To correct a 1099 after filing, submit a new form of the same type with the “CORRECTED” box checked at the top, either through the IRS’s IRIS online portal or on official pre-printed paper forms mailed with a Form 1096 to your assigned processing center. A wrong dollar amount takes one corrected form. A wrong name, taxpayer ID number, or wrong form type takes two: one that zeros out the bad filing and one that stands in as a clean replacement. Penalties climb the longer you wait, so the fix is time-sensitive.
Check Whether You Even Need to Correct
Small dollar errors may not require a correction at all. Under the de minimis safe harbor, if the difference between what you reported and the correct amount is $100 or less (or $25 or less for tax withholding figures), the IRS treats the return as correctly filed.1Federal Register. De Minimis Error Safe Harbor Exceptions to Penalties for Failure To File Correct Information Returns or Furnish Correct Payee Statements
One catch: the recipient can override the safe harbor. If a payee asks you for a corrected form even on a small error, you have to issue one. The safe harbor shields you from IRS penalties, not from a recipient’s request.
Identify Which Type of Error You Have
The IRS sorts 1099 mistakes into two categories, and the category dictates the whole process.2Internal Revenue Service. General Instructions for Certain Information Returns (2025)
Type 1: Wrong Amount, Code, or Checkbox
The form went to the right person but carries a wrong dollar figure, an incorrect reporting code, or a checkbox that shouldn’t have been marked. These are the simpler fixes. One corrected form replaces the old record.
A 1099 filed for someone you never actually paid is also handled as a Type 1 correction: prepare the corrected form, check the “CORRECTED” box, and enter zero in every payment box.
Type 2: Wrong Name, Wrong TIN, or Wrong Form Type
Type 2 covers deeper problems: a missing or incorrect Taxpayer Identification Number, a wrong recipient name (even a misspelling), or the wrong form altogether, such as a 1099-MISC where you should have filed a 1099-NEC. Because the original can’t be reliably matched to the right taxpayer’s account, the IRS needs two forms: one to nullify the bad record and one to create the correct one.
Complete a Type 1 Correction
Prepare a new 1099 of the same type you originally filed. Check the “CORRECTED” box at the top. Fill in every field exactly as it appeared on the original, except swap in the correct amount, code, or checkbox where the error was. That single form is the entire fix.2Internal Revenue Service. General Instructions for Certain Information Returns (2025)
Complete a Type 2 Correction
Type 2 requires two separate forms.
Step 1. Zero out the original. Prepare a new form of the same type. Check the “CORRECTED” box. Copy the payer, recipient, and account number information exactly as they appeared on the incorrect original, but enter zero in every payment box. This tells the IRS to nullify the earlier record.
Step 2. File a clean replacement. Prepare another new form showing the correct recipient name, TIN, and payment amounts. Do not check the “CORRECTED” box on this second one. The IRS treats it as a brand-new original filing.2Internal Revenue Service. General Instructions for Certain Information Returns (2025)
If you’re filing on paper, do not check the “VOID” box on any correction. VOID tells the IRS scanner to skip the form entirely, so a voided correction never gets processed.3Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Forms 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC
Before You File: Get the Right Paperwork
Pull the original 1099 so you can match its information field for field. Get the recipient’s correct legal name, current address, and valid TIN from a current Form W-9. The IRS’s TIN-matching service lets you verify a name-and-TIN combination against IRS records before you submit, which is worth using when the original error was a TIN problem.4Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for the Requester of Form W-9 (Rev. March 2024)
For paper filings, use the official pre-printed Copy A forms designed for machine scanning. You cannot print these from the IRS website; a penalty may be assessed for forms the IRS equipment can’t read.5Internal Revenue Service. You’ll also need Form 1096 as the transmittal cover sheet for any paper correction package.6Internal Revenue Service. About Form 1096, Annual Summary and Transmittal of U.S. Information Returns
If the Error Is in Your Own Payer Information
A wrong payer name or TIN cannot be fixed with a corrected 1099. Instead, write a letter to the IRS Information Returns Branch containing your name and address, the type of error, the tax year, your TIN, your Transmitter Control Code, the type of return, the number of payees affected, whether you filed on paper or electronically, and whether federal income tax was withheld. Mail it to the IRS Information Returns Branch, 230 Murall Drive, Mail Stop 4360, Kearneysville, WV 25430.2Internal Revenue Service. General Instructions for Certain Information Returns (2025)
If the situation involves duplicate reporting or a large percentage of incorrect returns, call the IRS information reporting customer service line at 866-455-7438 before mailing. They may give you specific instructions for the situation.
