Greek citizenship by marriage is available to the foreign spouse of a Greek national through a naturalization track under the Greek Citizenship Code (Law 3284/2004). If you have a child with your Greek spouse, you can apply after three years of lawful, permanent residence in Greece. Without a child, you fall under the general rule of seven years of continuous legal residence. You will also need to pass a Greek language and civics exam, submit a full document file, sit for an interview with a naturalization committee, and take an oath. Greece allows dual citizenship, so you keep your original nationality.
How Long You Must Live in Greece First
The residency clock is the single biggest factor in your timeline. Three years applies if you and your Greek spouse have a biological or legally adopted child together. Seven years applies to everyone else marrying a Greek citizen, under the general naturalization track.1Hellenic Republic Ministry of Interior. How Can I Become a Greek Citizen?
Throughout that period, you must hold a valid residence permit and actually live in Greece. Authorities examine whether Greece is genuinely the center of your life, and long absences can undermine the file. They also verify that the marriage is real and that you and your spouse share a household. If your residence permit lapses, or the marriage ends before the application is decided, eligibility can disappear.
One narrow exception exists for spouses of Greek diplomats posted abroad. If you completed at least one year of residence in Greece, time spent overseas because of your spouse’s diplomatic assignment counts toward the residency requirement.2Hellenic Republic. The Language and Civics Exam (PEGP)
Before you can apply, you need the Certificate of Adequacy of Knowledge for Naturalization, known by its Greek acronym PEGP. It tests Greek at the B1 level (listening, reading, writing) along with Greek history, geography, political institutions, and culture.3Gov.gr. Participate in the Exams of the Knowledge Adequacy Certificate for Naturalisation
You need 70% overall to pass, with roughly 67% on the language section and 50% on the history and culture section. The exam uses multiple-choice questions and written components. Registration goes through the gov.gr portal using Taxisnet credentials, and sittings are held at designated centers on scheduled dates.
Not everyone has to take it. Applicants who completed enough years in Greek primary school, secondary school, or a Greek university can submit their diplomas to the Citizenship Directorate instead. An oral version is offered in Athens and Thessaloniki for applicants over 62 and those with physical disabilities.
Documents You Need
Build the file carefully, because incomplete dossiers are one of the main causes of delay. Core documents include:
- Valid passport and residence permit covering the full qualifying residency period, issued by the Ministry of Migration and Asylum.
- Marriage certificate. If your marriage took place outside Greece, register it with the Special Civil Registry Section in Athens first.4Ministry of Interior. Marriage Registrations
- Birth certificates for you and any children.
- Criminal record certificates from your country of origin and from Greek police. The Greek record is valid for only three months, so time it to your filing date.5Gov.gr. Get a Copy of Criminal Record
- PEGP certificate, or proof of exemption.
- Greek tax identification number (AFM), with your employment and residential history in Greece.
Foreign-issued documents must be legalized. If your country is party to the Hague Apostille Convention, an Apostille stamp is enough. Otherwise, the document has to be certified by the issuing country’s designated authority and then by the Greek consulate there.6Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Every foreign-language document must be translated into Greek. Acceptable translators are those in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Register of Certified Translators, qualified lawyers practicing in Greece, and graduates of the Ionian University’s Translation and Interpreting Department.6Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Filing and Fees
You submit the complete dossier and your PEGP certificate to the Citizenship Directorate. The application fee, called the paravolo, is paid through the electronic tax portal (e-Paravolo). Budget around 550 euros, and confirm the current amount on gov.gr before filing.
After submission, the administration runs a background check through the police and reviews your file for completeness. Missing translations and gaps in the record are the usual reasons applications stall at this early stage.
The Interview and the Oath
The core of the assessment is an interview with a three-member Naturalization Committee drawn from the General Secretariat for Citizenship. The committee decides whether you meet the substantive conditions of Article 5A of the Citizenship Code, looking at three areas:7General Secretariat for Citizenship. Practical Interview Guide
- Economic integration: stable income, property, tax and social insurance compliance.
- Social integration: family ties to Greek citizens, community involvement, children in Greek schools, permanent residence in the country.
- Political awareness: familiarity with Greek political institutions and civic participation, such as voting in local elections.
The evaluation is holistic; you do not need to satisfy every criterion in isolation. The committee issues a reasoned recommendation, and if it is positive, the Minister of Interior signs the naturalization decision, which is then published in the Government Gazette. You must take the oath of citizenship within one year of that publication, before the General Secretary of the Region. Miss the one-year window and the decision is revoked.2Hellenic Republic. How Long the Process Actually Takes
The stated processing time is roughly one year from submission to decision. In practice, most spouse applicants wait two to four years because of backlogs at the Citizenship Directorate, slow background checks, and delays scheduling the committee interview.1Hellenic Republic Ministry of Interior. How Can I Become a Greek Citizen?
Add the residency period itself. On the three-year track, the total journey from marriage to citizenship is realistically five to seven years. On the seven-year track, nine to eleven years overall is a more honest estimate.
If You Are Denied
A rejection can be challenged by filing an annulment application with the locally competent Administrative Court of Appeal. The rejection itself is not published in the Government Gazette; you receive it through the relevant authority.8Hellenic Republic. Naturalisation of Expatriates Residing Abroad
You can also reapply, paying the fee again and addressing whatever the committee flagged. Common grounds for denial include weak evidence of genuine integration, gaps in tax compliance, and doubts about the marriage.
What Happens if You Divorce
If you divorce before citizenship is granted, expect authorities to scrutinize whether the marriage was genuine, and the basis for your application may fall away, especially if your residence permit depended on the spousal relationship. Once the naturalization decision is issued and the oath taken, a later divorce does not strip you of Greek nationality. Citizenship is a personal status that survives the marriage.
Dual Citizenship and EU Rights
Greece permits dual and multiple citizenships, so you do not have to renounce your existing nationality. Greek citizenship is also EU citizenship, which gives you the right to live, work, and travel across all EU member states. You can reside in another EU country for up to three months on your Greek passport or ID card alone, and for longer if you are employed, self-employed, or otherwise meet the conditions of the EU Free Movement Directive. Five continuous years of legal residence in another EU country qualifies you for permanent residence there.9European Commission. Free Movement and Residence
Military Service if You Are Male
Naturalizing as a Greek man triggers the same military service obligation that applies to men born Greek. Males between 19 and 45 must serve, regardless of another passport or a foreign birthplace.10U.S. Embassy & Consulate in Greece. Greek Military Obligations
Standard service is 12 months for enlisted soldiers and 17 months for reserve officers. A reduced nine-month term is available for applicants with multiple siblings or who are the sole child in a family.11Hellenic Republic Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Military Conscription
Some exemptions apply. Living permanently abroad for at least 11 consecutive years, or abroad for work for at least seven consecutive years, can qualify you for a Certificate of Permanent Residence Abroad that suspends the obligation. Active duty service of at least three months in the regular units of an allied country’s armed forces may also count.10U.S. Embassy & Consulate in Greece. Greek Military Obligations
Watch one practical trap. If you enter Greece under a military-exempt status and overstay the permitted time, you can be barred from leaving until service is completed. Male applicants in the relevant age range should confirm their military status before booking travel.
