HomeAgain Charge: Why It Appeared, How to Cancel, and Refunds

A HomeAgain charge on your bank or credit card statement is the annual fee for HomeAgain’s premium pet microchip membership, currently $26.99 per year.1HomeAgain. Premium Membership It almost always traces back to a shelter, breeder, or veterinarian who enrolled you when your pet was microchipped. A trial period ended, and the subscription renewed itself against the card on file.

The charge is for the membership, not the chip. Your pet’s microchip registration in the national recovery database is free and permanent, and canceling the paid membership does not remove it.2Merck Animal Health USA. HomeAgain

Why the Charge Showed Up Without Warning

The usual story: you adopted a pet or picked one up from a breeder, the organization chipped the animal and signed you up for a HomeAgain trial membership inside the adoption paperwork.2Merck Animal Health USA. HomeAgain A card number went onto the form at the same time. When the trial ended, HomeAgain’s terms let them charge that card automatically each year at the then-current subscription price.3HomeAgain. HomeAgain Terms and Conditions

Many owners don’t remember handing over a card, or they assumed the adoption fee covered the chip for life. It did, in a sense: the free database registration is lifelong. The $26.99 is for an add-on service tier, and it will keep hitting your card every year until you cancel it.

How to Cancel the HomeAgain Membership

HomeAgain’s terms direct you to call 1-888-HOMEAGAIN (1-888-466-3242) to end the recurring charge. Cancellation takes effect within three business days of the call.3HomeAgain. HomeAgain Terms and Conditions You can also email customer service at hacustsvc@merck.com.4HomeAgain. Contact HomeAgain

Before you call, have two things ready:

  • Your pet’s microchip number. It’s on the original adoption paperwork. If that’s gone, any vet can scan the chip and read it in seconds. Current chips use a 15-digit international standard; older ones may be 9 or 10 digits.5American Animal Hospital Association. Microchip Registry Lookup
  • The email address used when the account was first set up. The representative uses it to find your record.

Say clearly that you want to cancel the premium membership and stop all future billing. Ask for a confirmation number or email.

Can You Get a Refund?

HomeAgain’s terms state that subscription fees are non-refundable once charged.6HomeAgain. Terms and Conditions Ask anyway when you call, because front-line reps sometimes have discretion the written policy doesn’t mention. If they refuse, that’s the end of the road with HomeAgain itself.

Your next option is your card issuer. Under federal law, you can dispute a credit card billing error by writing to the address your issuer designates for billing inquiries, within 60 days of the statement that showed the charge. The issuer has to acknowledge the complaint within 30 days and resolve it within 90. You can withhold payment on the disputed amount while the investigation runs, and the issuer can’t report you as delinquent or send it to collections over it.7Federal Trade Commission. If the charge hit a debit card, call your bank right away. Debit dispute windows are shorter, and the money is already out of your account while the bank investigates.

What You Keep and What You Lose After Canceling

Keep in mind what the free registration already gives you, so you know what you’re actually giving up. The database listing stays active for your pet’s whole life at no cost. You can update your address, phone, and email for free whenever you need to, and if a shelter scans your pet’s chip, HomeAgain will still contact you.2Merck Animal Health USA. HomeAgain

What ends with cancellation is the premium bundle: rapid lost-pet alerts to shelters, vets, and volunteers in your area; the 24/7 veterinary medical hotline; up to $500 in travel assistance if your pet turns up 500 or more miles from home; and personalized lost-pet posters generated from your account.1HomeAgain. Premium Membership If your pet lives mostly indoors and in a fenced yard, the free tier is often enough. If your pet roams or you travel often, those perks may be worth the $26.99.

A Free Backup Registry

If you cancel but want your chip listed somewhere besides HomeAgain, free registries exist. FreePetChipRegistry.com takes any brand of microchip, charges nothing to register or update your contact details, and participates in the American Animal Hospital Association’s Universal Pet Microchip Lookup Tool, which is the centralized search most shelters and clinics already use when they scan a found pet.8Free Pet Chip Registry. A free listing doesn’t replace your HomeAgain record; it sits alongside it. Being in more than one registry raises the odds that whoever finds your pet reaches you quickly.
