An unrecognized GoFundMe charge on your bank statement is almost always a donation someone made through a crowdfunding campaign using that card or account. The amount includes the donation itself plus any optional tip added at checkout, so it can be larger than the donation you remember. If nothing about the charge looks familiar, the usual explanations are a household member who used the card, a recurring donation you set up earlier, or, less often, a compromised card number.
Why the Amount Looks Bigger Than You Remember
The single most common reason is the tip. At checkout, GoFundMe pre-selects a suggested contribution to help fund platform operations, and donors who click through without adjusting it end up paying more than the donation itself. You can set that tip to any amount, including zero, and it has no effect on what reaches the organizer.1GoFundMe. Choosing a Tip Amount
Two other things inflate a charge. Recurring monthly donations bill on the same calendar day each month and carry an extra 5% fee on top of the standard transaction fee.2GoFundMe. Pricing and Fees International donations can also add currency conversion. If you gave $25 a month and forgot, the charge keeps reappearing until you cancel it.
Steps to Identify the Charge
Before treating the charge as fraud, GoFundMe recommends working through a few checks.3GoFundMe. Unrecognized Charge on Bank Statement
- Search your email inbox for the phrase “Thank you for your donation to.” Any donation you made produces a receipt with that subject line, and seeing the campaign name usually resolves it.
- Check whether the payment might have gone through PayPal or Venmo. The descriptor on your statement can look different depending on the payment method.
- Ask anyone in your household, or friends and coworkers, who could have had access to your card or your device.
The email receipt is the most useful piece. It shows the donation amount, any tip, and the campaign, which is enough to explain almost every mystery charge.
When the Charge Really Is Unauthorized
If none of those checks explain the charge, treat it as suspicious. Contact GoFundMe’s support team through the help center so they can look up the donation on their side. Then call the number on the back of your card to report the charge and, if warranted, cancel the card. Stolen card numbers get used at all kinds of merchants online, and a crowdfunding platform is no exception.3GoFundMe. Unrecognized Charge on Bank Statement
Getting a Refund for a Donation You Made
If the charge is yours but you want the money back (say, the tip was much larger than you intended, or you meant to donate less), request a refund through the “Contact us” option on GoFundMe’s help center.4GoFundMe. Request a Refund Refunds usually take 7 to 10 business days to appear back in your account; weekends and holidays don’t count toward that window.5GoFundMe. Refunding Your Donors
Try the platform’s refund channel before asking your bank for a chargeback. A chargeback pulls the funds out of the organizer’s GoFundMe account and holds them during a review, which is slower and creates problems for the fundraiser.6GoFundMe. Handling Chargebacks If the platform doesn’t resolve it, a chargeback is still available.
If you set up a recurring monthly donation and just want it to stop, cancel the recurring gift itself so no further charges post. Past charges are handled separately through the refund process above.
If You Think the Fundraiser Was Fraudulent
A different remedy applies when the charge is yours but the campaign turned out to be a scam or misused the money. GoFundMe’s Giving Guarantee offers a full refund when funds are misused, and you have a full year after donating to report the problem.7GoFundMe.
