How Do I Get My 1099-G From Unemployment Online?

To get your 1099-G from unemployment online, log into the same state unemployment portal you used to file or certify your claim, open the tax documents or 1099-G section, choose the correct tax year, and download the PDF. States must post the form no later than January 31 for benefits paid the prior calendar year.1Internal Revenue Service. General Instructions for Certain Information Returns (2025) You need it because unemployment compensation is taxable income under federal law, and the numbers on the form flow directly onto your return.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 85 – Unemployment Compensation

What You Need Before You Sign In

Two things: your Social Security number and the username and password you set up when you first filed your claim. Every state runs its own unemployment website, so the buttons and menus differ, but the pattern is the same everywhere. Sign in, find the tax documents area, download.

Never created an online account? That happens if you applied by phone or got paper checks. You’ll need to register first, and the portal will run you through identity verification that may ask for your date of birth, mailing address, or details from a recent payment. Before you type anything sensitive, check that the web address ends in .gov. Look-alike sites harvest credentials from people searching for their tax forms in January.

Forgotten login? Use the “forgot username” or “forgot password” link on the sign-in page. Most states send a reset link by email or text, or walk you through security questions. Sort this out early. The federal filing deadline is April 15, 2026, and the state portals get busy as it approaches.3Internal Revenue Service. IRS Announces First Day of 2026 Filing Season

Finding and Downloading the Form

Once you’re in, look for a link labeled “Tax Information,” “1099-G,” “Tax Documents,” or “Payment History.” Select the correct tax year. For a return you file in 2026, that’s tax year 2025. The portal generates a PDF you can view, save, or print.

Two boxes on the form matter most. Box 1 is the total unemployment compensation paid to you during the year. Box 4 is any federal income tax that was withheld from those payments.4Internal Revenue Service. Form 1099-G (Rev. March 2024) Certain Government Payments The Box 1 amount goes on Line 7 of Schedule 1 (Form 1040). The Box 4 amount goes on your return as tax already paid.5Internal Revenue Service. Save your own copy to your computer or cloud storage, don’t rely on the portal to keep it available. The IRS recommends holding tax records at least three years from your filing date.6Internal Revenue Service. How Long Should I Keep Records

If the State Portal Won’t Work

State agencies sometimes take their sites down for maintenance, and account lockouts happen. You have backups.

Most state unemployment agencies run an automated phone line that lets you request a paper 1099-G by mail. The number is usually on the agency’s website or on any letter it has sent you.

You can also pull the same figures from the IRS. Sign in to your Individual Online Account at irs.gov and open the transcripts section. A Wage and Income Transcript shows every information return filed under your Social Security number, including your state’s 1099-G report.7Internal Revenue Service. If the Form Is Wrong or You Never Filed a Claim

Compare Box 1 against what you actually received. If the number is too high, call your state unemployment agency and ask for a corrected 1099-G. If a 1099-G shows up for benefits you never received or applied for, someone likely filed a fraudulent claim using your identity.9Internal Revenue Service. Identity Theft and Unemployment Benefits

Report the fraud to the state that issued the form. The U.S. Department of Labor keeps a directory of state contacts and online fraud-reporting links.10U.S. Department of Labor. Report Unemployment Identity Fraud Once you report it, the state should issue a corrected 1099-G and update its records with the IRS.

File your return based on what you actually received, not the incorrect amount on the original form.11Internal Revenue Service. How to File When Taxpayers Have Incorrect or Missing Documents Keep any confirmation numbers from your fraud report in case the IRS later asks about the mismatch. A fraudulent 1099-G by itself does not require you to file Form 14039 with the IRS. You’d only need that form if your e-filed return is rejected because someone already filed under your Social Security number, or if the IRS specifically instructs you to submit one.9Internal Revenue Service. Identity Theft and Unemployment Benefits

Ignoring the mismatch is risky either way. Reporting nothing when the IRS has a 1099-G on file usually triggers a notice, and underreporting income can carry an accuracy-related penalty of 20 percent of the underpayment.12Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6662 – Imposition of Accuracy-Related Penalty on Underpayments

Set Up Withholding for Next Year

If a surprise tax bill is what sent you looking for your 1099-G, you can prevent a repeat. Submit IRS Form W-4V (Voluntary Withholding Request) to your state unemployment agency, and it will withhold 10 percent from each benefit payment. Ten percent is the only rate the IRS allows for unemployment; you can’t pick a different figure.13Internal Revenue Service. Form W-4V (Rev. January 2026) – Voluntary Withholding Request

If your overall tax rate is higher than 10 percent once you factor in other income, cover the gap with estimated tax payments during the year. Whatever gets withheld shows up in Box 4 of next year’s 1099-G and reduces what you owe when you file.
