A boleto bancário is Brazil’s standard payment slip: the merchant generates it, you receive it by email, app, or paper, and you pay it by scanning its barcode or typing its 47-digit code into a bank app, ATM, lottery house, or branch. The funds then route through the national clearing system to the merchant’s account. Every boleto in circulation today is registered in a centralized banking database before it can be collected, which is what makes it possible to pay any boleto at any participating bank.
What’s Printed on a Boleto
Every boleto follows the same layout, so any bank or payment app in Brazil can read it. The barcode sits at the top or bottom of the document and carries the payment data for automated scanners. Next to it is the linha digitável, a 47-digit numerical sequence you can type manually if a camera or scanner isn’t available.1Spring by Citi. Boleto Bancário
The first three digits of the barcode identify the issuing bank. Banco do Brasil is 001, Caixa Econômica Federal is 104, Bradesco is 237, and Itaú Unibanco is 341. The document also displays the names and tax IDs of both parties: the beneficiary (cedente) and the payer (sacado). A field called Nosso Número is a unique transaction identifier the issuing bank uses to track whether that particular debt has been paid. The expiration date and the amount owed in Brazilian reais complete the required fields.
How To Pay a Boleto
You have several channels, and all of them feed into the same national clearing network.
- Mobile banking app. Open your bank’s app, choose the boleto payment option, and scan the barcode. The app shows the beneficiary’s name and the amount so you can confirm before authorizing.
- Online banking portal. Log in and type the 47-digit linha digitável. This is the practical route when the boleto arrived as a PDF or screenshot.
- ATM. Insert your card, go to the boleto payment screen, and either scan the barcode or key in the number.2Rapyd Docs. Boleto
- Casa Lotérica. Brazil’s lottery houses accept boletos in cash and give you a receipt. This channel matters for anyone without a bank account.3Stripe. Boleto – An In-depth Guide
- Bank branch or post office. Hand the boleto to the teller. Some supermarkets and convenience stores also accept them.
Issuing a boleto is handled by the merchant through their bank, and the registration system rejects any boleto that lacks a valid CPF (for individuals) or CNPJ (for companies) for the payer. If you receive a boleto and your tax ID isn’t on it, something is wrong.
When the Payment Actually Clears
Paying a boleto is not instant. The issuing bank generally confirms the payment on the following business day, with the exact timing depending on when you paid and which bank handled it.2Rapyd Docs. Boleto – An In-depth Guide Payments made at night or on weekends usually clear on the next business day. If you’re paying something time-sensitive, don’t wait until the expiration date.
Hybrid Boletos With a PIX QR Code
A growing number of boletos now include a PIX QR code alongside the traditional barcode. You get to choose at the moment of payment. Scan the barcode and the payment settles the usual way, in one to three business days. Scan the QR code and PIX moves the money in seconds, with the merchant seeing confirmation almost immediately.
The experience in your banking app is nearly identical either way: scan, confirm the beneficiary and amount, authorize. The only visible difference is how quickly the funds leave your account and reach the merchant.
Paying Late: Fines and Interest
Missing the expiration date doesn’t erase the debt, but it does add costs. The one-time late fee (multa de mora) is capped at 2% of the amount owed. That limit comes from Article 52 of the Consumer Protection Code (Lei 8.078/1990), and any contract clause setting a higher penalty is treated as abusive and legally void.4Tribunal de Justiça do Distrito Federal e dos Territórios. Multa por Atraso em Pagamento de Boletos Não Pode Ser Maior que 2% da Prestação Daily interest (juros de mora) can also apply, typically capped at 1% per month in consumer transactions under the Civil Code.
You can pay an overdue boleto at any bank. The centralized registration system lets any participating institution look up the original document, apply the correct late charges, and process the payment with the updated total. You don’t need to go back to the merchant for a replacement.
Merchants usually set a grace window between three and fifteen days after the boleto is generated.2Rapyd Docs. Boleto If you ignore the boleto entirely, the merchant can send the debt to a collection agency, report it to credit bureaus, or pursue legal action depending on the nature of the obligation.
How To Spot a Fake Boleto
Boleto fraud is one of Brazil’s most common financial crimes. Criminals use malware that silently alters the barcode or linha digitável when you view or download a boleto on your computer, phishing emails containing counterfeit boletos from spoofed company addresses, and clipboard malware known as “bolware” that swaps the payment line when you copy and paste it. Fake boletos also circulate on WhatsApp from accounts impersonating service providers, and through fraudulent “second copy” websites that mimic real company portals.
Your best check is the confirmation screen in your own banking app. When you scan or type a boleto, the app shows the beneficiary’s name and tax ID. If that name isn’t the company you meant to pay, or if you see an individual’s CPF where a company’s CNPJ belongs, stop. Also compare the first three digits of the barcode against the bank named on the boleto. Those codes are fixed (001 for Banco do Brasil, 104 for Caixa Econômica Federal, 237 for Bradesco, 341 for Itaú Unibanco), and a mismatch is a sign the document has been tampered with.
Using DDA
Débito Direto Autorizado (DDA) is a service offered by Brazilian banks that delivers boletos issued in your name straight to your banking app, pulled from the registered banking system rather than from an email attachment that could have been altered. You review the boleto on screen and authorize payment only after confirming the details.5Banco Central do Brasil. Cadastro no DDA para Utilização do Boleto de Pagamento Eletrônico
Register through any bank where you hold an account and that offers DDA. Nothing is paid automatically; the system just displays boletos and waits for your authorization. You can cancel at any participating bank at any time, though full removal only happens once you terminate the service at every bank where you registered.5Banco Central do Brasil. Basic Precautions
A few habits reduce most of the risk. Always pay through your bank’s official app or website, not through links in emails. Keep your operating system and antivirus current, since bolware depends on infected machines. Avoid copying and pasting a linha digitável from an untrusted source, because that’s exactly where clipboard malware strikes. If a boleto arrives through an unexpected channel, call the company using a number from their official website before paying anything.
