How Do I Pay Quarterly Taxes? Methods, Deadlines, and Safe Harbor

To pay quarterly taxes, estimate your yearly federal tax on IRS Form 1040-ES, subtract what will already be withheld, split the rest into four installments, and send each one by its deadline through IRS Direct Pay, EFTPS, a credit or debit card, cash at a retail partner, or a check mailed with the Form 1040-ES voucher. For 2026, the deadlines are April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15, 2027.1Internal Revenue Service. When Are Quarterly Estimated Tax Payments Due?

Do You Actually Have to Pay Quarterly

Federal tax is pay-as-you-go. Employers handle it through paycheck withholding, but when income comes in without withholding, the responsibility is yours. You generally need to make estimated payments if you expect to owe $1,000 or more in federal tax for the year after subtracting withholding and refundable credits.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6654 – Failure by Individual to Pay Estimated Income Tax

That typically catches freelancers, independent contractors, sole proprietors, partners, and S corporation shareholders. It also reaches people with meaningful investment income, rental income, alimony, or capital gains, and retirees whose pension or Social Security withholding doesn’t cover the full bill. The question isn’t the label on the income. It’s whether enough tax is being withheld overall to cover what you’ll owe.

Figuring Out How Much to Send Each Quarter

Form 1040-ES includes a worksheet that walks through the math step by step.3Internal Revenue Service. About Form 1040-ES, Estimated Tax for Individuals Start by estimating your adjusted gross income, taxable income, deductions, and credits for the year. Last year’s return is the best starting point, because it captures the income sources and deductions that tend to repeat.

If you’re self-employed, the same form has a Self-Employment Tax and Deduction Worksheet that adds Social Security and Medicare on your business income, using 92.35% of net self-employment profit as the base.4Internal Revenue Service. Form 1040-ES, Estimated Tax for Individuals The result flows into the main estimated tax worksheet, so a single number covers both income tax and self-employment tax.

Once you have that total, subtract any tax that will be withheld from wages, pensions, or other sources. Divide what’s left by four. If you overpaid last year and applied the refund to this year’s estimated tax, that credit counts toward your first quarter.5Internal Revenue Service. Estimated Tax

The Safe Harbor That Protects You From Penalties

You won’t owe an underpayment penalty if your payments meet at least one of two thresholds: 90% of the current year’s tax, or 100% of the tax shown on your prior year’s return, whichever is smaller.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6654 – Failure by Individual to Pay Estimated Income Tax The prior-year option is a lifeline when your income spikes. If you paid enough to match last year’s tax, you’re protected no matter how much more you end up owing.

Higher earners face a stricter version. If your adjusted gross income on the prior year’s return was over $150,000 ($75,000 if married filing separately), the prior-year threshold rises to 110% of that year’s tax.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6654 – Failure by Individual to Pay Estimated Income Tax Someone who earned $200,000 and paid $40,000 in tax last year needs at least $44,000 in withholding plus estimated payments this year to stay in the safe harbor, not $40,000.

Watch your actual income as the year unfolds. If earnings run higher or lower than expected, recalculate and adjust the remaining installments.

2026 Deadlines

Federal estimated payments are due four times a year, and the periods they cover aren’t even:

  • April 15, 2026 — for income earned January 1 through March 31
  • June 15, 2026 — for income earned April 1 through May 31
  • September 15, 2026 — for income earned June 1 through August 31
  • January 15, 2027 — for income earned September 1 through December 31

All four fall on weekdays in 2026, so no dates shift.1Internal Revenue Service. When Are Quarterly Estimated Tax Payments Due? When a deadline lands on a weekend or legal holiday in other years, the payment is timely on the next business day, whether submitted electronically or postmarked by mail.

Note that the second period only covers two months. People who start freelancing in the spring are often caught off guard by the June deadline arriving barely two months after the April one.

The Payment Methods

Which method to use mostly comes down to whether you’re willing to pay a processing fee.

