How Do I Get 1040 Forms From Previous Years?

To get 1040 forms from previous years, start with the IRS Get Transcript Online tool: it’s free, immediate, and covers the current year plus the three prior processing years. If you need an exact copy of the return you actually filed, submit Form 4506 with a $30 fee per year and expect up to 75 calendar days. Which route fits depends on what the person asking for the return will accept, and how far back you’re reaching.

Do You Need a Transcript or a Full Copy?

Most people asking for an old 1040 don’t really need the return itself. They need a transcript, which is a summary of what was on the return. Transcripts are free. Full copies cost money and take months. That single decision drives everything else.

A tax return transcript shows most line items from your original 1040 and its attached schedules and forms, as filed. It doesn’t show later changes, like an amended return. Mortgage lenders almost always accept a transcript. So do most student loan servicers and government agencies.1Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them

A full copy is the actual document you submitted, every page and every attachment. The IRS keeps full copies for the current year and up to seven prior years.2Internal Revenue Service. Taxpayers Can Request a Copy of Previous Tax Returns You mostly need one for a legal proceeding, a court order, or a situation where only the signed document will do. Otherwise, ask the requester whether a transcript is acceptable before spending $30 and waiting.

Picking the Right Transcript

The IRS offers several transcript types, and choosing correctly the first time saves a second request:

  • Tax Return Transcript — line items from your original return, current year and three prior processing years. This is what lenders typically want.
  • Tax Account Transcript — changes made after filing, including amendments or IRS adjustments.
  • Record of Account Transcript — combines the return and account transcripts. Current year plus three prior years.
  • Wage and Income Transcript — data from W-2s, 1099s, 1098s, and similar information returns. Available for up to ten years, which helps when you need income proof further back than a return transcript reaches.3Internal Revenue Service. • Verification of Non-Filing Letter — confirms you didn’t file for a given year, often required for financial aid or public assistance.

How to Get a Transcript

Three delivery methods, three very different timelines.

Online, Same Day

Get Transcript Online lets you view and download transcripts as soon as you sign in. You’ll need an IRS Online Account, which requires identity verification through ID.me. That means uploading a photo of a government-issued ID (driver’s license, state ID, or passport) and taking a selfie with a smartphone or webcam.4Internal Revenue Service. New Identity Verification Process to Access Certain IRS Online Tools and Services If you already have an ID.me account through another agency, those credentials work here too.

This is the right choice for a mortgage application, a landlord’s income check, or your own recordkeeping.

By Phone or Mail, About a Week or Two

If you can’t finish the online verification, call the IRS automated line at 800-908-9946 and request a mailed transcript. You can also mail Form 4506-T. Either way, expect 5 to 10 calendar days for delivery to the address the IRS has on file.5Internal Revenue Service. Get Your Tax Records and Transcripts A phone request can’t be redirected to a different address. Form 4506-T can, and it also lets you designate a third party to receive the transcript. Return transcripts requested this way are processed within 10 business days.6Internal Revenue Service. Form 4506-T Request for Transcript of Tax Return

How to Get a Full Copy of Your Return

When you actually need the return itself, file Form 4506. Each copy costs $30, and the payment has to be included with the request or the IRS will reject it. Pay by check or money order made out to “United States Treasury,” and write your SSN and “Form 4506 request” on the payment.7Internal Revenue Service. Request for Copy of Tax Return

Mail the completed form and payment to the IRS processing center for your region. The country is split across three mailing addresses based on where you lived when you filed the return you’re asking for; those addresses appear on the IRS website and on Form 4506 itself.8Internal Revenue Service. Processing takes up to 75 calendar days. Plan around that if there’s a deadline.7Internal Revenue Service. What to Have Ready

Whether you’re filing Form 4506 or Form 4506-T, gather the following before you start:

  • Your SSN or ITIN, matching IRS records exactly.
  • The filing status used for the year in question.
  • The mailing address on your most recent return. If your address has changed and you haven’t updated it, the IRS may not be able to match your request.
  • The specific tax years you need.
  • A signature that matches what the IRS has on file.

For joint returns, Form 4506-T needs only one spouse’s signature, and the transcript can go to either spouse.6Internal Revenue Service. Form 4506-T Request for Transcript of Tax Return A representative signing for you needs specific delegation authority on Form 2848 (Power of Attorney) attached to the request. Try Your Tax Software or Preparer First

Before going to the IRS at all, check whether you already have access. Platforms like TurboTax and H&R Block store returns filed through their software for several years in your online account. You’ll need the login credentials you used at filing. Some services charge a small fee to retrieve returns from inactive accounts, but retrieval is usually instant.

If a CPA or professional preparer handled your taxes, call them. Federal regulations require preparers to keep copies or lists of returns they prepared for at least three years after the close of the return period.10eCFR. 26 CFR 1.6107-1 – Tax Return Preparer Must Furnish Copy of Return Many keep them longer. One email can save weeks.

When the Records Are Too Old for the IRS

If you need income proof going further back than the IRS will provide, the Social Security Administration can help. The SSA can produce copies or printouts of your W-2 forms for any year from 1978 forward. If the request relates to a Social Security matter, the copies are free. For anything else — filing a return, proving income for a loan — the fee is $62 per request.11Social Security Administration. How Can I Get a Copy of My Wage and Tax Statements (Form W-2)?

To request by mail, include your SSN, the exact name on your Social Security card, the years you need, and the reason for the request. Pay by check or money order payable to the Social Security Administration and send everything to the Office of Earnings and International Operations in Baltimore. If you don’t state a reason, the SSA charges the $62 non-program fee by default.

SSA records won’t replace a full 1040. When income proof from decades back is the only thing available, though, this is often the only source left.

Requesting Records for a Deceased Taxpayer

An executor, administrator, or heir can request a deceased person’s returns, but the IRS needs proof of legal authority. Along with Form 4506, provide:

  • A copy of the death certificate (not the original).
  • Letters Testamentary from the probate court, or Letters of Administration if the person died without a will.
  • Form 56, Notice Concerning Fiduciary Relationship, with the Letters attached.

You’ll also need the deceased person’s full name, last known address, and Social Security number.12Internal Revenue Service. Request Deceased Person’s Information The $30 per-return fee still applies.13Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 56 Notice Concerning Fiduciary Relationship

Fee Waiver for Disaster Victims

If your home, business, or tax records sat in a federally declared disaster area, the IRS waives the copy fee and expedites processing. Write the disaster name across the top of Form 4506 when you submit it — for example, “Hurricane Helene” or whatever the official designation is. Note on the form that the request is disaster-related, and identify the state and event type.14Internal Revenue Service. IRS Offers Tax Relief After Major Disasters This applies when you need replacement copies to file amended returns or claim disaster-related losses.

State Returns Are a Separate Request

Everything above covers your federal 1040 only. State income tax returns come from your state’s revenue or taxation agency, on its own forms, at its own fees. Retention periods generally run three to seven years, and fees for certified copies vary. Check your state agency’s website for the specific procedure.
