To claim a workplace pension, contact your pension provider or scheme administrator, ask for a retirement claim pack, complete the benefit claim form with your personal details, chosen payout method, and bank details, and return it with proof of identity. You can normally access the money from age 55 (rising to 57 from 6 April 2028), and up to 25% of the pot can usually be taken tax-free, capped at £268,275 across all your pensions. The exact process depends on whether your scheme is defined benefit or defined contribution, so that is the first thing to pin down.
Work Out Which Type of Scheme You Have
Workplace pensions split into two families, and the paperwork differs.
A defined benefit (DB) scheme, sometimes called final salary or career average, pays a guaranteed income based on your salary and years of service. The scheme calculates what you get using a set formula, so there is nothing to choose about investments or withdrawals. You write to the administrator, confirm you want to start drawing, and they tell you your annual figure. Most DB schemes have a normal retirement age written into the rules; taking benefits earlier usually means a reduced payout.
A defined contribution (DC) scheme, which covers most auto-enrolment pensions, builds a pot from your contributions, your employer’s contributions, and investment returns. The pot is yours, and you decide how to withdraw it using the pension freedoms introduced in 2015. That is where the real decisions sit, so most of what follows is aimed at DC members. If you are in a DB scheme, your administrator will walk you through the narrower set of options.
When You Can Access the Money
The normal minimum pension age is 55. From 6 April 2028 it rises to 57.1HM Revenue & Customs. PTM062100 – Member Benefits: Pensions: Pension Age Anything taken earlier is treated as an unauthorised payment and attracts severe tax charges. A small number of people hold a “protected pension age” under older scheme rules that lets them access their fund sooner, but the conditions are strict.2HM Revenue & Customs. PTM062205 – Member Benefits: Pensions: Protected Pension Age: Basic Principles
The minimum pension age is a separate thing from the State Pension age. You do not need to wait until State Pension age to claim your workplace pension, and you do not have to claim both at once.
Check your scheme’s own normal retirement date too. Some occupational schemes set it at 60 or 65, and taking benefits before that point can shrink the amount you receive.
If You Are Seriously Ill
A diagnosis of terminal illness with a life expectancy under 12 months usually lets you take the entire pension as a cash lump sum at any age. Under 75, that lump sum is tax-free up to the lump sum and death benefit allowance of £1,073,100. At 75 or over, it is taxed as income.3MoneyHelper. Ill-Health Retirement: Take Your Pension Early You will need written certification from a medical practitioner. Contact your scheme administrator directly to start the serious ill-health lump sum process.
Documents to Have Ready
Before you call the provider, pull these together:
- National Insurance number, which is the main identifier linking you to your pension and tax records.4GOV.UK. National Insurance: Introduction
- Pension member reference or policy number, found on your annual benefit statement or scheme correspondence.
- Government-issued photo ID, such as a passport or driving licence, for identity verification.
- Proof of address, typically a utility bill or bank statement from the last three months.
- Bank account number and sort code for the account that should receive payment.
If You Have Lost Track of an Old Scheme
After several job changes, you may have pensions with providers you can no longer remember. The Pension Tracing Service, run by the Department for Work and Pensions, holds a free database of over 320,000 schemes. You enter the former employer’s name and get back contact details for the scheme they used.5GOV.UK. New Pension Tracing Service Website Launched It will not confirm whether you have a pension or what it is worth, but it points you to the right provider so you can ask them directly.
Decide How You Want to Be Paid
DC pension freedoms give you four routes from the minimum pension age, and you can mix them.
The 25% Tax-Free Lump Sum
You can usually take up to 25% of the pot as a tax-free cash lump sum, known formally as a pension commencement lump sum. The most you can take tax-free across all your pensions is £268,275, called the lump sum allowance.6GOV.UK. Tax on Your Private Pension Contributions: Lump Sum Allowance This replaced the old lifetime allowance, which was abolished on 6 April 2024. Anything over £268,275 is taxed as income.
The 25% is calculated on the value of the fund being accessed at that time.7HM Revenue & Customs. Pension Commencement Lump Sum (PCLS): Applicable Amount You do not have to take it in one hit. Under drawdown, you can take smaller tax-free slices over time, as long as the running total stays inside your allowance.
Annuity
An annuity converts part or all of the remaining pot into a guaranteed income for life, paid by an insurance company. Once bought, you cannot unwind it, so the decision deserves care. You can shop around rather than accept whatever your pension provider quotes. Smokers, people with certain health conditions, and residents of some parts of the country may qualify for an enhanced annuity paying noticeably more.
