How Do You Return a Money Order? Steps, Fees, and Lost Order Claims

To return a money order, bring the uncashed money order and your original purchase receipt back to the issuer that sold it — USPS, Western Union, or MoneyGram — either at a retail location or by mail with the correct refund or inquiry form. How much you pay and how long you wait depends on the issuer, whether you still have the receipt, and whether the money order is in your hands or lost.

What You Need Before You Start

Every issuer asks for the same core items:

  • The original money order, uncashed and undamaged.
  • The purchase receipt — the detachable stub from the sale. For USPS money orders, the receipt carries the serial number, Post Office number, and dollar amount needed to check status or file a claim.1USPS. Money Orders – The Basics
  • The correct form. USPS uses PS Form 6401 (Money Order Inquiry), which must be filled out in black ink with the serial number, date of purchase, and exact dollar amount. Western Union uses its Money Order Refund Request form for buyers who have a receipt. MoneyGram provides its own refund request form through its website.2USPS. • Government-issued photo ID to confirm you are the original purchaser.

Lost the receipt? The refund still exists, but it costs more and moves slower. USPS makes you mail the money order and PS Form 6401 to its St. Louis Accounting Service Center.1USPS. Returning an Unused Money Order You Still Have

For a USPS money order, take the instrument and receipt to any Post Office. A retail associate helps you complete PS Form 6401, confirms the money order has not been cashed, and processes the return. If the money order is simply spoiled or made out to the wrong person, USPS reissues a replacement on the spot at no charge when you bring both the money order and the receipt.1USPS. There is a cash cap at the counter. Post Office locations refund cash up to $35. For anything higher, the clerk issues a no-fee replacement money order or forwards the request to the administrative Post Office.4About USPS. For Western Union and MoneyGram money orders, some retail locations that sell them can process the refund on site; others will point you to mail or online submission. Ask the store where you bought it first.

If you have to mail your documents, send them certified with return receipt so you can prove delivery, and photocopy both sides of the money order and the receipt before it leaves your hands. USPS money orders returned without a receipt go to:

If the Money Order Is Lost or Stolen

You can still get your money back, but the issuer has to investigate before paying. That means a fee, a form, and a wait.

USPS

Bring your purchase receipt to any Post Office and ask a retail associate to open a Money Order Inquiry on PS Form 6401. The processing fee is $21.00. USPS then checks whether the money order has been cashed; if it has not, you get a replacement. The investigation can take up to 60 days.6USPS. Western Union

If both the money order and the receipt are gone, submit a Money Order Research Request form with a $30.00 non-refundable administrative fee, paid by check or money order. The form asks for the exact purchase amount, date, time, and store location. If the money order was stolen, include a copy of the police report. Processing runs six to eight weeks, and if the money order has not been cashed you may receive a refund of the face amount.7Western Union Financial Services, Inc. Money Order Research Request

MoneyGram

Without the serial number, MoneyGram requires a search form and a $40.00 non-refundable processing fee. You provide the exact purchase amount, exact date, payee name, and the store name and address. Signing the form authorizes MoneyGram to stop payment and agrees to hold it harmless for related expenses. The search takes up to 60 days. If the money order has not been cashed, MoneyGram issues a refund you can pick up at any MoneyGram location.8MoneyGram. Money Order Search Form

If It Has Already Been Cashed

Once someone cashes your money order, the face-value refund is off the table. What you can still get is a photocopy of the cashed instrument showing who endorsed and deposited it, which can support a police report or a fraud claim. For USPS money orders, photocopies are available only for two years from the date the money order was cashed, and you still pay the inquiry fee to get one. No claim for improper payment on a USPS money order is permitted more than one year after the money order was paid.1USPS. Money Orders – The Basics

Old Money Orders and Unclaimed Property

USPS domestic money orders do not expire and do not accrue interest, so the instrument itself carries no cash-by date.6USPS. Money Orders Western Union and MoneyGram may follow different policies; check with the issuer for an older instrument.

State unclaimed property laws are the real deadline. Every state requires financial institutions to turn over abandoned assets, including uncashed money orders, after a dormancy period that typically runs one to five years depending on the state and type of property. Once the issuer sends the funds to the state treasury, the issuer can no longer refund you; you would file an unclaimed property claim with that state. Most states allow those claims indefinitely, but you have to verify ownership through the state’s program.9Investor.gov. Escheatment If a money order has been sitting in a drawer for years, act now rather than adding a state claim to the process.
