To get a copy of your 1099, you have three practical routes: ask the payer to reissue it, download it from a payroll or tax-software portal you already use, or pull a free Wage and Income Transcript from the IRS that lists every 1099 reported under your Social Security number. The payer is almost always the fastest fix. The IRS transcript is free but doesn’t populate current-year data until early February. Whatever you do, file your return on time — a missing 1099 does not push back your deadline, and you’re required to report the income either way.
When the Form Should Have Arrived
Payers must send most 1099s to recipients by January 31 of the year after the income was paid. Because January 31, 2026 falls on a Saturday, the deadline for 2025 tax year forms shifts to Monday, February 2, 2026.1Internal Revenue Service. General Instructions for Certain Information Returns A handful of variants come later. Forms 1099-B, 1099-S, and 1099-MISC reporting certain payments are due to recipients by February 15, and 1099-DIV and 1099-INT from certain trusts can arrive as late as March 15.2Internal Revenue Service. If a form you’re expecting hasn’t arrived by mid-February, start with the payer. The IRS won’t have the data yet if the payer hasn’t filed.
Ask the Payer for a Duplicate
A call to the original payer is usually the quickest fix. For a former employer, contact human resources or payroll. For a bank or brokerage, use the customer service line or the dedicated tax-document team. If a client paid you as a contractor, whoever handles their business taxes should have the form on file. Before you call, have your Social Security number or ITIN, the tax year, and the payer’s legal name in front of you.
Some payers deliver duplicates through secure email links or online portals. Others mail a physical copy that can take a week or more. A small number charge an administrative fee for reissuing older records, so ask upfront. Payers are required to keep employment tax records for at least four years, so forms from several years back are usually retrievable.3Internal Revenue Service. How Long Should I Keep Records
Check Payroll and Tax Software Portals
Before you pick up the phone, check whether you already have digital access. Payroll platforms such as ADP and Gusto typically archive historical tax forms in a “Tax Documents” section of the user portal, often for several years. If you received a 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC through one of these systems, a downloadable PDF may be sitting in your account right now.
Prior-year tax software can also help. If you imported or manually entered a 1099 into a program like TurboTax or H&R Block, the data is usually saved within that year’s return file. Open the return, look for attached worksheets or source documents, and download what you need. It won’t be an official payer copy, but you’ll have the exact figures you reported.
Pull a Free IRS Wage and Income Transcript
The IRS offers a free Wage and Income Transcript that lists every 1099, W-2, 1098, and 5498 reported under your Social Security number.4Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them The transcript is available for the current processing year and the nine prior tax years — a full decade of income records.5Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 159, How to Get a Wage and Income Transcript Current-year data generally populates in the first week of February, so a request in January will typically come back empty.
To get the transcript online, sign in to your IRS Individual Online Account. If you don’t already have an account, you’ll verify your identity through ID.me, which requires a government-issued photo ID and a live selfie taken with a smartphone or webcam.6Internal Revenue Service. New Identity Verification Process to Access Certain IRS Online Tools and Services Once you’re in, select the Wage and Income Transcript for the year you need. It displays on screen, and you can download or print it.
Two limits worth knowing. The online transcript caps out at roughly 85 income documents per year. If you have more — possible for gig workers with dozens of clients — the online system won’t generate the transcript, and you’ll need to submit Form 4506-T by mail.4Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them And a transcript is not a photocopy of the original 1099. It shows the data fields the payer reported, without the form’s layout. Mortgage lenders typically accept transcripts, though some specifically request the original form.
Request the Transcript by Phone or Mail
If you can’t use the online system, two other options are free.
The fastest alternative is the IRS automated phone line at 800-908-9946. Follow the prompts, and the IRS will mail a transcript to the address on your most recent return.7Internal Revenue Service. Get Your Tax Records and Transcripts You can’t redirect it to a different address by phone.
For more control, or to have the transcript sent to a third party such as a mortgage lender, use Form 4506-T (Request for Transcript of Tax Return). Check box 8 on the form to specify a Wage and Income Transcript, and mail or fax it to the address for your state listed in the form instructions. Most mailed requests are processed within 10 business days.8Internal Revenue Service. Request for Transcript of Tax Return
Letting Someone Else Request Your Records
If you want an accountant or tax preparer to request your 1099 data from the IRS on your behalf, file Form 8821 (Tax Information Authorization). It designates a specific person or organization to inspect or receive your confidential tax information for the tax types and years you specify, and you can use the same form to revoke a prior authorization if your preparer changes.9Internal Revenue Service. If You Need a Full Copy of the Return, Not a Transcript
A transcript shows 1099 data but isn’t a photocopy of the return you filed. If a court, agency, or lender specifically requires an actual copy, submit Form 4506 (Request for Copy of Tax Return). The IRS charges $30 per return, and you can check a box on the form to have the copy certified for court or administrative proceedings.10Internal Revenue Service. Request for Copy of Tax Return This route is slower and comes with a fee, so use it only when you need the original return rather than the income data behind it.
If the 1099 Never Arrives or Is Wrong
This is where people make the most consequential mistake: they wait for the form and miss the filing deadline. A missing 1099 does not extend your due date. For the 2025 tax year, your return is due April 15, 2026.11Internal Revenue Service. A representative can initiate a formal complaint against the payer and will mail you instructions along with Form 4852.13Internal Revenue Service. W-2 – Additional, Incorrect, Lost, Non-Receipt, Omitted Form 4852 lets you file a substitute for a missing W-2 or 1099-R by estimating your income and withholding from pay stubs, bank statements, or other records.14Internal Revenue Service. Form 4852 Substitute for Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement It does not cover other 1099 types such as 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC. For those, report the income directly on your return using your own records — invoices, contracts, bank deposits — and file on time.15Internal Revenue Service. What to Do When a W-2 or Form 1099 Is Missing or Incorrect
If the form finally arrives and the numbers differ from what you reported, file an amended return using Form 1040-X.15Internal Revenue Service. What to Do When a W-2 or Form 1099 Is Missing or Incorrect The same approach applies if a 1099 arrives with wrong figures: ask the payer for a corrected version (it will have the “CORRECTED” checkbox marked at the top),1Internal Revenue Service. General Instructions for Certain Information Returns and if none comes by the end of February, call the IRS at 800-829-1040 to have them contact the payer.
