How Do I Get a Copy of My 1099-INT From the IRS?

The IRS does not keep a copy of your actual 1099-INT, but it does store the interest data your bank reported on it. To get a copy of your 1099-INT information from the IRS, request a Wage and Income Transcript, which lists every 1099, W-2, and similar information return filed under your Social Security number for a given tax year. Before going that route, though, call the bank. A reissued form from the payer is almost always faster than anything the IRS can produce.

Ask the Bank for a Replacement First

Most banks and financial institutions can reissue a 1099-INT within a few days, and the replacement is identical to the original. This is the step people skip most often, and it saves real time.1Internal Revenue Service. What to Do When a W-2 or Form 1099 Is Missing or Incorrect

If the payer can’t help, no longer exists, or simply won’t respond, and you still haven’t received the form by the end of February, call the IRS at 800-829-1040. An agent will contact the payer for you. Have the payer’s name, address, and phone number ready.1Internal Revenue Service. What to Do When a W-2 or Form 1099 Is Missing or Incorrect

What the IRS Can Actually Give You

The IRS does not send out photocopies of 1099-INTs. What it offers is a Wage and Income Transcript, a document that pulls together the data from every information return filed on your behalf for a tax year, including W-2s, 1098s, 1099s, and 5498s. For a missing 1099-INT, the transcript shows the payer’s name and the total interest paid.2Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them

Dollar amounts on the transcript appear in full, but personal information is partially hidden. Your SSN shows only the last four digits, the payer’s EIN shows only its last four, and names and addresses are truncated. When you need the unmasked version for tax preparation, sign in to your IRS online account to view it in full.3Internal Revenue Service. About Tax Transcripts

One warning: the IRS offers five transcript types, and only the Wage and Income Transcript contains 1099 data. The Tax Return Transcript, Tax Account Transcript, Record of Account, and Verification of Non-Filing Letter will not show you interest income figures.2Internal Revenue Service. When the Data Becomes Available

Current-year wage and income information generally does not appear on the transcript until the first week of February, once payers begin filing. If you check earlier and see nothing, the data has not loaded yet.2Internal Revenue Service. Document Limits

The online transcript system caps out at roughly 85 income documents per tax year. If you have more than that, the transcript won’t generate online, and you’ll be told to submit Form 4506-T by mail.2Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them

Getting the Transcript Online

The online route is fastest. Sign in to your Individual Online Account at irs.gov, open the Tax Records page, and click the transcripts link. Select Wage and Income Transcript, choose the tax year, and the document opens right away for saving or printing.4Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Services for Individuals – FAQs

If you’re using the numbers to prepare a return, look at the lines that correspond to the 1099-INT boxes, particularly the interest income figure. Report that amount on Schedule B of your Form 1040 if your total interest exceeds $1,500.

Setting Up an IRS Online Account

If you don’t already have an account, you’ll create one through ID.me, the identity service the IRS uses. You’ll need a government-issued photo ID such as a driver’s license, state ID, or passport, plus either a selfie or a live video chat with an agent. Budget 15 to 30 minutes for the initial setup; every future visit uses the same login.5Internal Revenue Service. How to Register for IRS Online Self-Help Tools

Getting the Transcript by Phone or Mail

Two offline options are available if you’d rather skip the online account.

The automated phone line at 800-908-9946 walks you through identity verification and mails the transcript to the address the IRS has on file. Delivery runs 5 to 10 calendar days.6Internal Revenue Service. Get Your Tax Records and Transcripts

You can also submit Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return, and check the box on line 8, which specifically requests wage and income data including the 1099 series. Mail or fax it to the IRS processing center for your area, listed in the form’s instructions. Most requests are processed within 10 business days.7Internal Revenue Service. Both offline methods share one catch: the transcript goes to the address the IRS currently has for you. If you’ve moved and haven’t updated your address, file Form 8822 first, or use the online account instead, which lets you view the document immediately regardless of your mailing address.4Internal Revenue Service. In-Person Help

If online verification is failing and you need the data quickly, you can visit a local IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center. Appointments are required. Bring a current government-issued photo ID, a second form of identification such as a Social Security card or utility bill, and your taxpayer identification number.8Internal Revenue Service. You Still Have to Report the Interest

A missing 1099-INT does not excuse you from reporting the income. All taxable interest belongs on your federal return whether or not you received a form. Banks are required to issue a 1099-INT only when they pay $10 or more in interest during the year, but smaller amounts remain taxable and must be reported.9Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 403, Interest Received

If the amount is small enough to pull from your bank statements or online banking records, you don’t necessarily need the transcript. Just report the interest. The transcript becomes essential when you have multiple accounts, closed an account, or genuinely don’t know how much interest was paid.

If the Reported Amount Looks Wrong

Sometimes the transcript figures don’t match your records. Start with the bank. Financial institutions are required to file a corrected information return when the original contains errors, marking it “CORRECTED” and sending it to both the IRS and you.10Internal Revenue Service. General Instructions for Certain Information Returns (2025)

There’s a narrow exception. If the discrepancy is $100 or less, the bank isn’t required to issue a correction unless you specifically ask for one. When you do ask, the bank must comply regardless of the amount.10Internal Revenue Service. General Instructions for Certain Information Returns (2025)

If the bank refuses to correct the form and you’re confident your number is right, file with the accurate figure and attach Form 8275, Disclosure Statement, explaining the discrepancy. Filing an amount that doesn’t match the IRS record will trigger an automated mismatch notice, but the disclosure helps protect you from an accuracy-related penalty, which can run 20% of the underpayment.11Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 6662 – Imposition of Accuracy-Related Penalty on Underpayments

Filing When the Form Is Late or Missing

Don’t let a missing form push you past the deadline. The IRS is explicit: file on time even if documents are still outstanding.1Internal Revenue Service. What to Do When a W-2 or Form 1099 Is Missing or Incorrect Estimate the interest from bank statements or online records, file by April 15, 2026, and correct the amount later with Form 1040-X if it turns out to be off.

If you truly can’t estimate and need more time, file Form 4868 before the April deadline for an automatic six-month extension, pushing your filing date to October 15, 2026. The extension covers filing, not payment. Interest accrues on any unpaid balance starting April 16, so pay what you can with the extension request to hold down what you’ll owe later.12Internal Revenue Service.