Flexi-Access Drawdown
Drawdown keeps your pension invested while you withdraw income when you need it. The pot can grow but can also fall, so income is not guaranteed. Anything you withdraw beyond the 25% tax-free portion is taxed at your marginal rate.
Watch one side effect closely. Once you take taxable income through drawdown, your annual allowance for further pension contributions drops from £60,000 to £10,000. That reduced limit is called the money purchase annual allowance.8GOV.UK. Pension Schemes Rates If you are still working and your employer is paying into a pension for you, triggering the MPAA can sharply limit what you can save from that point on.
Taking the Whole Pot as Cash
You can withdraw everything at once. The first 25% is tax-free (within the lump sum allowance) and the other 75% is added to your taxable income for that year. On a large pot this can push you into higher tax brackets and produce a much bigger bill than spreading withdrawals over several tax years.
Tax on What You Withdraw
Beyond the 25% tax-free portion, every pound you take from a DC pension is taxed as earned income through PAYE. Your provider needs a tax code to deduct the right amount. If you are still working, HMRC supplies the code. If you have recently left a job, hand over your P45 so the provider applies the correct one.9GOV.UK. Paying a Company Pension or Annuity Through Your Payroll
Emergency Tax and How to Get It Back
If the provider does not hold your correct code when it processes a first withdrawal, HMRC rules require an emergency tax code. That code usually assumes you will receive the same amount every month for the rest of the year, which overstates your income and takes far too much tax, particularly on a one-off lump sum.
You can reclaim the overpayment before the tax year ends. HMRC has three forms:
- P55 if you have taken a flexible withdrawal, have not emptied the pot, and will not take further payments before the tax year ends.
- P53Z if you have withdrawn your entire pension.
- P50Z if you have withdrawn your entire pension and also stopped working.
HMRC pays refunds by Faster Payments once the claim is reviewed.10GOV.UK. Claim Back Tax on a Flexibly Accessed Pension Overpayment (P55) Filing promptly can bring your money back in weeks rather than months.
Submitting the Claim
Once you know how you want to be paid, the submission itself is straightforward. Most modern providers accept the claim form through a secure online member portal. Some older occupational schemes still send paper packs by post. Ask your provider for a retirement claim pack if you cannot find one online.
The form asks for your personal details, your chosen payout method, your bank details, and your beneficiary nominations. Check every field. An incorrect sort code or missing signature is the most common cause of delay. You should get an acknowledgement after submission. The internal review, in which the provider verifies your identity and checks the fund, usually takes a few weeks for a straightforward case.
After approval, a tax-free lump sum is normally paid within a few days. Under drawdown, the provider sets up the investment arrangement and you request withdrawals from there. If you have chosen an annuity, the provider either offers one directly or issues an “open market option” letter so you can approach other insurers.
Get Free Guidance Before You Commit
Pension Wise, run by MoneyHelper (part of the Money and Pensions Service), gives free, impartial guidance appointments to anyone aged 50 or over with a DC pension. The session covers your options, the tax consequences, and the traps to watch for. It is guidance rather than regulated advice, so it will not tell you exactly what to do, but it gives you solid ground before making irreversible choices such as buying an annuity. Appointments can be booked online or by phone and are offered face-to-face or over the telephone.
If your position is complex (large pots, several schemes, or a possible DB transfer), paying for regulated financial advice is worth considering. Some providers include a free advice session, so ask before spending your own money.
Nominate Your Beneficiaries on the Form
The claim form has a section for nominating beneficiaries, and it is worth spending time on. For DC pensions, if you die before 75 the remaining fund can pass to nominees tax-free as a lump sum or through drawdown. If you die at 75 or over, they pay income tax on withdrawals at their own marginal rate.6GOV.UK. Tax on Your Private Pension Contributions: Lump Sum Allowance
Most schemes treat the nomination as an expression of wish rather than a binding instruction, leaving trustees with discretion. Keep it up to date after marriage, divorce, or the birth of a child. An outdated nomination is one of the most common reasons pension death benefits go to the wrong person.
Guard Against Pension Scams
Cold calling about pensions is illegal in the UK, so if someone contacts you out of the blue offering a pension review, early access, or guaranteed returns, hang up.11Financial Conduct Authority. Pension Scams Common warning signs include promises of unusually high returns, pressure to act quickly, and complicated investment structures where it is unclear where the money ends up.
Anyone offering to help you access your pension before age 55 is almost certainly running a scam. Even if the money reaches you, HMRC treats it as an unauthorised payment and can charge tax of up to 55% on the amount, plus potential scheme sanction charges. Check the FCA register to confirm that any adviser or firm is properly authorised before agreeing to anything.
