How Can I Apply for My Social Security Card Online?

You can apply for a Social Security card online at ssa.gov if you need a replacement, and the service is free. The process takes about 10 minutes when you have a valid U.S. driver’s license, state ID, or passport and a “my Social Security” account. After you submit, the card arrives by mail within 5 to 10 business days.¹

One thing to know up front: the fully online path exists for replacement cards. First-time applicants and anyone updating a name, date of birth, or citizenship status can start online but must finish at a local office with original documents.²

Who Qualifies for the Online Process

To complete the replacement entirely online, you must be at least 18, have a U.S. mailing address, and have a “my Social Security” account.³ Your record with the SSA also has to be current: no name, date-of-birth, or citizenship changes needed. If any of those need updating, an in-person visit is required even if you start online.

U.S. citizens who meet these conditions can typically finish the request without leaving home. Lawful permanent residents and other non-citizens can begin the application online, but must visit a local office with supporting documents within 45 days to complete it.⁴

Not every state supports the online replacement portal, and availability changes. Confirm on the SSA’s replacement card page at ssa.gov before you start.¹

What to Have Ready

Before opening the application, pull together three things:

Your Social Security number. You still need to know it, even though the card is gone.
A valid, unexpired U.S. driver’s license, state-issued non-driver ID, or U.S. passport. The details on the ID must match what the SSA has on file for you.⁵
A Login.gov or ID.me account. As of June 2025, these are the only two ways to sign in to SSA online services, and older SSA usernames no longer work.³

The portal checks the ID information you enter against state identification databases. A typo or mismatch will bounce the request, so verify the numbers on your ID carefully before you submit.

Setting Up the My Social Security Account

If you don’t already have an account, go to ssa.gov/myaccount and pick either Login.gov or ID.me as your sign-in provider. Both meet federal identity verification standards, and either credential works across other federal services.³

You’ll supply an email, create a password, and set up two-step verification, usually a one-time code sent by text, phone call, or authenticator app. If you had an older SSA username, you’ll need to create a Login.gov or ID.me credential to keep using the account.

Filling Out the Replacement Application

Once you’re signed in, open the replacement card section from your dashboard. The form asks you to confirm your personal information and enter the ID number and expiration date from your driver’s license, state ID, or passport. Look everything over before submitting. Corrections after the fact mean contacting the SSA directly.

Submit, and you’re finished. There’s nothing to mail and no appointment to book if you qualify for the fully online path. If the system can’t verify your identity electronically, it will redirect you to schedule an in-person visit.⁶

The Application Is Free

Replacing your Social Security card costs nothing.⁷ If a site is asking you to pay, you’re not on the SSA portal. Private companies sometimes charge for services the SSA provides for free, and the Social Security Act prohibits misleading people into thinking those paid services are affiliated with the government.⁸ The only legitimate URL is ssa.gov.

When the Card Arrives

After a successful online submission, the SSA mails the card within 5 to 10 business days.¹ Applying by mail on Form SS-5 is slower, usually 2 to 4 weeks, because the SSA has to return your original documents too.⁹

While you’re waiting, remember that most places asking for a Social Security card really just need the number. Employers, banks, and agencies rarely need to see the physical card. If someone insists on the card before yours arrives, the SSA can sometimes confirm your number by phone to move things along.¹⁰

How Many Replacements You Can Get

Federal law caps replacements at three per year and ten over your lifetime.¹¹ The limit comes from the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 and applies whether you request the card online or in person.

Some replacements don’t count against those limits. A card issued because you legally changed your name is exempt.¹² A card reissued because your work authorization status changed and the restrictive legend needs updating is also exempt.¹¹ Cards reissued because the SSA made a mistake or the card never arrived don’t count either.¹³

If you’ve genuinely reached the limit and still need a card, the SSA can grant a hardship exception. You’ll need a letter from an employer or government agency stating that you must produce the physical card to get a job or benefit. Without that letter, the exception won’t be granted.¹⁴

When Online Won’t Work

The online-only route isn’t available for a name change on your record. You can start the application at ssa.gov after a marriage, divorce, or court-ordered name change, but you have to bring original supporting documents to a local office to finish. Acceptable proof includes a marriage certificate, divorce decree, court order, or certificate of naturalization showing the new name. The SSA needs originals or certified copies from the issuing agency, not photocopies or notarized copies, and will return them after processing.⁵

The same in-person step applies to updating citizenship or immigration status. You can begin online or by calling 1-800-772-1213, but you’ll need to bring proof of the new status to an office.¹⁵

If you’re under 18, don’t have a qualifying ID, or live in a state where the online portal isn’t offered, you have two other options. You can visit your local Social Security office or Card Center with a completed Form SS-5 and your identity documents. The SSA’s office locator at ssa.gov shows the nearest location.⁶ You can also mail Form SS-5 along with your original identity documents to your local office.¹⁶ The mail-in process runs 2 to 4 weeks, and because you’re sending original identity documents through the mail, many people prefer the in-person option.⁹
