AmeriCorps works by placing you in a paid service position with a nonprofit, public agency, tribal government, or federal partner for a defined term, and rewarding completion with a Segal Education Award of up to $7,395. During service you receive a living allowance, and depending on the program you may also get health coverage, relocation assistance, or childcare support. The agency runs three distinct programs, and which one fits depends on the kind of work you want to do, where you want to live, and how long you can commit.
The Three Programs and What Members Actually Do
AmeriCorps is not a single job. It is three programs with different structures.
AmeriCorps State and National
This is the largest branch. Rather than employing members directly, the agency gives grants to nonprofits, public agencies, tribal nations, and colleges, which then recruit and supervise their own members.1Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). A full-time term is 1,700 hours within one year. AmeriCorps VISTA
VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) focuses on poverty reduction. Members typically work behind the scenes at nonprofits and public agencies: writing grant applications, building volunteer recruitment systems, developing training programs, and creating infrastructure that continues after the term ends.1Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). AmeriCorps NCCC
The National Civilian Community Corps uses a team-based residential model. You live with your team on a regional campus and deploy together to short-term project sites around the country, usually working on disaster relief, conservation, or urban development. NCCC has three tracks: Traditional Corps, FEMA Corps (partnered with the Federal Emergency Management Agency), and Forest Corps (wildland fire and conservation). Who Can Join
You must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident. The minimum age for most programs is 17, and 17-year-olds need parental consent. A high school diploma or equivalent is generally required. If you do not have one yet, you can still enroll as long as you agree to earn your diploma or GED before using the education award. The Background Check
Every member must pass a National Service Criminal History Check before starting. That includes a search of the National Sex Offender Public Website and a fingerprint-based FBI check. Two findings disqualify you automatically: being listed on a sex offender registry, and a murder conviction.5AmeriCorps. How to Apply
Applications run through the MyAmeriCorps online portal. You create a profile with your personal information, education, and any relevant work or volunteer experience, then add at least two professional references. References should be supervisors, teachers, coaches, or mentors. Family members, friends, roommates, and co-workers do not qualify.6AmeriCorps. Completing Your AmeriCorps Application
Once your profile is complete, you search the portal for specific listings. Each listing describes the host organization, location, duties, and term length. You apply directly to the programs that interest you. Qualified applicants interview with the project sponsor or site supervisor, and after a successful interview and criminal history clearance you receive a formal placement offer.6AmeriCorps. What You Get Paid During Service
The living allowance covers basic expenses, not much more. The amount depends on the program and, for VISTA, on where you serve.
For AmeriCorps State and National, the minimum full-time living allowance was $20,400 per year (about $12 per hour) as of fiscal year 2025, with a maximum cost per member service year of $25,000.7Content.govdelivery. Taxes work differently by program. NCCC allowances have federal income tax, Social Security tax, and state income tax withheld based on your campus location.9My AmeriCorps. Social Security, Medicare, and state and local taxes are not withheld at the source, and VISTA members remain responsible for any state or local taxes owed.10AmeriCorps. Health Coverage
Full-time State and National members receive health coverage through their host program. It must cover physician services, emergency room visits, and hospital stays, with an annual deductible no greater than $250 and out-of-pocket costs capped at $1,000. These are minimum standards. The plans are limited-duration (under 364 days), may not cover preventive care or pre-existing conditions, and may not meet Affordable Care Act requirements. If you need broader coverage, the ACA marketplace is an option.
Relocation and Childcare
VISTA members who relocate more than 50 miles for their site receive a mileage-based travel allowance at $0.40 per mile and a one-time settling-in payment of $750, subject to federal tax withholding.11AmeriCorps. The Education Award
Finish your term and you earn the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award. You never touch the money directly. It pays tuition or other educational costs at qualifying institutions, or it repays qualified student loans, with AmeriCorps sending funds straight to the school or loan servicer.15My AmeriCorps. Taxes and Deadlines
The award is taxable federal income in the year you use it, not the year you earn it. Redeem the whole award in one calendar year and you owe tax on the whole amount that year. Spread it across years and you are taxed only on what you use each year. When total payments exceed $600 in a calendar year, you receive a Form 1099. You have seven years from the date you complete your term to use the award. The Lifetime Cap
You can serve more than once. No one, though, can earn more than the aggregate value of two full-time education awards over a lifetime. You can mix full-time, part-time, and reduced part-time terms to reach that ceiling. If You Leave Early
Completing your term is the only route to the full award. Leave early for compelling personal circumstances after finishing at least 15 percent of your required hours, and you receive a prorated award. Get released for cause (fired for misconduct) and you receive nothing from the National Service Trust. What Service Does for Your Career
VISTA alumni receive non-competitive eligibility (NCE) for federal jobs, lasting one year after service. That means federal agencies can hire you outside the standard competitive process. The window can be extended up to two additional years for military service, higher education, or other activities the hiring agency finds worth an extension.19AmeriCorps.
