Getting the Form from a State Marketplace

Not everyone uses HealthCare.gov. For plan year 2026, 21 states and the District of Columbia run their own marketplace portals with separate websites and logins:7Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. State-based Exchanges California, Colorado, Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington.

Arkansas and Oregon operate state-based exchanges that sit on the federal platform, so some functions still route through HealthCare.gov.7Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. State-based Exchanges If you’re in one of those two states, start by trying HealthCare.gov.

For the other state exchanges, sign in to your state’s marketplace site and look for a “Tax Documents” or “Tax Forms” section inside your account dashboard. Select the tax year, click the 1095-A link, and save the PDF. Replacements or corrections have to go through the state exchange itself, not the federal call center. The IRS maintains a list of marketplace contacts if you need one.8Internal Revenue Service. Corrected, Incorrect or Voided Form 1095-A

If You Can’t Log In or Verify Your Identity

Some users hit a wall before they ever reach their tax documents. The marketplace uses Experian, a credit reporting company, to confirm your identity by asking questions drawn from your credit history. If enough answers match, you’re in.9CMS. Verifying Your Identity in the Marketplace

If online verification fails, you have two ways to resolve it. Call the Experian Help Desk at 1-866-578-5409 with the reference code shown on your screen, or upload copies of identity documents (a driver’s license, Social Security card, or birth certificate) through your HealthCare.gov account. Mailing documents also works, though uploads move faster; mailed documents typically take 7 to 10 business days.9CMS. Verifying Your Identity in the Marketplace You can’t reach your online account or download tax forms until verification is complete, so don’t leave this until April.

Missing Form or Wrong Information

A wrong address is one of the most common reasons a mailed form never arrives. Keep your marketplace profile current throughout the year. If the paper copy hasn’t come by mid-February and nothing is in your online account, call the Marketplace Call Center at 1-800-318-2596 for a replacement, or contact your state exchange if you enrolled through one.

If the form arrives but the numbers don’t match your records (wrong premium amounts, incorrect months of coverage, wrong household members), you need a corrected version. Call the Marketplace Call Center to report the discrepancy, and the representative will document the errors and submit a correction request.8Internal Revenue Service. Corrected, Incorrect or Voided Form 1095-A Corrections involving financial figures can take several weeks because the marketplace has to verify the change against enrollment records. When the corrected form is ready, it appears in your online account and you may get an email or mailed notice. If it arrives after you’ve already filed, you may need to file an amended return.4Internal Revenue Service. Health Insurance Marketplace Statements

One exception saves a call: if the only errors are demographic details like a misspelled name or wrong address, just enter the correct information when you file. No corrected form is needed.10CMS: Agent and Brokers FAQ. How Can I Help My Clients Make Corrections to Their Form 1095-A

Using the Form on Your Tax Return

Getting the form is only half the job. If any advance premium tax credit was paid on your behalf, you must file Form 8962 (Premium Tax Credit) with your federal return, even if your income is low enough that you wouldn’t otherwise have to file.11IRS. 2025 Instructions for Form 8962 – Premium Tax Credit Form 8962 pulls the monthly enrollment premium, the benchmark silver plan cost, and the advance credits paid straight from your 1095-A, then compares those numbers against your actual income for the year. Depending on how the estimate compared to reality, you’ll either owe some of the credit back, receive an additional credit, or come out even.

Skipping this step has real consequences. If you don’t file Form 8962, the IRS will send Letter 12C asking you to complete the reconciliation, and any refund you’re owed sits in limbo, typically an additional 6 to 8 weeks after the IRS receives your completed form. The bigger consequence hits the following year: if you fail to reconcile, you lose eligibility for advance premium tax credits and cost-sharing reductions for the next calendar year.12Internal Revenue Service. Reconciling Your Advance Payments of the Premium Tax Credit For most households that rely on subsidies, losing them and paying the full premium out of pocket is far worse than any repayment amount on Form 8962.

Shared Policies Across Multiple Tax Filers

When more than one tax filer is covered under the same marketplace policy, each filer should get a separate 1095-A that reflects only the members of their own tax family. The marketplace splits the enrollment premiums, benchmark silver plan costs, and advance credit payments across the forms.13Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1095-A This most often affects divorced parents sharing a policy for their children, or adult children who were on a parent’s marketplace plan but file their own return. If the allocation looks wrong, or if you received one form when you expected separate ones, contact the marketplace before filing. Form 8962 only works when the premium amounts are properly attributed to your tax family.
