High Year Tenure in the Air Force is the maximum number of years you can serve on active duty at your current enlisted grade, and reaching that ceiling without a promotion triggers either retirement, separation, a waiver, or a move to the Reserve or Guard. The clock that matters is Total Active Federal Military Service, which counts every year of active duty across all branches, not just your Air Force time.1Joint Base Charleston. AF Returns Enlisted High Year of Tenure to Standards Your HYT date is a hard boundary: if your Date of Separation falls after it, the Air Force rolls the DOS back to match, and you leave in the grade you hold on that date.2U.S. Air Force. High Year of Tenure Changes Explained
Current HYT Limits by Rank
In December 2023, the Air Force extended the limits by two years for most enlisted grades. The current caps are:
- E-1 (Airman Basic): 10 years
- E-2 (Airman): 10 years
- E-3 (Airman First Class): 10 years
- E-4 (Senior Airman): 12 years
- E-5 (Staff Sergeant): 22 years
- E-6 (Technical Sergeant): 24 years
- E-7 (Master Sergeant): 26 years
- E-8 (Senior Master Sergeant): 28 years
- E-9 (Chief Master Sergeant): 30 years
The E-9 cap stayed at 30 years while the others moved. These limits apply to active duty Air Force and Space Force members under the same Department of the Air Force instructions. Reserve and Air National Guard members follow separate HYT rules and were not affected by the 2023 changes.1Joint Base Charleston. AF Returns Enlisted High Year of Tenure to Standards
What Happens When You Reach Your HYT Date
Everything downstream turns on one number: whether you have 20 years of active duty on the date you hit HYT.
With 20 or More Years
If you reach HYT with at least 20 years of service, you’re retirement-eligible. The Air Force processes a retirement rather than a separation, and you draw retired pay under whichever plan applies based on when you entered service.3Defense Finance and Accounting Service. Eligibility for Military Retirement Pay4Military Compensation and Financial Readiness. Active Duty Retirement Your retirement effective date cannot extend past your HYT date.
With Fewer Than 20 Years
Without 20 years, there’s no retired pay. The Air Force separates you administratively, and the separation authority publishes orders and issues discharge documents.5Department of the Air Force. DAFI 36-3211 HYT separations are generally characterized as honorable.
Your Reenlistment Eligibility code reflects the HYT-driven exit. Airmen with 20 or more years of total active service who are within 23 months of their HYT date receive an RE-2T or RE-2U code depending on time left. Those denied continued service under the NCO Career Status Program receive an RE-2X.6Department of the Air Force. DAFI 36-2606 – Reenlistment and Extension of Enlistment An RE-2 series code blocks immediate reenlistment in the Air Force but doesn’t necessarily prevent you from joining the Reserve, Guard, or another branch.
HYT Waivers
Waivers exist, but the Air Force treats them as genuine exceptions rather than a routine path to more time in service. An extension is granted only when losing a specific Airman would cause significant mission degradation or failure, and a waiver cannot substitute for poor manning or force development planning.7Headquarters RIO. High Year Tenure (HYT)
A few specifics shape whether a request is realistic:
- Extensions come in one-year increments and cannot exceed three years total, or one day before you turn 62, whichever comes first.6Department of the Air Force. DAFI 36-2606 – Reenlistment and Extension of Enlistment
- The Air Force Reserve Command commander (AFRC/CC) is the approval authority. Any commander in your chain can disapprove the request, and that disapproval is final with no appeal.6Department of the Air Force. DAFI 36-2606 – Reenlistment and Extension of Enlistment
- Your unit commander must demonstrate that no other Airman can perform the duties tied to your position, typically with data on how many personnel are in or awaiting technical school and how many are in upgrade training.8Holloman Air Force Base. Strong evaluations and a solid record aren’t enough on their own. If leadership can’t document a genuine hole in mission capability, the waiver won’t clear.
Staying In Without Staying on Active Duty
If a waiver isn’t in the cards, service in a different status often is.
