBAR (FinCEN Report 114). If the combined balance of all your foreign financial accounts exceeds $10,000 at any point in the year, you must report them electronically to FinCEN.24Internal Revenue Service. Report of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts (FBAR) You may also need Form 8938 (Statement of Specified Foreign Financial Assets) if your foreign assets clear higher thresholds.21Internal Revenue Service. US Citizens and Residents Abroad – Filing Requirements Penalties for missed FBARs can run $10,000 or more per unreported account per year.

The UK will separately consider you a tax resident under its Statutory Residence Test. Present for 183 days or more in a UK tax year and you are automatically resident and taxable on your worldwide income there too. Even below 183 days, enough ties (a home, family, employment) can make you resident. A tax professional who understands both systems is a real cost of the move, not an optional extra.

From Visa Holder to British Citizen

After five years on most work visas, you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), the UK’s equivalent of a green card.25GOV.UK. Check if You Can Get Indefinite Leave to Remain Global Talent and Innovator Founder holders can apply after three years. You pass the Life in the UK test (£50) and demonstrate English language proficiency.26GOV.UK. Book the Life in the UK Test The ILR application fee is £3,029 per person.

Once you hold ILR, you can apply for British citizenship. The standard route requires at least five years of lawful UK residence plus 12 months free of immigration time restrictions, so most people apply roughly six years after arrival.27GOV.UK. Guide AN – Naturalisation Booklet – The Requirements and the Process If you are married to a British citizen, the qualifying period is three years of lawful residence, and you need ILR on the date you apply rather than 12 months earlier. You score 75 percent or higher on the Life in the UK test if you have not already passed it, pay a £1,605 naturalisation fee, and a £130 ceremony fee.

Becoming British does not mean giving up US citizenship. Both countries allow dual nationality, so you can hold both passports. You will still file US taxes every year. Dual citizenship does not change that.
