Guatemala’s visa requirements depend on your nationality. Citizens of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, European Union member states, Australia, and many other countries can enter for tourism or casual business without a visa and stay up to 90 days on a passport stamp. Travelers from other countries must apply at a Guatemalan consulate before departure, and some of those applications also need approval from immigration authorities in Guatemala City before the consulate can issue anything.
Visa-Free Entry and Passport Rules
If your nationality qualifies for visa-free entry, an immigration officer stamps your passport at the airport or land border and that stamp authorizes a stay of up to 90 days. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date, with at least two blank pages for stamps.1GOV.UK. Guatemala Travel Advice – Entry Requirements
Visa-free entry only covers tourism and short informal business. Any stay longer than 90 days, or any activity involving employment, study, or paid consulting, requires a visa regardless of your nationality. Immigration officers can also ask any traveler for proof of onward or return travel and evidence of enough money to cover the trip, and cash of $10,000 or more must be declared with its source identified.2Travel.State.Gov. Who Needs a Visa
Guatemala sorts nationalities into three categories. Category A passports enter visa-free. Category B nationals need a visa, and the consulate they apply to can issue it directly. Category C nationals need what Guatemala calls a consulted visa: the application goes through a consulate, but the Guatemalan Institute of Migration (IGM) in Guatemala City has sole authority to grant or deny it and is under no obligation to approve.3Guatemalan Institute of Migration. Visa Application for Category C Countries or Consulted Visa
The practical difference is time. Category B applications move at the pace of the consulate. Category C applications add weeks because the file has to travel to Guatemala City for review. If you fall into Category C, start well before your intended travel date and expect the possibility of denial.
The CA-4 Clock
Guatemala shares a single 90-day tourist clock with El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua under the Central America-4 agreement. Entering any one of the four countries starts the clock, and moving between them does not restart it.4Portal sobre migración. Guatemala Visa Requirements and Application Process Sixty days in Honduras leaves you 30 days for Guatemala, not 90.
To get a fresh 90 days, you have to leave the CA-4 zone entirely, which means traveling to a non-member country such as Mexico, Belize, or Costa Rica before returning. Keep the original CA-4 entry stamp visible in your passport, since Guatemalan immigration uses that date to work out how much of your 90 days remains.5Guatemalan Institute of Migration. Application for Extension of the Tourist or Traveler Visa
One boundary worth flagging: the CA-4 covers tourist movement only. A temporary residence permit in one CA-4 country does not give you the right to live or work in another. Each country runs its own residency and employment rules.
Documents and Fees for a Visa Application
Whether your application is ordinary or consulted, the core package is broadly the same. Consulates can add requirements, so confirm the current list with the specific office handling your case before assembling everything.
- A passport with at least six months of validity beyond your arrival date and enough blank pages for stamps.1GOV.UK. Guatemala Travel Advice – Entry Requirements
- A completed application form covering personal details, employment, and itinerary.
- Two recent passport-sized color photos with a white background.
- Recent bank statements or an international credit card showing you can cover the trip.
- Flight reservations and hotel bookings, or a letter from your host in Guatemala.
- A return ticket or onward itinerary out of Guatemala.
Work or study visas add documents such as a job offer letter from a Guatemalan employer, proof of enrollment from a Guatemalan school, or a police background check from your home country.6U.S. Embassy in Guatemala. Guatemalan Residence and Work Permits Supporting documents that are not in Spanish generally need a certified translation. Some consulates are more flexible than others, but the safest approach is to have everything translated by a certified or sworn translator before submission. Certified translations for visa work typically cost between $20 and $70 per page.
Consular fees for a tourist or traveler visa are $50 for a single entry and $150 for multiple entries.7Embajada de Guatemala en los Estados Unidos. Extending a Stay Past 90 Days
If 90 days is not enough, you can apply for a single extension through the IGM before your authorized stay expires. The extension costs $25 and has to be filed while you are still within your allowed time.5Guatemalan Institute of Migration. Application for Extension of the Tourist or Traveler Visa The IGM asks for the extension application form, your valid passport with the original entry stamp visible, financial proof in the form of an outbound ticket or international credit card or a sworn statement from a Guatemalan guarantor, and a receipt for the $25 fee paid in U.S. dollars or the quetzal equivalent.
Overstaying is serious. Once your authorized stay expires without an extension, the IGM can impose fines for each day of irregular stay and has the authority to expel you and cancel your visa.5Guatemalan Institute of Migration. Application for Extension of the Tourist or Traveler Visa An overstay on your record can also complicate later entries into Guatemala and other CA-4 countries. If it is clear you will run out of time, file the extension immediately rather than waiting for departure.
When You Need More Than a Tourist Entry
Living, working, or studying in Guatemala beyond a tourist stay requires temporary residence through the IGM. The process carries a $25 base application fee for all categories, plus a category-specific fee that varies by purpose and duration: workers pay from $200 for one year up to $500 for three to five years; students pay $100 per year for up to five years; religious workers, refugees, and asylum seekers pay $50 for up to five years; investors, artists, athletes, and researchers are assessed case by case.6U.S. Embassy in Guatemala. Guatemalan Residence and Work Permits
All temporary residence applications require a valid passport with a certified copy legalized by a Guatemalan notary, a criminal background record from your home country, and your immigration movement record showing your most recent entry into Guatemala. Employment requires a separate work permit, which the Guatemalan employer is responsible for filing with the Ministry of Labor. Once documents are in, work permits for eligible applicants are typically granted within 15 to 20 days.6U.S. Embassy in Guatemala. Guatemalan Residence and Work Permits
Health and Customs Conditions on Entry
Guatemala does not require vaccinations for direct travel from the United States or Europe. The exception is yellow fever: if you are arriving from or transiting through a country with yellow fever transmission risk, you must present a yellow fever vaccination certificate. That rule applies to travelers over one year of age and includes layovers longer than 12 hours in affected countries.9Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Guatemala – Travelers’ Health If your route runs through parts of South America or sub-Saharan Africa, check the WHO’s yellow fever risk list against your transit country.
Beyond entry, the CDC recommends Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, and typhoid vaccinations for Guatemala, and malaria prophylaxis for visits to certain lowland departments including Petén, Izabal, and Alta Verapaz. Antigua, Guatemala City, and Lake Atitlán are malaria-free.9Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Guatemala – Travelers’ Health
Before landing, complete the Regional Traveler Affidavit (Declaración Jurada Regional de Viajero) electronically through Guatemala’s SAT tax authority portal. The form is available around the clock, takes about four minutes to fill out, and is expected before your flight arrives.10SAT Portal. Regional Traveler Affidavit Paper forms may still be handed out on board or at arrival, but the electronic version moves faster through immigration. Travelers can bring personal luggage plus up to $500 in gifts duty-free, along with up to 5 liters of alcohol and 500 grams of tobacco if they are 18 or older, with anything over these limits subject to customs duties.
