To find out if you have a Direct student loan, log into your account at StudentAid.gov and read the name next to each loan on your dashboard. If the name starts with “Direct” — Direct Subsidized, Direct Unsubsidized, Direct PLUS, or Direct Consolidation — that loan was issued under the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program, and the U.S. Department of Education is your lender.1Federal Student Aid. Volume 8 The Direct Loan Program Any other prefix means you have a different kind of federal loan.
The label matters because major relief programs are limited to Direct Loans. Public Service Loan Forgiveness only counts non-defaulted Direct Loans, and most income-driven repayment plans — PAYE, the newer version of IBR, and ICR — are restricted to Direct Loan borrowers as well.2Federal Student Aid. Where to Look on StudentAid.gov
You’ll need a Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID to sign in. If you filed a FAFSA, you already have one. If not, create it at StudentAid.gov/fsa-id using your Social Security number, legal name, and date of birth.3Federal Student Aid. Creating and Using the FSA ID

The Four Direct Loan Names
Federal law authorizes four Direct Loan types, and each appears on your dashboard with a consistent prefix:6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 20 USC 1087e – Terms and Conditions of Loans
- Direct Subsidized Loans, made to undergraduates with financial need; the government covers interest during enrollment and the grace period.7Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Is a Federal Direct Loan
- Direct Unsubsidized Loans, available to undergraduates and graduate students regardless of need; interest accrues from disbursement.
- Direct PLUS Loans, made to parents of undergraduates and to graduate or professional students, with a credit check and higher rates.
- Direct Consolidation Loans, which combine multiple federal loans into one. A consolidation loan is itself a Direct Loan.
If the word “Direct” leads the loan name, you have your answer.
What FFEL and Perkins Labels Look Like
A loan that starts with “FFEL” belongs to the Federal Family Education Loan Program.5Federal Student Aid. What to Know About Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program Loans FFEL loans were originally funded by private lenders and guaranteed by the government, unlike Direct Loans, which come from the Department of Education itself.8Federal Student Aid. Introduction – FSA Partner Connect No new FFEL loans have been issued since 2010, but many borrowers still carry them.
Ownership of an FFEL loan matters for program eligibility. Some are now held by the Department of Education; others remain with commercial lenders or guaranty agencies. To check, look at “My Loan Servicers” on your dashboard. A servicer name starting with “ED” means the Department of Education owns that loan. A name without the “ED” prefix means a commercial holder still owns it.5Federal Student Aid. What to Know About Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program Loans
Perkins Loans are separate again. They were funded through individual colleges, and no new Perkins Loans have been issued since September 30, 2017.9Federal Student Aid. Participating in the Perkins Loan Program An outstanding Perkins Loan will not carry the “Direct” label.
A Second Check Through Your Servicer
If the dashboard leaves you unsure, your billing statement is a second reference point. Direct Loans include the word “Direct” in the account name on statements. When the paperwork is ambiguous, call the servicer listed on StudentAid.gov and ask directly: does the federal government own this loan, and under which program was it issued?
Servicer assignments change. The Department of Education periodically moves accounts between companies, so the servicer sending your bill this year may not be the one you had two years ago. Your loan type does not change with a transfer. A Direct Loan stays a Direct Loan regardless of which company handles the billing.
If Your Check Shows FFEL or Perkins Loans
Having a non-Direct loan does not lock you out permanently. A Direct Consolidation Loan combines your existing federal loans into a single new Direct Loan, and the application does not require a credit check.10Federal Student Aid. Direct Consolidation Loan Application and Promissory Note You can apply on StudentAid.gov or on paper. Once consolidated, FFEL and Perkins Loans become eligible for PSLF and most income-driven repayment plans.2Federal Student Aid. Which Types of Federal Student Loans Qualify for Public Service Loan Forgiveness
Weigh the tradeoffs first. Consolidation resets the clock on any qualifying payments already made toward income-driven repayment forgiveness. It can also cost you borrower benefits attached to the original loans, such as interest rate discounts or principal rebates on FFEL loans. If your loans are already all Direct Loans, consolidation usually offers no benefit beyond combining multiple payments into one.
Once a consolidation loan is funded, repayment begins 30 days later. Keep paying on your original loans until you receive written confirmation the consolidation is complete; stopping early can push the old accounts into delinquency.
If a Loan Is in Default
A red warning appears on your StudentAid.gov dashboard when any loan is in default.11Federal Student Aid. Student Loan Default and Collections FAQs Default changes the picture: a defaulted loan does not qualify for PSLF even if it is a Direct Loan, and it generally cannot be consolidated without first completing a rehabilitation agreement or making specific arrangements.2Federal Student Aid. Which Types of Federal Student Loans Qualify for Public Service Loan Forgiveness If you see that warning, resolve default status before making decisions about loan type or repayment plans. Your servicer or the Department of Education’s Default Resolution Group can explain the options available in your situation.
