How Can I Get My 1099 Form Online or From the IRS

To get your 1099 form online, start with the payer’s tax portal (ADP, Gusto, Intuit, your brokerage, or your retirement plan’s website), where a digital copy is usually posted by January 31. If it isn’t there, ask the payer for a duplicate, or pull the same income data from the IRS by downloading a free wage and income transcript through your IRS Individual Online Account.

Check the Payer’s Online Portal First

Many companies deliver 1099s electronically through payroll or accounting platforms such as ADP, Gusto, or Intuit. If you agreed to electronic delivery when you set up your account, your form is likely already posted in a section labeled “Tax Center” or “Tax Documents.” Log in, filter by the tax year, and download the PDF. The digital copy is identical to what the payer sent the IRS.

Electronic delivery requires your written consent under federal rules. Before you agreed to it, the payer had to tell you how to withdraw consent, how to request a paper copy, and what hardware or software you would need to view the form.1Internal Revenue Service. Requirements for Furnishing Form 1099-G Electronically If you never gave consent, the payer must mail you a paper copy instead.

Which portal to check depends on the type of 1099. A 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC lives with the client or platform that paid you; a 1099-INT with your bank; a 1099-DIV or 1099-B with your brokerage; a 1099-R with your retirement plan administrator; a 1099-K with the payment app or card processor.2Internal Revenue Service. Request a Duplicate From the Payer

If nothing is posted online, contact the payer directly. Email or call the human resources or accounting department, and say exactly which form you need, for example “a duplicate 1099-NEC for the 2025 tax year.” Include your full name, taxpayer identification number, and current mailing address so they can verify your identity and mail the copy to the right place.

Most companies can generate a duplicate within five to ten business days. Larger organizations may take longer in January and February while they process forms for every recipient. Ask for a timeline when you make the request, and keep a written record of the exchange. That paper trail helps if you later need to explain a delayed filing to the IRS.3Internal Revenue Service. If the business has closed or changed ownership, contacting the former payer may not be possible. Skip ahead to the IRS transcript, which will show any 1099 data the business reported before it shut down.

The IRS keeps a record of every 1099 filed under your Social Security number or taxpayer identification number. You can pull that record through a wage and income transcript, which lists the dollar amounts each payer reported. The transcript is not a copy of the actual 1099, but it carries the same figures and is accepted for tax-filing purposes.

When Your 1099 and Transcript Become Available

For the 2026 tax year, payers must send most 1099s, including the 1099-NEC, 1099-MISC, 1099-DIV, 1099-INT, 1099-K, and 1099-R, to recipients by January 31 of the following year. The 1099-B (broker proceeds) and 1099-S (real estate proceeds) are due to you by February 15. If either date falls on a weekend or federal holiday, it shifts to the next business day.2Internal Revenue Service. Wage and income transcript data for the most recent tax year typically becomes available in early February, after payers submit their filings to the IRS.9Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them If a transcript doesn’t yet show income you expect, the payer may not have filed. Check again a few weeks later.

If you haven’t received an expected 1099 by mid-February, contact the payer. If it still hasn’t arrived by the end of February, call the IRS at 800-829-1040. Have your name, address, Social Security number, and the payer’s name, address, and phone number ready.3Internal Revenue Service. What to Do When a W-2 or Form 1099 Is Missing or Incorrect

One note on the paperwork itself: starting with the 2026 tax year, the reporting threshold for many 1099 forms rose from $600 to $2,000, so a client who paid you less than $2,000 during the year is no longer required to send you a 1099-NEC.2Internal Revenue Service. Publication 1099 General Instructions for Certain Information Returns (2026 Returns) You still owe tax on that income; the threshold only controls when the payer must file the form.

Filing When the 1099 Never Arrives

A missing 1099 does not excuse you from reporting the income or extend your filing deadline. Use your own records: bank statements, invoices, payment app transaction histories, or anything else that documents what you earned.

How you handle it depends on the form:

  • Missing 1099-NEC, 1099-MISC, 1099-K, 1099-INT, or 1099-DIV. These report income but show no tax withholding. Report the income on the appropriate line of your return using your own records. No substitute form is required.
  • Missing W-2 or 1099-R. These show tax withheld from pay or distributions. If you cannot get a copy, call the IRS at 800-829-1040, and they will send you Form 4852 (Substitute for Form W-2 or Form 1099-R). Use it to estimate your income and withholding, then attach it to your return.10Internal Revenue Service. Form 4852 – Substitute for Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement, or Form 1099-R

On Form 4852, you must explain how you calculated the estimated amounts, for example from a distribution statement or pay records, and describe the steps you took to obtain the original document. Be careful with the numbers. Penalties for inaccurate amounts include a 20-percent accuracy-related penalty on the underpaid tax, and intentional misuse can trigger a 75-percent civil fraud penalty or a $5,000 penalty for filing a frivolous return.10Internal Revenue Service. Form 4852 – Substitute for Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement, or Form 1099-R

If the missing or corrected 1099 arrives after you file and the amounts differ from what you reported, file Form 1040-X to amend your return.3Internal Revenue Service. What to Do When a W-2 or Form 1099 Is Missing or Incorrect

If the 1099 You Get Is Wrong

If a 1099 shows an incorrect income amount, the wrong taxpayer identification number, or income you didn’t earn, contact the payer first and ask for a corrected form. Payers who agree will send you a new 1099 marked “CORRECTED” and file the update with the IRS.3Internal Revenue Service. What to Do When a W-2 or Form 1099 Is Missing or Incorrect

If the payer refuses or doesn’t respond, call the IRS at 800-829-1040 after the end of February. The IRS can contact the payer on your behalf. In the meantime, report the correct income based on your own records rather than the wrong number on the 1099.

If you already filed based on an incorrect 1099 and later receive a corrected version with different amounts, file Form 1040-X (Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return).11Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1040-X Attach the corrected 1099-R or W-2 to the amended return if the form shows federal income tax withholding.
