To check how much Social Security you have, create a free “my Social Security” account at ssa.gov, where you can instantly view your complete earnings history, the credits you’ve built toward eligibility, and estimated monthly benefits at different retirement ages. If you’d rather not sign up online, you can request a paper statement by mail using Form SSA-7004, which takes four to six weeks to arrive. The Social Security Administration keeps a running record of every year of earnings reported under your Social Security number, and that record is what determines your retirement, disability, and survivor benefits.
Set Up Your Online Account
Go to ssa.gov/myaccount and sign in through one of two credential providers: Login.gov or ID.me. As of June 2025, those are the only options. The older Social Security username-and-password login has been retired.1Social Security Administration. Create an Account | my Social Security | SSA
To verify your identity through Login.gov, have three things ready:
- A government-issued photo ID (U.S. driver’s license, state ID, or passport book)
- Your Social Security number
- A U.S. phone number or mailing address for a one-time verification code
You’ll upload photos of your ID and enter your Social Security number, and Login.gov checks the information against public records. You may also be asked to take a selfie to confirm you match your photo ID. If the online check doesn’t go through, Login.gov offers in-person identity verification at participating U.S. Post Office locations.2Login.gov. Verify My Identity
Once you’re in, choose “Social Security Statement” from the dashboard. The page pulls live data from the national database, and you can view, download, or print the statement as a PDF. There is no fee.3Social Security Administration. Form SSA-7050 | Request for Social Security Earnings Information
What Your Statement Shows
The statement has three parts that answer the “how much do I have” question from different angles.
Your Earnings History
Every year you had wages or self-employment income reported under your Social Security number appears here, with the amounts taxed for Social Security and Medicare. This table is the raw material for your benefit calculation: the SSA uses your highest 35 years of indexed earnings to figure your monthly payment.4Social Security Administration. Social Security Benefit Amounts A year showing zero or a figure lower than what you actually earned will pull that average down, so this is the part of the statement worth reading line by line.
Credits You’ve Earned
You need 40 credits to qualify for retirement benefits, and you can earn up to four credits per year.5eCFR. 20 CFR Part 404 Subpart I – Records of Earnings In 2026, one credit is granted for every $1,890 in wages or self-employment income, so $7,560 in earnings during the year gets you the maximum four.6Social Security Administration. Quarter of Coverage The statement shows your running total.
Your Benefit Estimates
The redesigned online statement includes a bar graph with personalized retirement benefit estimates at nine different ages, so you can see how the monthly amount changes depending on when you start collecting.7Social Security Administration. Get Your Social Security Statement The estimates assume you keep earning at roughly your current rate. The statement also gives you estimated disability benefits and estimated survivor benefits for your spouse or children.
Request a Paper Statement Instead
If you don’t want to set up an online account, ask for a mailed statement by filling out Form SSA-7004, “Request for Social Security Statement.” You can download the PDF at ssa.gov or pick one up at a local Social Security field office.8Social Security Administration. You may also receive a statement without asking. The SSA automatically mails one about three months before your 60th birthday if you haven’t already created a my Social Security account and you aren’t currently receiving benefits.9Social Security Administration. How Can I Get a Social Security Statement? Waiting until then isn’t a good idea, because errors are much easier to fix while they’re recent.
Check for Errors and Fix Them Early
Compare every year on your statement against your own records. If a year is missing or the amount is too low, that mistake will lower your future benefits. To request a correction, gather proof of the actual earnings (a W-2, tax return, pay stub, or other employment record) and contact the SSA.10Social Security Administration. How to Correct Your Social Security Earnings Record
There’s a hard deadline. Earnings records can generally be corrected within three years, three months, and 15 days after the calendar year the wages were paid. Once that window closes, changing the record becomes much harder.11Social Security Administration. Time Limit for Correcting Earnings Records That’s the practical reason to check your statement every year or two, not just as retirement approaches. Catching a missing year six months later is straightforward. Catching it 20 years later may leave you with no remedy.
If the SSA denies a correction and you disagree, you can appeal, and you can have an attorney or other representative help at any stage.12Social Security Administration. Appeal a Decision We Made
When You Need a Certified or Itemized Record
The free statement, whether online or mailed, shows yearly totals but not employer names or a breakdown of who paid you what. For a certified or itemized version, which you might need for a legal proceeding, pension verification, or immigration case, file Form SSA-7050, “Request for Social Security Earnings Information.” Fees as of October 2024:
- Certified yearly earnings totals: $35
- Non-certified detailed (itemized) statement: $61
- Certified detailed (itemized) statement: $96
The itemized versions list individual employer names and wages for each reporting period.3Social Security Administration. Form SSA-7050 | Request for Social Security Earnings Information
Lock Down Your Account
Because your my Social Security account holds sensitive financial information, the SSA offers two optional protective blocks:
- The eServices block, which prevents anyone (including you) from viewing or changing your personal information online. Removing it requires a visit to a local Social Security office.
- The direct deposit fraud prevention block, which stops anyone from enrolling in or changing your direct deposit through the online portal or a financial institution. Removal also requires an in-person office visit.
If you think someone has used your Social Security number to open an account or make purchases, report it at IdentityTheft.gov. To report Social Security-specific fraud, waste, or abuse, file a report at oig.ssa.gov or call the SSA Office of Inspector General fraud hotline at 1-800-269-0271, available 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday, excluding federal holidays.13Social Security Administration.
