If you are married or in a civil partnership, jointly assessed for tax, and one of you stays home to care for a dependent, you can claim the Home Carer Tax Credit. For 2026 it is worth up to €1,950, taken directly off your tax bill.1Revenue Irish Tax and Customs. Home Carer Tax Credit Rates The full amount is available if the home carer’s own income for the year is €7,200 or less; the credit tapers away between €7,200 and €11,100 and disappears above that.
Who Can Claim
You must be married or in a civil partnership and jointly assessed for income tax.2Revenue Irish Tax and Customs. Qualifying for Home Carer Tax Credit Cohabiting couples who have not married or entered a civil partnership do not qualify, no matter how the caring is shared at home.
The home carer is the spouse or civil partner who stays home to look after one or more dependents. Only one credit applies per couple, no matter how many people are being cared for.
Who Counts as a Dependent
Under Section 466A of the Taxes Consolidation Act 1997, the person cared for must fall into one of three categories:3Chartered Accountants Ireland. Taxes Consolidation Act 1997 – Section 466A Home Carer Tax Credit
- A child for whom you or your spouse currently receives Child Benefit.
- A person aged 65 or over, which can include a parent, grandparent, or other relative.
- A person who is permanently incapacitated, physically or mentally, to the point where they cannot maintain themselves.
The dependent normally has to live with you. There is one exception, and only for relatives: a relative who lives next door, on the same property, or within two kilometres can count, provided a direct communication link exists between the two homes.3Chartered Accountants Ireland. The dependent cannot be your spouse or civil partner.
How Much You Get
The maximum for 2026 is €1,950.4Revenue Irish Tax and Customs. Budget 2026 Summary The amount you actually receive depends on what the home carer earns during the year:
- Income of €7,200 or less: full €1,950 credit.
- Income between €7,200 and €11,100: a reduced credit. Take the income above €7,200, halve it, and subtract that from €1,950.
- Income of €11,100 or more: no credit.1Revenue Irish Tax and Customs. Home Carer Tax Credit Rates
An example. The home carer earns €9,000 in 2026. The excess above €7,200 is €1,800. Half of that is €900. The credit drops from €1,950 to €1,050.
What Counts as the Carer’s Income
Most income sources count toward the €7,200 threshold: employment, self-employment, rental income, deposit interest, and taxable social welfare payments. Carer’s Allowance and Carer’s Benefit are specifically excluded from that calculation, so receiving either will not push you over the limit.1Revenue Irish Tax and Customs. The Trade-Off With the Increased Standard Rate Band
If the home carer has any income at all, you cannot claim the Home Carer Tax Credit and the increased standard rate cut-off point for dual-income couples in the same year.5Citizens Information. Home Carer Tax Credit You have to pick one.
A single-income married couple pays 20% on the first €53,000 and 40% above. When both spouses earn, the 20% band can be increased by up to €35,000, capped at the lower earner’s actual income.6Revenue Irish Tax and Customs. Tax Rates, Bands and Reliefs The question is whether the €1,950 credit saves you more than the extra band would. When the carer earns very little, the credit almost always wins. As the carer’s earnings rise, more of their income sits in the 40% band without the increase, and the band can eventually deliver a bigger benefit. Revenue can run the comparison for you, and it is worth checking each year the carer’s income changes.

Keep Your Records, and Fix Mistakes Early
Revenue expects you to keep records supporting the claim for at least six years.8Revenue Irish Tax and Customs. Books and Records – Tax and Duty Manual Part 38-03-17 For this credit that means payslips or income statements for the carer, evidence of Child Benefit where relevant, and documentation of the dependent’s status such as medical certificates for incapacity or proof of age. If Revenue queries the claim and the supporting records are not there, the credit can be withdrawn and interest charged on the resulting underpayment.
An honest mistake is treated differently from a deliberate overclaim. Innocent errors carry no penalty, only repayment of the credit plus statutory interest from the date the overpayment arose. Careless errors carry a penalty of 20% of the underpaid tax, rising to 40% where the shortfall exceeds 15% of the tax correctly payable. Deliberate overclaims can attract a penalty of up to 100%. All of these penalties are reduced substantially where you come forward before Revenue prompts you, and no penalty at all applies where the total shortfall is under €6,000 and the error was not deliberate.9Revenue Irish Tax and Customs.
