The green tax for a bike is an environmental fee you pay when renewing the registration of a personal two-wheeler that has crossed 15 years from its original registration date, or a commercial two-wheeler that has crossed 8 years. Vehicle taxation is a state subject, so the exact amount depends on where your bike is registered, but for most motorcycles the fee sits in the ₹2,000 to ₹5,000 range depending on age.1Press Information Bureau. When Your Bike Becomes Liable
For a privately owned motorcycle or scooter, the clock starts at the date of original registration and the tax is triggered at the 15-year mark. You pay it when you apply to renew your registration certificate at the Regional Transport Office.1Press Information Bureau. Green Tax to Be Imposed on Older Vehicles Soon
Commercial two-wheelers hit the requirement much earlier. Delivery bikes, courier motorcycles, and other commercially registered two-wheelers become liable after 8 years, and the tax is collected each time the fitness certificate is renewed rather than at RC renewal.1Press Information Bureau. How Much You’ll Pay
Most states apply a flat fee to two-wheelers rather than a percentage of the old road tax. Telangana’s published schedule, for instance, charges motorcycles ₹2,000 for bikes aged 15 to 20 years and ₹5,000 for bikes older than 20 years, with each payment valid for five years.2Telangana Transport Department. Green Tax Other states use similar flat structures but the exact amounts vary. The five-year validity aligns with the renewal cycle, so you won’t pay again until the next renewal.
Riders in cities with poor air quality can expect to pay more. Under the central framework, personal vehicles registered in highly polluted cities can be charged green tax at up to 50% of the road tax originally paid.1Press Information Bureau. Bikes That Don’t Owe Green Tax
The policy carves out exemptions regardless of the vehicle’s age:
- Fully battery-powered electric two-wheelers.
- Bikes running on CNG, LPG, or ethanol.
- Strong hybrids with meaningful electric-assist powertrains.
- Farm equipment such as tractors, harvesters, and tillers.
If you convert an older petrol bike to an approved electric or alternative-fuel setup, you may become eligible for the exemption, provided the conversion meets your state’s approval standards.1Press Information Bureau. Green Tax to Be Imposed on Older Vehicles Soon
What to Have Ready Before You Pay
Whether you pay online or at the counter, keep these on hand:
- Your Registration Certificate (RC), original or smart card. The system pulls the bike’s age, engine number, and registration history from it.
- A current Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate. Without one, both the online portal and the RTO counter will typically reject the application.
- The chassis number stamped on your bike’s frame. The online portal needs it for verification.
- A valid insurance policy. Most RTOs and the online system will not process the payment for an uninsured vehicle.
For online payment, keep scans in PDF or JPEG format ready to upload. Details on your uploads must match the RC exactly; mismatches in engine numbers or spelling will stall the process.
Paying Green Tax Online Through Vahan
The Vahan portal run by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways handles online payments.3Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Pay Vehicle Tax Service The steps:
- Create an account at vahan.parivahan.gov.in if you’re a first-time user.
- Log in, go to Online Services, and choose Pay Vehicle Tax.
- Enter your registration number and chassis number, then request an OTP sent to your registered mobile.
- Verify the OTP and select the appropriate tax mode. The system calculates the amount from your vehicle’s data.
- Confirm the amount and pay via net banking, credit card, or debit card.
The portal issues a digital receipt straight after payment. Save it with your vehicle documents; it’s your proof of compliance until the next renewal cycle. If you’d rather pay in person, take the same documents to your local RTO. Counter processing can take a few business days for records to update, against the near-instant confirmation online.
What Happens if You Skip It
The green tax isn’t optional at renewal time. Your RC renewal will not go through without it, which means your bike is no longer road-legal once the existing registration expires. Riding an unregistered vehicle exposes you to penalties under the Motor Vehicles Act, and your insurance coverage may be void if you’re in an accident with a lapsed registration.
Some states also add late fees or administrative surcharges when you eventually pay, so the longer you delay past the renewal date, the more you end up owing. For a bike genuinely at the end of its usable life, the green tax also acts as a nudge toward India’s vehicle scrappage policy, which offers incentives for turning in an old vehicle when buying a new one.