Submit the Correction to the IRS
Electronic Filing Through IRIS
Any business can file corrections for free through the IRS Information Returns Intake System (IRIS), a web-based portal that accepts manual data entry or CSV uploads.7Internal Revenue Service. E-file Information Returns With IRIS If you file ten or more information returns of any type during the calendar year, electronic filing is mandatory.8Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 801, Who Must File Information Returns Electronically
The older Filing Information Returns Electronically (FIRE) system still accepts 1099 corrections for tax year 2025, but the IRS plans to retire FIRE after filing season 2027. IRIS will then be the only electronic intake option, so if you’re still on FIRE, plan the transition now.9Internal Revenue Service. Filing Information Returns Electronically (FIRE)
Paper Filing
If you qualify to file on paper (fewer than ten total information returns for the year), mail your corrected 1099 with Form 1096 to the IRS processing center assigned to your state. The centers are in Austin, TX; Kansas City, MO; and Ogden, UT, and the right one depends on where your principal place of business sits.10Internal Revenue Service. Where to File Form 1096 Form 1096 should show the total number of corrected forms in the batch and the combined dollar amounts. Original and corrected returns of the same type can be submitted together under a single Form 1096.11Internal Revenue Service. Form 1096 Annual Summary and Transmittal Form for Certain Information Returns
Keep proof of mailing. Paper corrections take several weeks to process, and a certified mail receipt is your best evidence if the IRS later questions timing.
Send the Corrected Copy to the Recipient
Alongside the IRS filing, send a corrected copy to the recipient by mail or secure electronic delivery. They need accurate numbers for their own return, and failing to furnish a correct statement triggers a separate penalty under Section 6722 that mirrors the IRS-side tiers below.
If the only thing wrong is state or local tax information and the federal data was correct, don’t send the correction to the IRS. Contact the state or local tax department directly for their process.2Internal Revenue Service. General Instructions for Certain Information Returns (2025)
Penalties Grow the Longer You Wait
Section 6721 penalties escalate based on how late the correction lands, measured from the original filing deadline, not from when you spotted the mistake. For 2026 returns:12Internal Revenue Service. Information Return Penalties
- Corrected within 30 days of the filing deadline: $60 per return, up to $500,000 for the year.
- Corrected after 30 days but on or before August 1: $130 per return, up to $1,500,000.
- Not corrected by August 1: $340 per return, up to $3,000,000.
- Intentional disregard: $680 per return with no annual cap.
Smaller businesses get lower annual caps. If your gross receipts are $5,000,000 or less, the caps drop to $175,000, $500,000, and $1,000,000 for the three tiers respectively.13Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6721 – Failure to File Correct Information Returns
If You Received a Corrected 1099
Compare the corrected figures to what you already reported. If you haven’t filed your return yet, use the corrected numbers. If you’ve already filed and the correction changes your income or withholding, file Form 1040-X to update the IRS.14Internal Revenue Service. What to Do When a W-2 or Form 1099 Is Missing or Incorrect
If a 1099 you received has a small error and the payer hasn’t corrected it, you can request a correction; that request overrides the de minimis safe harbor and obligates the payer to issue one. In the meantime, report the correct income on your return regardless of what the 1099 shows. The IRS may flag the mismatch, but supporting records will resolve it.
