Whether you need a Guyana visa depends on your passport. Nationals of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and most EU countries can enter for short stays without one, while travelers from visa-required countries need either a visa issued by a Guyana embassy or a pre-approved Visa on Arrival letter secured before they board the plane.1Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Who Can Enter Without a Visa
Guyana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs publishes the list of visa-exempt nationalities. If your country is on it, you can arrive and be admitted for a short visit without applying for anything in advance.1Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Visa Information
Exempt or not, everyone meets the same baseline at the border. Your passport must have at least six months of remaining validity, and you should carry proof of onward or return travel plus evidence you can support yourself during the visit.2U.S. Embassy in Guyana. Ask the Consul – April 2024
Visa on Arrival: Get the Letter Before You Fly
If your nationality requires a visa and there is no Guyana embassy or consulate where you can apply, the Visa on Arrival route is available. The name is misleading. You cannot simply show up and get a stamp. You must first obtain a pre-approval letter, and without it airlines will not let you board.3Embassy of Guyana. Visa on Arrival The physical visa is stamped into your passport when you land, but the approval must be in hand before departure.
Applications go through the government’s online portal at eservices.iss.gov.gy. You upload your passport biodata page, a passport photo, a birth certificate, and a letter requesting the visa on arrival, along with the other supporting documents the portal requests. After submission you receive a reference number for tracking.4Immigration Support Services. Visitor Visa
Which Visa Category Fits Your Trip
Guyana issues several visa types, each tied to a purpose. Applying under the wrong one causes delays or a denial.
Visitor or Tourist Visa
This covers vacations, family visits, seminars, religious events, and other short-term activities that do not involve paid work. Guyana’s High Commission in India describes it as valid for stays of three months or less.5High Commission of Guyana in India. Visa to Enter Guyana The Consulate General in New York notes visitors must show finances covering at least 30 days of expenses.6Consulate General of Guyana, New York. Visas Paid employment of any kind is prohibited on this visa.
Business Visa
Use this for meetings, training, exploring commercial opportunities, or visiting company sites. It can be issued as a single entry or as a multiple-entry visa valid for up to five years, depending on the applicant’s needs.7Embassy of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, State of Qatar. Visa Procedures A business visa does not authorize employment. If you will be working for a Guyanese employer, you need an employment visa.
Employment Visa
The employment visa is for people who have secured a job in Guyana. Applications go through the Ministry of Home Affairs and its Immigration Support Services division. You submit a letter addressed to the relevant minister requesting the visa, along with copies of your employer’s business registration, income tax compliance documentation, your full passport with all entry stamps, a police clearance, and a medical report. A single missing document will hold up processing.8Ministry of Home Affairs. Application Form for Employment Visa

Student Visa
Foreign nationals studying at a Guyanese university or school need a student visa, and the key document is an acceptance letter from an accredited institution. School-age children of foreign nationals already living or working in Guyana also fall under this category.9Embassy of Guyana. Student VISA
Transit Visa
If you are only passing through Guyana on your way somewhere else, you generally do not apply in advance. Immigration officers issue either a landing permit or a transit visa at the airport, depending on how long you will be in the country. Bring a passport with at least six months of validity, proof of onward travel, and a yellow fever certificate if it applies to you. Travelers staying overnight should also have proof of accommodation and sufficient funds.10Embassy of Guyana. Transit Visa or Landing Permit
Documents You’ll Need
The exact list varies slightly by embassy and visa type, but the core requirements for an embassy application are consistent:
- A completed application form, submitted in duplicate.
- Your original passport, with at least six months of validity remaining and at least one blank page for the visa stamp.
- Two recent, identical passport-sized color photos taken against a white background.
- Confirmed hotel reservations or a letter of invitation from a host in Guyana.
- A recent bank statement or similar financial evidence showing you can cover your expenses.

How and Where to Apply
Guyana does not run a general electronic visa system. For most applicants, submission is physical: in person at a Guyana embassy or consulate, or by registered courier. Processing times published by different missions vary. The Embassy in Qatar says a visa can be issued in as few as three working days when documents are complete.7Embassy of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, State of Qatar. Visa Procedures The High Commission in London states a minimum of five working days.11Guyana High Commission London. Visa Application Advisory The High Commission in India recommends applying at least three weeks before travel.5High Commission of Guyana in India. Visa on Arrival applicants take the different track described above: online submission through the e-services portal, then wait for the pre-approval letter before booking the flight.4Immigration Support Services. Visitor Visa
Fees
Visa fees depend on the category and on the mission processing your application. The Consulate General in New York lists the Visitor Visa on Arrival at USD $25, with an expedited option at USD $35.6Consulate General of Guyana, New York. Some accept only money orders or bank drafts.
Extending Your Stay
If you are already in Guyana and want more time, you can apply for an extension through the Ministry of Home Affairs. Each extension covers three months, and you can get a maximum of two.12Guyana Visa Portal. Visitor Visa Extension
The application is a letter addressed to the Head of Immigration and Support Services requesting the extension, submitted with financial evidence, a copy of your full passport including all stamps, and a passport photo. If you have a Guyanese spouse or children born in Guyana, add their birth and marriage certificates.12Guyana Visa Portal. Visitor Visa Extension
The processing fee is GYD $5,125 for a standard three-month extension. For an extension exceeding three months, the fee rises to GYD $28,700. Payment is by cash or manager’s cheque payable to the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs.12Guyana Visa Portal. Visitor Visa Extension Apply before your authorized stay lapses. Overstaying can lead to detention, deportation, or trouble re-entering later.
Yellow Fever and Health Requirements
Travelers arriving directly from the United States do not need a yellow fever vaccination to enter Guyana. If you are traveling from or transiting through a country where yellow fever is present, including a layover of more than four hours, Guyana requires proof of vaccination for anyone aged one year or older.13CDC. Guyana – Traveler View The rule applies even if you were only in the transit area of an airport in an affected country. Carry your International Certificate of Vaccination with your passport; you may be asked for it at immigration. Yellow fever certificates are also referenced as a condition of entry in the transit visa requirements where applicable.10Embassy of Guyana. Transit Visa or Landing Permit
