You have two ways to submit it. Paying the Fee
The premium processing fee is separate from the I-765 filing fee. What the 30-Business-Day Clock Actually Buys You
Once USCIS receives a properly completed I-907 with the correct fee, the agency commits to taking action within 30 business days. An RFE Resets the Clock
If USCIS issues a Request for Evidence or a notice of intent to deny, the 30-business-day period does not pause. It fully resets. Why Premium Processing Matters More Than It Used To
Two recent rule changes have made the premium option far more consequential for H-4 spouses, especially those renewing.
First, effective October 30, 2025, USCIS ended the automatic extension of employment authorization that previously let renewal applicants keep working for up to 540 days while USCIS decided the case.8U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Second, effective December 4, 2025, USCIS reduced the maximum validity period for newly issued EADs to 18 months.10U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Travel Rules While Your Application Is Pending
Premium processing does not change what happens if you leave the country while your paperwork is being adjudicated, and the rules turn on which forms you filed.
If you already hold valid H-4 status and filed only Form I-765, you can generally travel. USCIS does not require you to be in the U.S. for the I-765 to be decided. You still need valid travel documents to return, and the EAD card itself is neither a travel document nor an entry visa.
If you filed Form I-539 to extend or change your status alongside the I-765, do not leave the country before both are decided. Departure while an I-539 change-of-status application is pending causes USCIS to treat it as abandoned, and that abandonment can also sink the concurrent EAD application. Advance parole does not prevent this outcome.
Even where travel is permitted, a biometrics appointment or RFE issued while you are abroad can lapse before you get back. Re-entry also generates a new I-94, and because EAD validity is tied to your I-94, that can affect the expiration date on the card you eventually receive.
Getting an SSN and Handling a Missing Card
If you don’t already have a Social Security number, request one on Form I-765 by filling out the SSA section. USCIS shares the information with the Social Security Administration, and the SSN card should arrive no later than 14 days after your EAD.11Social Security Administration. You can also apply in person at any Social Security office after receiving your EAD; that route generally takes about two weeks, and can take another two weeks if the SSA needs to verify your immigration documents with USCIS.
The physical EAD card is produced and mailed after approval.
