A line item reading GOOGLE *CHATGPT or GOOGLE *OpenAI on your bank or credit card statement is a Google ChatGPT charge: a paid ChatGPT subscription from OpenAI, billed through the Google Play Store because it was purchased inside the ChatGPT app on an Android device. The most common amount is $20.00 per month for ChatGPT Plus, with higher tiers at $100 and $200. If you or someone using your phone signed up for a paid plan, that’s what you’re seeing.
Why the Charge Says Google Instead of OpenAI
Subscriptions bought inside an Android app run through Google Play’s billing system. Google is the merchant of record for products sold through the Play Store in many countries, so your bank sees Google as the party that charged you rather than the app developer.1Google. Google Play Developer Distribution Agreement That’s why the descriptor reads GOOGLE *CHATGPT followed by a string of characters instead of just OpenAI. It doesn’t mean Google itself billed you for something separate.
What the Amount Tells You
The dollar figure identifies which plan was purchased:

- $200 per month is the highest individual Pro tier.3OpenAI. About ChatGPT Pro Tiers
Your actual charge may be slightly higher than the base price because many states and localities apply sales tax to digital subscriptions. Depending on where you live, that can add up to roughly 6% on top. A $20 Plus subscription in a state taxing digital services at 6% shows up around $21.20.
These are recurring subscriptions. They auto-renew on the same calendar day each month, anchored to when the subscription started, and they keep hitting your statement until you actively cancel.
How to Verify the Transaction
The fastest check is your Google payment history. Sign in at payments.google.com, click Activity, and look for the transaction that matches the date and amount on your bank statement.4Google Pay. Find Your Google Purchase History The Subscriptions and services section of that same page shows whether an active ChatGPT subscription is tied to your Google account.
Every Google Play transaction has a unique order ID that starts with GPA followed by numbers and dots.5Google Play. How Do I Find a Transaction ID The same ID appears in the receipt email Google sends to the Gmail address linked to your Play account. Write that number down before you do anything else, because you’ll need it for support or a refund request.
If the date and amount match, and the amount lines up with one of the tiers above plus any tax, the charge is a legitimate ChatGPT subscription on your Google account.
How to Cancel
This is where people get stuck. A subscription purchased through the Play Store has to be canceled through Google Play, not through OpenAI’s website or the ChatGPT app settings. OpenAI’s own support page sends Android subscribers to the Play Store to cancel.6OpenAI. How Do I Cancel My ChatGPT Subscription Deleting the app doesn’t cancel anything. The charges keep coming.
On your Android device, open the Google Play Store app, tap your profile icon in the top right, then Payments and subscriptions, then Subscriptions. Find ChatGPT in the list, tap it, and select Cancel subscription. Confirm the cancellation. Google emails a confirmation afterward. Keep that email as proof in case a charge appears later.
Access to the paid features continues through the end of the current billing period. No further charges hit after that period ends.
Requesting a Refund
If the charge was unauthorized or accidental, request the refund directly through Google Play. Use the Report a problem option in the Google Play Help Center, or find the transaction at payments.google.com and choose the refund option there.7Google Play. Learn About Google Play Refund Policies You’ll need the GPA order number and a reason, such as unauthorized purchase or accidental transaction.
Refunds are more likely to be approved when requested soon after the charge, so don’t wait weeks. Approved refunds generally return to your original payment method within a few business days. Canceling mid-cycle usually doesn’t trigger a pro-rated refund on its own. You keep access through the end of the period but typically don’t get money back for the unused portion.8Google Account Help. Purchase, Cancellation and Refund Policies
Try Google Before Disputing With Your Bank
Calling your bank to dispute the charge feels like the fast path. It isn’t. Filing a chargeback for a Google Play transaction can get your entire Google account suspended, which cuts off Gmail, Drive, Photos, and every other Google service tied to that account. Google may refuse to reinstate the account until the chargeback is reversed.
Run Google’s own refund process first. If Google denies the request and you genuinely believe the charge is fraudulent, a bank dispute becomes more defensible at that point. Going straight to a chargeback over a $20 subscription can cost far more than $20 in lost access.
Someone Else in the House May Have Subscribed
A common reason a charge looks unfamiliar is that another person used your device or Google account to sign up. A child, spouse, or family member logged into your account on an Android device can start a subscription that bills your payment method.
ChatGPT Plus can’t be shared through Google Play’s Family Library, which only covers purchased apps, games, movies, and books, not in-app subscriptions.9Google Play. Use Google Play Family Library Each person needs their own subscription.
If you manage a child’s account through Family Link, the purchase-approval settings have gaps around subscriptions. Family Link can require approval for paid apps and in-app purchases but may not cover every subscription type.10Google For Families Help. Purchase Approvals on Google Play Setting approvals to All content and removing stored payment methods from the child’s device are the most reliable ways to stop repeat charges.
If a Renewal Payment Fails
A declined card at renewal doesn’t end the subscription immediately. OpenAI retries the charge over several days, and paid access usually continues during that grace period. If the payment keeps failing, the account reverts to the free tier. Conversation history and account data stay intact; the advanced models and paid features drop off. When a payment fails on an initial signup rather than a renewal, the account simply stays on the free tier and any pending authorization hold on the card generally clears within three to five business days.