Palace Chase and Palace Front
Palace Chase lets active duty Airmen leave before their commitment ends to move into the Air Force Reserve. Enlisted members need at least half of their initial enlistment complete; officers need two-thirds of their active duty service commitment.9Department of Defense. Palace Chase Eligibility You take on an extended reserve obligation in exchange for the early release.
Palace Front is for Airmen who have already completed their active duty obligation and want to move into the Reserve without a break in service.10403rd Wing. Palace Chase, Palace Front: Transition from Active Duty to Reserve The Reserve carries both traditional drilling positions and full-time roles.11Air Force Accessions Center. Guard, Reserve, or Another Branch
A move to the Guard or Reserve in a traditional drilling status generally isn’t blocked by active duty HYT. Active Guard Reserve billets are the exception: those full-time positions follow the same HYT structure as active duty. An inter-service transfer is also worth looking at, since each branch sets its own HYT limits and may have different needs for your specialty.
Money on the Way Out
Involuntary Separation Pay
Airmen involuntarily separated with between 6 and 19 years of active service may qualify for Involuntary Separation Pay.12Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 10 USC 1174 – Separation Pay Upon Involuntary Discharge or Release From Active Duty Full ISP equals 10 percent of your years of active service times 12 times your monthly basic pay at discharge; half ISP is exactly half that figure.13Military Compensation and Financial Readiness. Involuntary Separation Pay (Non-Disability) A Technical Sergeant with 15 years and monthly basic pay near $4,700 would draw full ISP of roughly $84,600.
The strings matter. If you later receive VA disability compensation, the VA deducts the entire separation pay amount from your disability checks before you see anything.14Comptroller of the Department of Defense. Recoupment of Separation Pay Payments If you eventually earn military retired pay through Reserve service, the separation pay is recouped from those retirement checks. ISP is taxable in the year you receive it.
TSP Under the Blended Retirement System
If you’re under BRS, you keep every dollar of your own TSP contributions no matter when you separate. Government matching and the automatic 1 percent vest after two years of service, so any Airman facing HYT is well past that line and takes the full balance out the door.15Thrift Savings Plan. Revision to Implementation of the Blended Retirement System Under the legacy retirement system, separating before 20 years meant leaving with nothing on the retirement side.
Healthcare After Separation
The Transitional Assistance Management Program provides 180 days of TRICARE coverage for you and your eligible family members after an involuntary separation under honorable conditions.16TRICARE. Transitional Assistance Management Program TAMP coverage looks essentially like your active duty benefit, but the six-month clock starts at separation.
Once TAMP ends, the Continued Health Care Benefit Program offers TRICARE-like coverage on a premium basis, with family coverage running about $5,339 per quarter. The enrollment window after TAMP is limited, so apply before it closes. If you have a service-connected disability rating, VA healthcare may be a stronger long-term option depending on your percentage.
Transition Timeline and Move Home
Airmen approaching HYT know the date well ahead of time. The Transition Assistance Program is mandatory, with deadlines measured backward from your separation date:17Air Force Personnel Center. Transition Assistance Program
- Initial Counseling no later than 365 days before separation
- Pre-Separation Counseling no later than 365 days before separation
- Capstone review no later than 90 days before separation, verifying you’ve met Career Readiness Standards
The military also pays to move you. If you’re separating with separation pay after eight or more years of continuous active duty, you can pick a Home of Selection anywhere in the continental United States, and the Air Force reimburses PCS travel and transportation to that location. With fewer than eight years, travel is reimbursed to your Home of Record or the place you entered active duty.18Department of Defense. Joint Travel Regulations – Clarification of Entitlements for Retirement and Separation Travel Travel must begin within 180 days of separation for standard allowances, though extensions up to six years may be available through the Secretarial Process.
Separated veterans also qualify for Unemployment Compensation for Ex-servicemembers, filed through the state where you settle. Weekly benefit amounts vary by state and are based on your military pay, so the figure differs depending on where you file.
