How Could Shopping Around Impact Your Credit Score?

Shopping around for a loan usually has a small, short-lived impact on your credit score, and the impact of shopping around on your credit score is smaller than most people expect: a single hard inquiry generally costs fewer than five points, and scoring models are built to treat multiple applications for the same loan as one event when they fall inside a set window. The details that matter are which loan types get that protection, how many days you have, and which scoring model your lender uses.

What a Hard Inquiry Actually Costs

When you formally apply for a loan or credit card, the lender pulls your credit report under what the Fair Credit Reporting Act calls a “permissible purpose.”1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681b – Permissible Purposes of Consumer Reports That’s a hard inquiry. It shows up on the report other lenders can see, and it typically shaves fewer than five points off a FICO score.2Experian. How Many Points Does an Inquiry Drop Your Credit Score? The hit runs slightly larger for people with thin credit files, because one inquiry represents a bigger share of the activity on the report. Someone with a long history will barely notice it.

Soft inquiries are a different animal. Checking your own credit, getting screened for a pre-approved offer, or being reviewed by a landlord or employer produces a soft pull. Soft inquiries don’t affect your score and aren’t visible to other lenders.3Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Is a Credit Inquiry? You can pull your own report as often as you want.

How Rate Shopping Protection Works

Credit scoring models understand that applying to five mortgage lenders doesn’t mean you want five mortgages. So the algorithms group multiple hard inquiries of the same loan type into a single scoring event when they fall inside a defined window. This is called deduplication, and it’s the reason comparison shopping works.

FICO adds a second layer on top. Any hard inquiry from a mortgage, auto, or student loan application made in the previous 30 days is ignored entirely by the FICO formula.4Experian. How Many Hard Inquiries Is Too Many? If you apply for a mortgage today and another lender pulls your score tomorrow, that second lender doesn’t see a point drop from yesterday’s inquiry. You don’t have to sequence your applications carefully to benefit.

Which Loans Qualify

The rules depend on the scoring model.

Under FICO, only three loan categories get the rate-shopping treatment: mortgages, auto loans, and student loans.5Experian. Do Multiple Loan Inquiries Affect Your Credit Score? Apply to three auto lenders in the same window and FICO counts it as one inquiry. Apply for two auto loans and a mortgage, and that’s two inquiries, one per category.

VantageScore is broader. All hard inquiries inside the shopping window count as a single event regardless of loan type, with an exception for collections and certain retail credit inquiries.6TransUnion. How Rate Shopping Can Impact Your Credit Score Personal loan applications get bundled under VantageScore; they don’t under FICO.

Credit cards are the important boundary. Every credit card application generates its own hard inquiry and counts individually against your score.5Experian. Do Multiple Loan Inquiries Affect Your Credit Score? Scoring models read multiple card applications as a signal you’re seeking more revolving credit, not shopping one loan. Space card applications out by several months.

How Many Days You Have

The shopping window depends on which version of which model your lender uses.

You don’t get to pick the model. The lender does, and many mortgage lenders still use older FICO versions with the narrower 14-day window. If you don’t know which model your lender uses, keep every application inside 14 days. That’s the shortest window across all models, so you’re covered no matter what. Ask your lender directly if you want confirmation before spreading applications out further.

Where Inquiries Fit in the Overall Score

New credit inquiries make up roughly 10 percent of your FICO score.8myFICO. How New Credit Impacts Your Credit Score Payment history (35 percent) and amounts owed (30 percent) matter far more. A properly deduplicated cluster of rate-shopping inquiries is a rounding error next to a missed payment.

A hard inquiry stays on your credit report for two years, but the scoring effect fades much faster. FICO only factors in inquiries from the previous 12 months, and most people see their score rebound within a few months.9Experian. How Long Do Hard Inquiries Stay on Your Credit Report VantageScore may consider inquiries for up to 24 months, with older ones weighted less. The few points at risk are almost always worth the thousands you can save on interest.

Start With Pre-Qualification

You can narrow your options before triggering any hard inquiries at all. Pre-qualification typically uses a soft pull: the lender takes a quick look at your credit and gives you a ballpark estimate with no score impact. Pre-approval is the serious step. The lender verifies income, pulls a full report, and makes a conditional commitment, which almost always means a hard inquiry.10Experian. Prequalified vs. Preapproved: What’s the Difference? Use pre-qualification to shortlist lenders, then bunch the formal applications inside your shopping window.

Disputing an Inquiry You Didn’t Authorize

If a hard inquiry shows up that you didn’t authorize, you can challenge it. Pulling credit without a permissible purpose violates federal law under the Fair Credit Reporting Act.11Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681n – Civil Liability for Willful Noncompliance

Contact both the credit bureau reporting the inquiry and the company that requested it. Send a written dispute explaining the problem with copies of any supporting documents. The bureau then has 30 days to investigate.12Consumer.ftc.gov. Disputing Errors on Your Credit Reports Certified mail with a return receipt gives you proof of delivery. If the bureau can’t verify the inquiry was legitimate, it comes off the report.

Inquiries you actually authorized can’t be removed early. They drop off on their own after two years. But if a lender promised a soft pull and ran a hard one, or if you see a pull from a company you never contacted, dispute it right away.
