Gallagher Affinity Charge: What It Is, Canceling, and Disputes

A Gallagher Affinity charge on your bank or credit card statement is a payment to Gallagher Affinity Insurance Services, Inc., which administers insurance policies and benefit memberships sold through professional associations, unions, alumni groups, and similar organizations. It usually traces back to a product you enrolled in through a group you belong to, and it can appear as a one-time debit or a recurring one depending on the payment plan you chose at signup.1Gallagher Affinity. What the Charge Is Usually For

Gallagher Affinity doesn’t sell to the public the way a typical carrier does. It builds co-branded insurance and benefit packages that associations then offer to their members, so the descriptor on your statement often doesn’t match the name of the group that sold you the product.2Gallagher Affinity. Association Benefits Programs

Charges most commonly come from one of these programs:

Because monthly payment plans and automatic renewals are standard, charges can keep hitting long after you’ve stopped thinking about the original enrollment.8Gallagher Affinity. Insurance Programs

Figuring Out Which Program Is Billing You

Before you can cancel, you need to know which specific product the charge is for. Search your email for “Gallagher” to find your original enrollment or renewal confirmation, which will list the policy number and the association that offered it. If nothing turns up, think about which memberships you hold and check that group’s website for a Gallagher-administered benefits page. The customer service number listed there is the fastest route to the right program.

Disputing a Charge You Didn’t Authorize

If you don’t recognize the charge at all, you have rights that go beyond calling Gallagher.

On a credit card, the Fair Credit Billing Act lets you dispute the charge in writing to your card issuer within 60 days of the statement date. Send the letter to the issuer’s billing-inquiry address with your account number, a description of the charge, and any supporting documents. The issuer must acknowledge your dispute within 30 days and resolve it within 90. While the investigation runs, the issuer can’t report you as delinquent or try to collect the disputed amount.10Federal Trade Commission. Using Credit Cards and Disputing Charges

For charges debited straight from a checking account, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau recommends revoking the company’s authorization in writing and telling your bank or credit union you’ve done so. Any charge that lands after you revoke authorization is treated as an error, and you can request a refund from the bank. A stop-payment order can also block future debits, though banks typically charge a fee.11Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. How Do I Stop Automatic Payments From My Bank Account

Keep records of every cancellation and dispute request, including dates and the names of people you speak with. If charges keep coming after you’ve cancelled, the FTC recommends reporting the situation at ReportFraud.ftc.gov or contacting your state attorney general.12Federal Trade Commission. Billing Errors Are a Known Complaint

Reviews on Gallagher Affinity’s Better Business Bureau profile describe recurring administrative problems: one reviewer reported being billed repeatedly for premiums already paid, and another described a year-long dispute over automatic payments that weren’t processed correctly and a check that was cashed but not credited. A third reviewer, a union member with life insurance through Gallagher Affinity, reported months of delays getting a response on an insurability question.13Better Business Bureau.
