H-1B Stamping: Interview, Documents, Fees, and I-94 Check

H-1B visa stamping is the process of getting a physical visa foil placed in your passport at a U.S. embassy or consulate abroad so you can board a flight to the United States and pass CBP inspection. An approved I-797 lets you work; the stamp lets you enter. As of October 2025, nearly every H-1B applicant has to attend an in-person consular interview to get one, so the process now takes more planning than it used to.

What to Bring and What You’ll Pay

Start with the original Form I-797, Notice of Action, from USCIS. Bring the original, not a photocopy. Your passport must have at least six months of validity beyond your intended stay, plus at least one blank page for the visa foil.1U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Six-Month Validity Update Keeping the facing page blank is a good idea so a CBP officer has room to stamp it when you arrive. A few countries are exempt from the six-month rule through bilateral agreements, but unless you’ve confirmed yours qualifies, plan for the full requirement.

Next, complete the DS-160 online at ceac.state.gov.2U.S. Department of State Electronic Application Center. Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application Give yourself about 90 minutes. The form asks for personal history, travel plans, employer details including both headquarters and your actual work location, and educational background. Consular officers cross-reference your answers against the petition data in government systems, so accuracy matters.

The DS-160 also requires you to list every social media handle you’ve used in the past five years on the platforms it specifies. If you’ve never used social media, select “None” — you cannot skip the question. Officers will not ask for passwords, but inaccurate answers can result in a denial.3U.S. Department of State. Beyond the required set, bring a current employer support letter, your offer letter, and recent pay stubs. If your placement is at a client site, bring documentation of that arrangement too.

The Interview Is Now Required

Older guides describe a “dropbox” process that let many H-1B holders skip the interview. That option is largely gone. Effective October 1, 2025, the State Department narrowed interview waiver eligibility to diplomatic visa holders, B-1/B-2 renewals within 12 months of expiration, and H-2A renewals within 12 months of expiration.6U.S. Department of State. Interview Waiver Update September 18, 2025 H-1B holders are not on that list, even those who previously qualified under the older 48-month rule. Plan for an in-person appointment.

Booking and Attending the Appointment

Schedule through the official visa services portal for the country where you’re applying. The system links your DS-160 confirmation number with your MRV receipt to unlock dates. Wait times swing hard by post and season. The State Department publishes estimates for every embassy and consulate, and it’s worth checking before you commit to travel.7U.S. Department of State. Visa Appointment Wait Times Some posts in India run months-long backlogs; others clear within weeks.

The PIMS Check Behind the Scenes

Even with the original I-797 in hand, the consular officer independently verifies your petition through the Petition Information Management Service (PIMS). In roughly 9% of cases the data is missing or incorrectly entered, which can delay your visa while the post asks the Kentucky Consular Center to verify manually.8U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Recommendations Regarding USCIS’ Role in the Petition Information Management Service If your employer filed the I-129 without the required duplicate package, the odds of a gap go up. Ask your employer or attorney to confirm the duplicate went in before you fly.

Biometrics, Security, and the Interview Itself

Many posts split the process into two visits: fingerprinting and a photograph at a Visa Application Center (VFS Global, CGI Federal, or similar), then the interview at the consulate. Consulate security is strict. No electronics of any kind, including phones, laptops, and smartwatches. No backpacks, large bags, food, or beverages.9U.S. Embassy & Consulates in Canada. Security Procedures at Embassy and Consulates Some posts have external lockers nearby, but plan for the possibility that they don’t.

At the window, expect questions about your job duties, your employer, and your qualifications for the specialty occupation. Answer directly and specifically. If you work at a client site, be ready to explain how your employer maintains control over your work. This is where the employer letter and pay stubs earn their spot in your folder.

If You’re Placed in Administrative Processing

Not every interview ends with an approval on the spot. When the officer needs more information or internal verification, they issue what’s commonly called a “221(g) refusal,” named for the section of the Immigration and Nationality Act that authorizes it.10Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 8 USC 1201 – Issuance of Visas It’s a pause, not a permanent denial. You’ll receive a form at the window telling you what’s needed.

Timing depends on the reason. A simple document request often resolves in one to four weeks after you submit. Employer verification can run one to three months. Security and background checks run three to six months. Cases sent to Washington for a Security Advisory Opinion can stretch past a year. The State Department’s stated target is 60 days, but it asks applicants not to inquire until 180 days have passed. You can track whether your passport is still at the consulate through the Consular Electronic Application Center using your DS-160 application ID.

Passport Return and How Long the Stamp Lasts

After approval, the consulate holds your passport for several business days to print and affix the visa foil. Most posts use courier services that offer delivery to your address or free pickup at a designated Visa Application Center. Home delivery and premium pickup locations carry extra fees that vary by country. You’ll get a tracking email when the passport ships. If you’re picking up in person, bring government-issued identification.

Validity depends on two things: the dates on your approved petition and the reciprocity schedule for your country of citizenship. The consulate issues the stamp for whichever period is shorter.11U.S. Department of State Foreign Affairs Manual. 9 FAM 402.10 – Temporary Workers and Trainees For some nationalities, the reciprocity schedule caps H-1B stamps at one year even if the petition runs three. If that’s your situation, you’ll need a new stamp each time you travel internationally after the current one expires, though your underlying work authorization keeps running. The consulate will annotate the visa with “PETITION VALID TO” followed by the petition’s end date so CBP sees the full picture.

Check Your I-94 After You Land

Once you clear CBP inspection, your admission record is created electronically. Paper I-94 cards are largely gone. Retrieve your electronic Form I-94 at i94.cbp.dhs.gov by entering your name, date of birth, and passport information.12U.S. Customs and Border Protection. I-94 Official Website The record shows your I-94 number, most recent entry date, class of admission (should read H-1B), and the “admit until” date.

Do this within a day or two of arrival. If the class of admission is wrong or the admit-until date doesn’t match your petition, correct it right away at a local CBP deferred inspection office or by contacting CBP. Errors can create problems with your employer’s I-9 and, if left alone, can make you look out of status. Print a copy too; your employer, landlord, and bank may ask for it.

Family and Third-Country Stamping

H-4 spouses and children under 21 can generally attend the same appointment as the principal applicant. Each dependent needs a separate DS-160 and a separate MRV payment. Bring a copy of the principal’s I-797, a marriage certificate for a spouse, birth certificates for children, and their own valid passports. H-4 work authorization through an EAD is a separate USCIS filing on Form I-765 and is not part of the stamping process.13U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Employment Authorization for Certain H-4 Dependent Spouses

You can also apply at a consulate in a country where you aren’t a citizen, called third-country national processing, often in Canada or Mexico. It sometimes saves time when your home post is backed up, but it carries real risk. Border-post officers tend to be less familiar with documents from other countries and may decline to process your case. If you’ve been out of status or overstayed your I-94, border consulates won’t take the application. Nationals of state-sponsors-of-terrorism countries are excluded from TCN processing at border posts. A denial abroad also strips your ability to use automatic visa revalidation to re-enter, so a bad outcome in Canada can leave you stuck outside the U.S. until your home consulate processes you. Most immigration attorneys recommend stamping at home unless the convenience is substantial.

Domestic Renewal Isn’t Available

The State Department ran a limited pilot in early 2024 that let some H-1B holders renew their stamps inside the United States. It ended April 1, 2024, and as of 2026 no permanent domestic renewal service has launched. If your stamp expires and you need to travel, you still need to visit a consulate abroad.
