If you need another copy of your paid 2290 Schedule 1, the fastest route is to log back into the e-file provider you used and download it from your filing history. If you paper-filed, no longer have access to that provider, or the provider is out of business, the IRS itself can give you the record: by phone through the Business and Specialty Tax Line, by mail or fax using Form 4506-T, or in person at a Taxpayer Assistance Center. The stamped Schedule 1 is your proof that you paid the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax (or reported a suspension), and most state DMVs will not register a heavy vehicle without it.
What to Have Ready Before You Ask
Every retrieval method depends on the IRS matching your request to the original return. Pull these details together first:
- The Employer Identification Number used on the original Form 2290. A mismatch here will block the request.
- The tax period. The HVUT year runs July 1 through June 30, and the current period covers July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2026. Know which year’s Schedule 1 you need.1Internal Revenue Service. Key Filing Deadlines for the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax
- The Vehicle Identification Number for each truck. One transposed digit and the copy will not match what the state expects.
- The business name and address exactly as they appeared on the filing. If either has changed since, expect additional verification.
Download It From Your E-File Provider
Try this first. Authorized e-file transmitters store your stamped Schedule 1 electronically and typically keep those records available for several years. Sign in to the provider’s site, open your filing history or completed returns, and locate the Schedule 1 for the tax period you need. It usually downloads as a PDF with the IRS electronic watermark printed across it.
If it isn’t in your account, contact the provider’s support team and ask them to resend it. Many will email a fresh watermarked copy the same business day. One note on appearance: the IRS changed the placement of the e-file watermark on Schedule 1 prior to July 2025, so a recently downloaded copy may look different from older ones you have on file.2International Registration Plan, Inc. Request a Record From the IRS
When the provider path isn’t available, go directly to the IRS. There is no fee for tax transcripts.3Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them
By Phone
Call the IRS Business and Specialty Tax Line and ask a representative to look up your Form 2290 filing.4Internal Revenue Service. Telephone Assistance Contacts for Business Customers Once identity is verified and the record located, the representative may be able to fax a copy of the stamped Schedule 1 directly to your business, often within 24 hours. Expect long hold times during peak season in August and September, when millions of 2290 returns arrive at once.
By Mail or Fax Using Form 4506-T
Form 4506-T (Request for Transcript of Tax Return) is the formal written method.5Internal Revenue Service. About Form 4506-T Fill in your EIN, business name, address, and the tax period, then mail or fax it to the processing center listed in the form’s instructions. A transcript is a summary of your filing data rather than a photocopy of the original stamped Schedule 1, but in most cases the transcript carries enough information to serve as proof of payment. Delivery by mail can take several weeks, so start early if you have a registration deadline coming up.
Who Can Actually Request It
Federal confidentiality rules restrict who can access return information.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6103 – Confidentiality and Disclosure of Returns and Return Information Only the taxpayer, a person listed on the return as a third-party designee, or someone with a valid power of attorney (Form 2848) can request the records. A dispatcher, spouse, or accountant without one of those roles on file will not be able to obtain the copy on your behalf.
Get a Same-Day Stamped Copy at a Taxpayer Assistance Center
If you need a physical stamped document today and the phone line isn’t producing one, an in-person visit to a Taxpayer Assistance Center is your best option. All TACs operate by appointment only. Call 844-545-5640 to schedule.7Internal Revenue Service. Here’s What Taxpayers Should Know Before Visiting an IRS Office
Bring a valid government-issued photo ID. If you are not the business owner listed on the return, bring authorization paperwork as well. An officer or responsible party can appear with their ID and the EIN. An employee or outside representative typically needs a completed Form 2848 (Power of Attorney) or Form 8821 (Tax Information Authorization) already on file with the IRS before the appointment.8Internal Revenue Service. Power of Attorney and Other Authorizations Without proper authorization, the agent cannot release the records.
Once identity is verified, the agent can pull the electronic record and print a stamped Schedule 1 on the spot. This is the only retrieval method that reliably produces a document the same day.
If the Copy Has the Wrong VIN
A stamped Schedule 1 with a bad VIN is essentially useless at the DMV, and this is one of the most common filing errors. To fix it, submit a corrected Form 2290 for the same tax period. Check the VIN Correction box, list the corrected VIN on the new Schedule 1, and attach a brief written explanation of the error.9Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 2290 No additional tax is owed for a VIN correction alone. The IRS will process the corrected filing and issue a new stamped Schedule 1 with the right number.
Do not use the VIN correction process for anything else. Adding a vehicle or reporting a change in weight category requires a different type of amended filing.
Suspended Vehicles Get a Stamped Schedule 1 Too
If your vehicle qualifies for a tax suspension because it travels 5,000 miles or fewer on public highways during the tax period (7,500 for agricultural vehicles), you still had to file Form 2290 and list that vehicle on Schedule 1 as a Category W suspended vehicle.9Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 2290 The IRS stamps and returns that Schedule 1 the same way it does for taxable vehicles, and you can retrieve a copy through any of the methods above. Your state DMV will require it.
If a suspended vehicle later exceeds the mileage limit, the tax becomes due immediately, and you must file an amended Form 2290 and Schedule 1 by the last day of the month following the month the limit was exceeded.9Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 2290 That amended filing generates a new stamped Schedule 1 reflecting the tax owed, which becomes the copy you keep and present.
