To know if your accountant filed your taxes, ask for the IRS e-file acceptance acknowledgment, which the IRS sends back to your preparer’s software within 24 hours of transmission. That single document is the strongest proof your return reached the IRS. You can then confirm it yourself through your IRS online account, the “Where’s My Refund?” tool, or an official tax transcript. This matters because the IRS holds you, not your preparer, responsible for filing on time, and the failure-to-file penalty starts at 5% of unpaid taxes per month.1Internal Revenue Service. Failure to File Penalty
Ask Your Accountant for the E-File Acknowledgment
Before your return can be transmitted, you sign Form 8879, the IRS e-file Signature Authorization. That form gives your preparer written permission to send the return on your behalf.2Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 255, Signing Your Return Electronically If your accountant hasn’t asked you to sign one, your return has not been e-filed. Ask for a copy for your records.
Once the return is transmitted, the IRS sends back an electronic acknowledgment confirming whether the return was accepted or rejected. This acknowledgment is generated within 24 hours of the transmission.3Internal Revenue Service. Electronic Communication Between IRS and Transmitters During the MeF E-file Process Ask your preparer to send you a copy. An “accepted” acknowledgment is the clearest evidence that your return reached the IRS. A “rejected” acknowledgment means the IRS does not have your return, and your accountant should tell you so you can correct and resubmit.
You can also ask for the electronic postmark, a timestamp showing when the return was received by the transmitter’s system. The postmark date establishes your legal filing date: if it falls on or before the deadline, the return is considered timely even if the IRS processes it later.4Internal Revenue Service. 26 CFR Part 301 TD 8807 – Timely Mailing Treated as Timely Filing/Electronic Postmark
If Your Return Was Mailed on Paper
Some preparers still send paper returns. The equivalent proof is a U.S. Postal Service certified mail receipt. Under federal law, a certified mail receipt serves as initial evidence that your return was delivered to the IRS, and the postmark date on the receipt is treated as your filing date.5Internal Revenue Service. Memorandum Regarding USPS Delivery Confirmation and Timely Filing If the return was dropped in regular mail with no tracking, there is no reliable way to prove when, or whether, it was sent.
Check the IRS Directly
You do not have to take your accountant’s word for it. The IRS offers free tools that let you confirm your return was received.
“Where’s My Refund?”
If you are expecting a refund, this is the fastest check. Enter your Social Security number or ITIN, your filing status, and the exact whole-dollar refund amount from your return.6Internal Revenue Service. About Where’s My Refund? The tool moves through three stages: Return Received, Refund Approved, and Refund Sent. Status becomes available 24 hours after a current-year return is e-filed, or about three weeks after a paper return is mailed.7Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Refund? Reaching “Return Received” means the IRS has your return.
IRS Online Account
If you do not expect a refund, or you want a fuller picture, sign in to your IRS Online Account for Individuals. It shows your balance, payment history, key return information, and tax records by year.8Internal Revenue Service. Online Account for Individuals A processed return will appear against the relevant tax year.
Both tools require identity verification. Expect to provide a photo ID such as a driver’s license, state ID, or passport, and to complete a selfie or short video chat with an ID.me agent.9Internal Revenue Service. How to Register for IRS Online Self-Help Tools
Pull an IRS Transcript
A transcript is the most definitive confirmation, because the data comes straight from IRS records. You can view or download transcripts through your Online Account, or mail Form 4506-T (Request for Transcript of Tax Return).10Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them Digital transcripts appear immediately; paper requests take five to ten business days.
Three transcript types are useful here:
- The Tax Return Transcript shows most line items from your return as originally filed, including schedules.
- The Tax Account Transcript shows basic data like filing status and taxable income, plus any changes the IRS made after you filed.
- The Record of Account Transcript combines both into a single document.
If the system shows “No record of return filed” for the year in question, the IRS has not received or processed a return for that year.10Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them Don’t panic on day one. Transcripts for e-filed returns typically take two to three weeks to populate after submission.11Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Availability If several weeks pass and the record is still empty, follow up with your preparer.
Look at Your Bank Account
Bank activity is a useful supporting signal, though not a substitute for an IRS confirmation.
If you owed tax and authorized an electronic payment with the return, watch for an ACH debit labeled “IRS USA Tax Payment” or similar. These withdrawals can be scheduled up to 365 days after filing, though most taxpayers set them for the April deadline.12Internal Revenue Service. Pay Taxes by Electronic Funds Withdrawal
If you are due a refund by direct deposit, it usually arrives labeled “IRS” or “Internal Revenue Service.” One catch: if your preparer arranged to deduct their fees from the refund through a third-party bank, the deposit may show an unfamiliar company name instead. E-filed refunds generally arrive within about three weeks.7Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Refund?
Check Your State Return Separately
Federal acceptance does not confirm the state return. The two are separate transmissions, and it’s possible for one to go through while the other doesn’t. Most states with an income tax run their own “Check My Refund” or taxpayer portal on the revenue department’s website. You will usually need your Social Security number and either a state-specific ID number or the state refund amount. State late-filing penalties are separate from federal and vary by jurisdiction, so it pays to confirm both.
If You Discover the Return Was Never Filed
Act quickly. The failure-to-file penalty is 5% of your unpaid taxes for each month or partial month the return is late, up to a maximum of 25%. For returns due after December 31, 2025, that are more than 60 days late, the minimum penalty is $525 or 100% of the unpaid tax, whichever is less.1Internal Revenue Service. Failure to File Penalty The IRS collects these penalties from you, not from your preparer.
A few steps to take:
- File the return as soon as possible. The IRS instructs taxpayers to file all required returns whether or not they can pay in full.13Internal Revenue Service. Filing Past Due Tax Returns
- If your accountant kept your source documents, you can pull copies of your W-2s and 1099s from your IRS Online Account or by filing Form 4506-T.
- Ask about First Time Abate relief. If you filed on time and had no penalties in the prior three tax years, you may qualify to have the late-filing penalty waived.14Internal Revenue Service. Administrative Penalty Relief
- If the return has gone unfiled long enough, the IRS may have prepared a substitute return using income data from employers and banks. That substitute won’t include your deductions or credits, so filing your own return replaces it.13Internal Revenue Service. Filing Past Due Tax Returns
If the preparer took your money and either failed to file or filed a fraudulent return, you can report them to the IRS using Form 14157 (Complaint: Tax Return Preparer). When your return or refund was directly affected, add Form 14157-A (Tax Return Preparer Fraud or Misconduct Affidavit).15Internal Revenue Service. Make a Complaint About a Tax Return Preparer Complaints about federal tax matters older than three years are generally not actionable.