Direct Pay and EFTPS (Free)

IRS Direct Pay moves money straight from a checking or savings account at no cost.6Internal Revenue Service. Pay Personal Taxes From Your Bank Account There’s no account to set up. You verify your identity, choose “estimated tax” as the reason, pick the correct tax year, and submit. Confirmation is immediate.

The Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS) requires enrollment in advance but adds something Direct Pay doesn’t have: you can schedule payments up to 365 days ahead.7U.S. Department of the Treasury. Your Guide for Paying Taxes If you know your quarterly amounts in January, you can queue all four at once. Enrollment needs your Social Security number, bank account details, and the address the IRS has on file.

Credit and Debit Card

The IRS accepts card payments through approved processors, for a fee. Processing charges generally run 2.49% to 2.95% of the payment, with minimum fees from zero to $3.95 depending on the processor.8Internal Revenue Service. Pay by Debit or Credit Card When You E-File On a $5,000 quarterly payment, 2.5% is $125 straight out of pocket. Unless card rewards beat that, use a bank transfer.

Cash at a Retail Partner

To pay in cash, generate a payment barcode on the IRS website and take it to a participating retailer through the VanillaDirect system. Locations include Dollar General, CVS Pharmacy, Walgreens, 7-Eleven, and Walmart. Each transaction is capped at $500, but there’s no daily limit on how many you can make, and the barcode expires 20 days after it’s issued.9Internal Revenue Service. Check or Money Order by Mail

You can still send a paper check or money order with the payment voucher torn from Form 1040-ES. The voucher goes to the IRS processing center listed in the form instructions for your geographic area. Use certified mail or a delivery service that provides a postmark, because that date is your proof of timely payment if the envelope takes its time.

What Happens If You Underpay

If your payments and withholding fall short, the IRS charges a penalty at the underpayment interest rate, currently 7% per year, compounded daily, applied separately to each installment for the period it stayed unpaid.10Internal Revenue Service. Interest Rates Remain the Same for the First Quarter of 2026 Missing the April payment costs more than missing the January one, because the money was late longer.

No penalty applies if:

Even when a penalty technically applies, the IRS may waive or reduce it. Qualifying reasons include a casualty or disaster that made timely payment impractical, or retirement after age 62 or disability within the past two years where there was reasonable cause for the underpayment.11Internal Revenue Service. Underpayment of Estimated Tax by Individuals Penalty A waiver request is a written explanation, signed under penalty of perjury, sent to the address on your IRS notice.

When Your Income Doesn’t Arrive Evenly

Four equal payments work when income arrives steadily. When it doesn’t — seasonal work, freelance contracts that cluster, a late-year capital gain — equal installments can trigger penalties for the lean quarters even though the year’s total was paid in full.

The annualized income installment method fixes this. Using Form 2210, Schedule AI, you recalculate each quarter’s required payment based on income actually received during that period rather than dividing the annual total.12Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 2210 (2025) If you earned almost nothing in the first quarter and most of your money in the fourth, this method sharply reduces or eliminates the required first-quarter payment.

Using it means completing Schedule AI for all four periods, checking box C in Part II of Form 2210, and attaching the completed form to your annual return. The extra paperwork pays off when income genuinely swings from quarter to quarter.

Two Things That Don’t Follow the Standard Rules

If at least two-thirds of your gross income comes from farming or fishing in either the current or prior year, you can make a single estimated payment by January 15 and avoid the underpayment penalty, or skip estimated payments and file your return with full payment by March 1.13Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 416, Farming and Fishing Income

Federal estimated payments are separate from state ones. Most states with an income tax require quarterly estimated payments on a similar schedule, but thresholds and due dates vary — some trigger the requirement at $500 or less, and a few use dates that don’t line up with the federal calendar. Nine states have no individual income tax on wages and salaries. Missing a state payment produces its own penalty on top of any federal one, so check your state tax agency’s rules directly.
